IDA budget increases by 5.4%

IDA officials plan to use $100,000 in reserves to fund improvements to Lakewood Ranch Town Hall and reduce district contributions to the IDA budget.

+ Donation tosses up fun Students at Nolan Middle School now can toss their way to victory thanks to a donation by Lowe’s. With the support of Lowe’s manager Ray Bros, Nolan’s Technology Student Association students constructed eight cornhole sets. TSA students used the SolidWorks program to design the sets. A team of students then constructed and painted them. Student Morgan Kirchman and her grandmother handmade 64 bean bags for the sets, as well. “(We) are excited to have this new resource for (our) students in an effort to promote physical fitness for everyone,” physical education teacher Brad Claussen says.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority has been setting aside money in reserves — or savings — for years, in anticipation of repairs and improvements to its facilities and systems. In approving its preliminary

$3.3 million 2015 fiscal year budget Thursday, May 15, the IDA finally authorized Lakewood Ranch Town Hall finance staff to dip into those reserves, a spending strategy that is likely to continue over the next few years.

The 2015 fiscal year budget, which the board still must vote to adopt at a July 17 public hearing, appropriates 5.4% more in total expenses than last year’s, requiring the spending of $100,000 in reserves. Total revenues in the budget

CLOSER LOOK + Montooth author visits classroom Greenfield Plantation resident Cameron Schindler, with his first-grade class at Rowlett Elementary School, had a special surprise visitor to his classroom — his grandfather, Robert Jay. Jay, the award-winning author of The Montooth book series, was the surprise guest reader for Mellissa Martinez’s class. He read part of the book to the children and had them slither on the floor like snakes to act out the story.

Developer reveals new community’s features Although cosmetic details of Del Webb at Lakewood Ranch remain a secret, its developer promises senior-friendly features in homes. EAST COUNTY — Del Webb at Lakewood Ranch may be East County’s worst kept secret. While representatives of Pulte Homes — a subsidiary of the Pulte Group, which develops homes under the name Del Webb — forge ahead in their plans to construct the first age-

restricted community in Lakewood Ranch, the group has kept cosmetic specifics a secret. “A lot can change between now and when we start building,” said Valerie Dolenga, spokeswoman for the Pulte Group. “We aren’t ready to show what it will look like just yet.”

Dolenga and other proponents of bringing the 55-andolder community to Lakewood Ranch did, however, paint a faint picture of what to expect from the project targeted at baby boomers.
