EAST COUNTY — As a school district leader who didn’t build his career in the classroom, Rick Mills, a superintendent with a military background and a master’s degree in national security affairs, likes to bring outside perspective to education. In November, Mills led a professional development workshop for all of the Manatee County
School District’s principals and senior administrative staff. There, he showed a clip of the film “Moneyball,” which tells the true story of a baseball team, the Oakland Athletics, that experiences a long run of success with a unique, data-based approach required because it has little revenue. “I did it to show how, as leaders,
we make decisions that produce outcomes,” said Mills, whose completes one year as Manatee County Schools’ superintendent March 20. “It’s about how metrics and projections produce wins.” One year into his tenure as the leader of Manatee County

Residents in University Park’s Henley neighborhood are making strides to make their community FloridaFriendly certified. Manatee County’s Director of Florida Friendly Landscape Services Michelle Atkinson recently inspected several homes in the neighborhood, bringing the total number of certified homes to 18 of 32. Residents hope to have the remaining homes certified within six months. “Because our neighborhood is along the Braden River, with considerable preserve, pine and oak hammock, we feel a responsibility to follow the nine principles outlined in the (Florida Friendly landscaping) program,” says Polly Curran who is leading the team’s project along with Emily Vosnos, neighborhood chairwoman, and resident Maureen Hager. Henley’s common-area landscaping was certified as Florida-friendly two years ago.
+ Harvest packs food to fight hunger Members of Harvest United Church worked to stop hunger Feb. 23 during an interactive meal-packing party at the church. The organization packed about 40,000 meals to support Stop Hunger Now’s worldwide work, which includes ongoing hunger relief operations in the Philippines. On Sunday, Harvest also donated $17,227 — half of its 2013 Christmas Eve offering — to Stop Hunger Now. The packing party was part of the Florida Conference of United Methodist Church’s “A Million Reasons” campaign, a yearlong mission to pack 1 million meals to fight hunger.
