OBITUARIES James Raymond Boyer
James Raymond Boyer, 75, of Sarasota, died April 23. Born in Maryville, Tenn., Mr. Boyer moved in 1940 to Sarasota. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a devoted Southern Baptist. Mr. Boyer is survived by his sons, Jimmy Boyer, of Jacksonville, Theron Boyer, of Bradenton, Patrick Boyer, of Bradenton, and Anthony Vassilaro-Boyer, of Longboat Key; and a brother, Edwin, of Bradenton. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Tidewell Hospice Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
Maurice V. Orlando
Orlando
Maurice V. Orlando, 91, of Longboat Key, died April 28. Born March 12, 1923, in Stonington, Conn., Mr. Orlando graduated from Stonington High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He served in the
U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. In 1966, Mr. Orlando founded and launched his own business, Ortronics, in Norwich, Conn. He utilized his engineering background to design, build and patent his own assembly line machinery that manufactured electrical coils and wire harnesses. Through the 1970s, Ortronics developed new products in the assemblage of cables, cards and blocks for Regional Bell Operating Services. In the 1990s, the company expanded its product line into multimedia packages and became a globally recognized company with international operations on several continents. After many successful and innovative years, the company was sold to Legrand, a French-based electronics conglomerate, in 1998. Mr. Orlando was an avid golfer and played in several pro-am events, including his unforgettable round with Arnold Palmer in Augusta, Ga. He also enjoyed boating and fishing adventures with his friends in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Findeisen; and his son, Stephen. Mr. Orlando is survived by his sister, Albina Logan; a stepdaughter, Margaret Pescatello; a stepson, Roland Otto; and five grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held later this year. Leon Eyges Rogers
Leon Eyges Rogers, 96, died April 28. Born Jan. 9, 1918, in Brookline, Mass., Mr. Rogers graduated from Huntington School of Boston and earned a degree in English literature at Brown University in 1940. He spent many summers, as a camper and counselor, at Camp Brunonia in Maine. Mr. Rogers was a talented athlete, and while at Brookline High School, he held the Massachusetts state record for the 300-yard dash. At Huntington School, he received the Washburn Cup for best athlete in the school. He was a varsity player for baseball and football, and was captain of the track team. During his time at Brown, Mr. Rogers
was a member of the Owl and Ring Society; one of the originators of WBRU, the Brown University radio station; and was the sports editor of the Brown Daily Herald for three years. He was also a member of the Ivy League Club and Brown University Club. Mr. Rogers served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a lieutenant senior grade for four years during World War II. Mr. Rogers was vice president of sales and marketing for two publicly traded corporations and general manager of a privately owned company. During the course of his career, he lived in New York, Chicago and Connecticut. He was a founder and president of the Trojan Club, a Brookline Boys Club, which was founded in 1931. When he retired in 1981 to Longboat Key, he became a member of the Longboat Key Club and a strong supporter of fine arts and culture in Sarasota. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Annette; two daughters, Patricia and Victoria Lee; two stepdaughters, Ronnie and Carol; a sister, Gloria Gopenl; and two granddaughters. Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery.
