Lakewood Ranch Little League says its colorful, sturdy advertising signs at Lakewood Ranch Park give it precious revenue, but they violate code.
+ Good vibrations The Tabernacle Christian School middle school student Lauren Medred, an East County resident, earned top vocal honors, taking first place in vocal solo female category of the Florida League of Christian School’s Festival of the Academics and Arts Feb. 28 and March 1 at Southeastern University in Lakeland. Tabernacle students took home 59 top-three finishes.
Braden River High School’s TSA team took first place for the third consecutive year.
+ Tech takeover Manatee County schools dominated a state technology competition with five of six top-three finishes earned by Manatee County schools during the 35th annual Technology Student Association State Competition late February. Of those wins, four were by East County schools. Braden River, Southeast and Lakewood Ranch high schools took first, second and third, respectively. Braden River earned 25 topthree finishes. The Legacy Boulevard gatehouse is the main entry and exit point into Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
Structural problems lead to gate repairs Lakewood Ranch Town Hall will close inbound lanes of the Legacy Boulevard gatehouse, leading into the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, for a week. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Residents and guests of the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club soon will face traffic delays as Lakewood Rach Town Hall makes repairs to community’s main gatehouse. Lakewood Ranch Town Hall staff believes structural deficiencies of the Legacy Boulevard gatehouse have led to significant
water damage and rotting that could affect the building’s stability. Officials consider the changes significant and say they almost have to completely rebuild the structure. Repairs likely will begin in midto late March, lasting for three to four weeks, and will impact traffic. No construction dates have yet been set.
Lakewood Ranch Town Hall staff Paul Chetlain and Ryan Heise say additional shoring installed a month ago helps keep the gatehouse stable.
“The gatehouse is structurally not safe,” said Paul Chetlain, maintenance manager for Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. “Certain areas are 50% or more rotted away. Any structural issue with a public building needs to be immediately addressed.” Lakewood Ranch Community

Manatee stays firm on sign ordinance Manatee County says Lakewood Ranch Little League must conform advertising signs to code. LAKEWOOD RANCH — When Troy Branham became president of Lakewood Ranch Little League this season, he took the same stance as his predecessor on an issue that has proven bigger than baseball: advertising signs. Branham, just like David Dees, sees the bright, sturdy — and noncompliant — signs that hang from the fences along the walkway at Lakewood Ranch Park as the only way to pay the bills. “We need business advertising to sustain ourselves,” Branham said. “If not, we can retract the league because we can’t survive.” But Manatee County’s Youth/Adult League Manual says advertising signs must be made of vinyl, and in a private meeting Feb. 20, almost two years after a dispute over the signs began, county officials told Branham that Lakewood Ranch Little League’s advertising signs must comply with policy. Ed Hunzeker, Manatee County administrator, and Charlie Hunsicker, director of the county’s Parks and Natural Resources Department, instructed Branham to meet
