+ Lakewood crowns students Lakewood Ranch High School juniors Connor Jones and Kristen Mendez became school royalty March 31, after being named Mr. Mustang and Miss Lakewood Ranch. Both students received free prom tickets, free parking in front of the school, free entry to sporting events and other perks. Additionally, Beth Ciemniecki earned the title of junior princess, while Jalbelly Guzman was crowned senior princess. Nick Bartoszak was named junior prince, and Austin Carter was named senior prince.

Lakewood Ranch. The focus groups, held at Palm-Aire Golf & Country Club with local real estate agents and potential buyers who were handselected and compensated for their time, will help determine
the look and feel of Harmony at Lakewood Ranch — Mattamy Homes’ planned 675-home community. For Mattamy Homes, which closed on 235 acres just south of the Central Park community for $17.2 million in January, the focus groups have provided a look into the unique demands of a new market. “We have spent 35 years in this business, so clearly we

Coast Guard endorses Fort Hamer Bridge A final environmental impact statement says the Fort Hamer alternative is better than two other options for the area. EAST COUNTY — A long-debated northsouth connector across the Manatee River is closer than ever to being constructed. A final environmental impact statement published online last week recommends Manatee County move forward with the design and construction of the Fort Hamer Bridge. The URS Corp.’s report, which was overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard and published on its website, says the proposed two-lane Fort Hamer Bridge is the most viable north-south bridge alternative compared to two other options explored: expanding the Rye Road Bridge or doing nothing. The bridge would connect Fort Hamer
+ MTI takes top awards The Manatee Technical Institute Postsecondary Chapter of HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, dominated the Postsecondary-Collegiate Division at the HOSA State Leadership Conference April 3 through April 6, in Lake Buena Vista. MTI students won 17 firstplace, five second-place and eight third-place finishes. MTI dental assisting program students earned honors, as well. Alexandra Harper-Creadon was awarded the Florida HOSA Foundation Scholarship for postsecondary students, and Xamadi Johnson earned the Barbara James Service Award for community service. Medalists will advance to the HOSA National Leadership Conference in June, in Lake Buena Vista.
