Janice Smyth with her quilt, “Mystery Decimals.”
+ Quilting queen moves to semifinals Sarasota resident Janice Smyth is a semifinalist for the 2014 AQS QuiltWeek International Quilt Show in March. Smyth has been chosen to display her quilt, “Mystery Decimals,” at the quilt show held in Lancaster, Penn. “I tried to take something complicated, like decimals, and use it in a simplistic form.” Regardless of how “Mystery Decimals” does in judging, it will be on display at the show, which is expected to draw more than 15,000 people.

+ Leaders of the Pack Sarasota Cub Scout Pack 50 raced their pinewood derby cars Jan. 11 at Gulf Gate Elementary. Nearly 50 boys raced their homemade pinewood cars down a 30-foot-long track. Jude Kolesar (Webelos) came in first place with Kique Perales (Bear) in second and Nevaeh Livingston (Webelos) in third. The winners will move on to the Two Rivers’ district event held in April. More than 1.5 million boys participate in Pinewood Derby Races each year, which first started in 1953.

All she needs is $12,500. Morgan is trying to raise funds to bring consultants from Artspace, a Minneapolisbased company that develops

An artist herself, Morgan believes the city is in desperate
need of that type of housing. As the city has increasingly embraced its cultural reputation, she said, there has not been a corresponding effort to make it easier for artists to live in the city. “Sarasota is becoming more and more popular, and the price of housing has escalated,” Mor-

New push for elected mayor emerges A political committee is proposing a new city charter with five council districts and a ‘strong mayor.’ The group is crafting its messaging to stand apart from earlier efforts. A group of advocates has begun a campaign to put a new Sarasota city charter up for consideration during November’s election, which, if approved, would establish an elected mayor as the executive of the municipal
government. It’s Time Sarasota is a political committee chaired by Linda Holland, the president of the Gillespie Park Neighborhood Association. The group is advocating for a new city charter that would
create an elected-mayor position, sometimes referred to as a “strong mayor,” to oversee the city. Another significant change would establish a city council with five districts, rather than the three districts that currently send
representatives to the City Commission. The group has posted the full text of its proposed charter online at itstimesarasota.com. Now,
