Residents react to overlay project Residents hope their concerns about the expansion of the Woman’s Exchange — the first project to go through the Laurel Park Overlay District review process — are taken into consideration.
+ Looking for love Wanted: shelled companion to enjoy all Siesta has to offer. Siesta Key residents along the Grand Canal have a new neighbor, Mr. T the gopher tortoise. Mr. T first appeared a month ago by the canal and has since made his way into the hearts of his neighbors. “He’s very congenial,” says resident Betsy Ball. Ball and her neighbors believe Mr. T is lonely and looking for someone with whom to share his adventures. Ball hopes Siesta Key visitors and residents will drive carefully through Siesta Key, because many tortoises find themselves on the sides of roads. “I hope he finds true love,” says Ball, “and lives happily ever after.”

Siesta residents question parking restriction’s effects Nearly four months after the county installed no-parking zones on Avenida de Mayo, residents still see cars parked in restricted areas. Siesta Key residents who thought they scored a victory when the county passed a noparking resolution for sections of Avenida de Mayo have discovered a disappointing truth: People are still parking there. In January, the County Com-
mission approved parking restrictions on parts of Avenida de Mayo, which had become a heavily used overflow parking option for Siesta beachgoers and shoppers. The resolution banned parking on both sides of the street between Canal Road and Avenida
de Cortez, and installed staggered 500-foot no-parking zones between Avenida de Cortez and Avenida del Norte. The residents cited safety concerns and residential issues in
