Neighbors pitch to Hilton guests Longboat Key will have 102 fewer tourist units for 16 to 18 months when the Hilton shuts down, but other properties are ready to roll out the welcome mat during the resort’s remodel.

+ Resident buys winning ticket Longboat Key resident Robert Rich is now $53,165.93 richer. He purchased a winning Fantasy 5 ticket at the island’s Publix, according to the Florida Lottery. Rich was one of four winners of the Jan. 27 lottery, each of whom will receive a $53,165.93 prize. The other three winning tickets were purchased in Coral Springs, Tampa and Miami.

Google the words “Longboat Key,” “Hilton” and “alternatives.” The first search result will take you to the website hiltonlongboatkeyalternative.com — which redirects you to the website of Sand Cay Beach Resort, the Hilton’s next-door neighbor to the south. The Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort isn’t accepting reservations after April 30,

in preparation for a $24 million redevelopment and expansion project. That means the Key will have 102 fewer rooms during construction, which Delray Beach-based Ocean Properties anticipates will last 16 to 18 months. Of course, Ocean Properties has other options in the area. It’s the owner of the Resort at Longboat Key Club, Lido Beach

Resort and Lido Beach Holiday Inn. Karen Rangel, regional director of sales for Ocean Properties, said she couldn’t comment on the company’s plans to bring Hilton guests to the company’s other resorts. But other properties, such as the 60-unit Sand Cay, are happy to spread the message that they

TRIPLE THREAT

The Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl XLVII victory ended a winning streak for Mote Marine Aquarium manatee Buffett. Buffett placed his bet on the Denver Broncos Jan. 24, when he swam to a target with the Broncos’ logo. He had picked the Super Bowl winner correctly for six consecutive years. Perhaps Buffett’s halfbrother, Hugh, is now the manatee to watch before placing bets next year: Hugh swam to the Seahawks’ target. Kelsey Grau

Brothers Travis, Garrett and Boo Bouley perform jumps along with Lance Robbins Sunday at the Sarasota Ski-A-Rees season-opener at City Island stadium. The show team executed everything from jumps to three-tiered pyramids in front of a crowd. For more photos from the show, see page 6B.

Accounting issues plague budget The town seeks to eliminate outdated accounting practices and improve its revenue projections as it grapples with a projected $1.4 million budget deficit from last year. Finance Director Sue Smith took over as chief accountant for a few months in 2013 while the town sought to fill the open position. The extra work enabled the former auditor to uncover and correct some strange accounting practices that have affected the town’s balance sheet for years.

For instance, the town hasn’t addressed office supplies inventory since the 1990s and was just expensing the supplies to the department budgets when they needed supplies. Tennis Center supplies, Smith said, also weren’t being accounted for correctly. Smith also said the town will

discontinue a policy of carrying purchase orders over prior years, which affected the operating budget and increased department budgets. And, a $42,980.75 fund consisting of fees for replacement trees that can’t be saved when new projects are built wasn’t be-

ing accounted for correctly and wasn’t singled out as a special revenue fund. The town has filled the accountant position, but Smith told the Longboat Key Town Commission at its meeting Mon-
