Developers pitch Rosemary project

For more than four decades, The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch resident Natalie Pearson has had a piece of history in her home — American poet Walt Whitman’s Bible. Pearson and her late husband, Walter Whitman Swertfager, inherited the Bible from Swertfager’s mother, who was a descendent of Whitman. Whitman gave the Bible to his sister, Mary Elizabeth, as a gift in 1878. On Friday, Pearson donated the Bible to the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site in New York. Historian Margaret Guardi and Cynthia Shor, executive director of the museum, flew down to meet Pearson and retrieve the Bible that had been kept safe for generations. “I’m totally at peace with where it went,” says Pearson.

For nearly two years, developer Mark Kauffman has been interested in pursuing an ambitious undertaking in the heart of the Rosemary District. He wants to incorporate private- and city-owned property for a mixed-use project, but he’s had to wait as the city has pursued its own path for the land he coveted. In December 2012, the city held a public meeting to gather resident input on two Rosemary District properties, which leaders hoped might house a catalyst project for the underdeveloped area. Since then, the city and Rosemary residents have also waited, with the area progressing more slowly than many originally hoped, City Manager Tom Barwin admits. On Monday, Kauffman and the rest of his development team presented its vision to the Sarasota City Commission, hopeful that the proposal could bring an end to both groups’ waiting games. The project, called Rosemary Square, would feature a variety of uses along Boulevard of the Arts, Fifth Street and Central Avenue. Plans call for 40 residential units, 34,000 square feet of commercial, office and fine-arts space, 10,000

The county has expressed an interest in upgrading a BMX facility, but it’s unclear if it will be the draw proponents think.

W

hen the Sarasota County Commission moved toward upgrading the BMX facility located on 17th Street, commissioners believed the track could be the only one of its caliber on the East Coast. Since then, other communities — including one just more than an hour away — have made moves toward constructing their own stateof-the-art BMX tracks, an attempt to cash in on the sport’s burgeoning popularity and recent status as an Olympic sport. Commissioners have indicated a commitment to the track upgrades, but with other areas have the same idea as Sarasota County, some have wondered the effect competition might have on the plans for new facilities. Plans to improve the BMX track have been under consideration since 2011, but became a more imminent possibility last summer. BMX became an Olympic sport in

2008, and Sarasota County leaders have indicated they believe the Sarasota track could become a sought-after training facility in the lead up to the 2016 games. Planned upgrades include new lighting, electronic starting gates, a redesigned track and two new ramps — including an Olympic-caliber 8-meter supercross ramp, only one
