Officials conspired to jam traffic The season’s traffic woes began when a town official sent an email reading: ‘Time for some traffic problems on Longboat Key.’
+ Final ULI report is a gem for town The town got what it paid for with the $125,000 Urban Land Institute report. The final, final copy was delivered April 1 to Longboat Key Town Hall. Its cover is made from platinum with diamond accents. Commissioners will now place their right hands on the report when they take their oaths of office. The report will be held in a secure glass case in the commission break room, which will now be used as meditation space. The town will hire a sculptor to create a monument to the holy book and the eight ULI panelists whose words are memorialized in the book.
+ Swanson puts swan family in the spotlight Members of the Longboat Key swan family are finalists in a nationwide contest sponsored by Swanson to appear on the company’s frozen dinner boxes. The “Swan Song” contest will feature “American Idol”-style voting in which the public will choose its favorite swans. The spokesman said the winner could join the ranks of famed avian mascots such as the Aflac Duck and Chick-Fil-A chickens.

On a sunny day, you can hear the faint sounds of honking on Longboat Key from as far away as Osprey or Palmetto. It’s the sound of frustrated drivers stuck in traffic who attempt to solve the jam by blaring their horns. For months, residents have complained about heavier-thanusual seasonal traffic on the Key. A public records request from the Longboat Observer reveals that local officials conspired to create traffic jams on the Key in an attempt to keep complaining residents off the island. It began
with an email from a town employee that read: “Time for some traffic problems on Longboat Key.” For months, town officials have denied a conspiracy, offering unlikely explanations. It’s the price of living in paradise, they said. There are more tourists on the roads this year due to an improved economy and snowstorms up north, they said. It’s the result of college students seeking drunken debauchery on Longboat Key, they said.

Traffic jams and bridge openings on and near Longboat Key the past few weeks were not just seasonal traffic issues. In reality, officials hatched a plan to cause traffic jams Feb. 4, as the 7 p.m. Feb. 3 Longboat Key Town Commission regular meeting headed into its 15th hour. During the meeting, the com-
mission and town officials listened as residents took to the podium one by one and complained in three-minute intervals

Justin Bieber’s new baby: Ohana estate There’s gonna be one less empty house on Longboat Key, following a universally acclaimed musician’s purchase of the blinged out $22 million Ohana estate. Look out, Longboat. Here comes trouble — of the teenybopper, pop star variety. Everyone’s favorite Canadian heartthrob-turned-bad boy, Justin Bieber, will soon call Longboat Key home — more specifically, the Ohana estate on the north end. The “Baby” singer purchased the Gulf-front compound during a quick trip to the Key in late February, deciding $22 million was chump change for a great place to party. The estate includes three pavilions with almost 10,000 square feet of living space, giving the Biebs plenty of room to record or buy more monkeys to replace the one wrongfully seized by German customs officials in 2013. Bieber’s bodyguards will take over the guesthouse while Bieber and on-again off-again girlfriend, Selena Gomez, make the main pavilion home. With six bedrooms, seven full baths and two half-baths, Longboat Key can expect to see a lot of colorful guests filtering in and out of the estate’s massive front gates. When speaking with the Longboat Observer, Bieber’s agent mentioned that the star would love to add a helipad on the roof

Justin Bieber prefers to keep a low profile wherever he goes, but police believe that his leopard-print Audi R8 and washboard abs will make him easy to spot on Longboat Key. of one of the pavilions because the Biebs really hated the in-season traffic during his short visit. “He just doesn’t have any time to waste,” said his agent. “Between his albums, fragrances and trying to get into the rap game, he’s really got his hands full.”
But the star isn’t always working hard to make those young (and old) hearts swoon. The singing sensation made headlines earlier this year when he was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license after
police saw him drag racing Jan. 23, in Miami. Bieber was househunting for a Florida oasis on that trip, but after the arrest, decided the West Coast was more his speed.
