BRU nears irrigation line completion Braden River Utilities has completed work west of Interstate 75 in its quest to bring reclaimed water to Lakewood Ranch.

+ Longo set free Manatee County’s resident manatee, Snooty, bid farewell to the last of his two roommates Jan.16. The South Florida Museum released Longo, one of two manatees who had been undergoing rehabilitation in the museum’s Bishop Manatee Aquarium with Snooty, at the Manatee Viewing Center at TECO’s warm water site in Apollo Beach. Longo was rescued in January 2012, on Longboat Key. At the time of Longo’s release, he weighed 715 pounds, compared with his weight of 271 pounds at the time of his rescue. The museum released Snooty’s other roommate, Cheeno, Jan. 7, in the Orange River in Fort Myers.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch irrigation provider Braden River Utilities is nearing completion on a project to bring reclaimed water to Lakewood Ranch from the city of Bradenton. Contractors now have focused on work east of Interstate 75. As part of the project, Palmbrush

Trail, at its intersection with State Road 70, will be closed through Feb. 10. “Full access to the businesses will be maintained off Palm Brush Trail from Lakewood Ranch Boulevard,” said Scott Pryor, project coordinator for contractor E.T. MacKenzie of Florida. “Traffic will

just not be able to exit or enter directly from State Road 70. The reason is to accommodate equipment and materials required to bore under State Road 70 for part of the BRU reclaimed water interconnect.”

+ Horses need home Horses rescued from a foreclosed property need a new home. Napier’s Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary is seeking new homes for several companion horses — horses too small to be considered fullsize horses and too large to be called ponies. They have their shots, including rabies, and are available for adoption by calling 750-8185.

+ Funding families The Lakewood Ranch-based Payton Wright Foundation assisted 600 families of children affected by brain cancer last year, with bills such as mortgages and transportation needs. In total, the organization donated more than $102,000. For more information, visit paytonwright.org.

Attendees of the Manatee County Fair, which runs through Jan. 26, enjoy a variety of midway rides.

Ranch leaders discuss enhanced police patrols Recent home burglaries have caused neighborhoods to consider extra security from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Although there’s been only one reported home burglary within the borders of the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club this month, some of its residents have not lost sight of what they consider a security problem. A survey of the roughly 20

neighborhoods within Lakewood Ranch Community Development Districts 2, 5 and 6, will determine how strong the concern is, and if residents deem it worthy to pay for patrolling the communities 24/7. A memo from Dick Moran, who represents CDD 2 on the

Country Club/Edgewater Village Association’s Safety Committee, and signed by Steven Peters, the president of CEVA, asks chairmen of the neighborhoods in CDDs 2, 5, 6 and the Edgewater neighborhood to determine if their constituents would favor increased security patrols from the Mana-

tee County Sheriff’s Office. “I know I would feel better if there was someone in a uniform and a car driving through here more than they do now,” Moran said. “It’s important knowing someone is five minutes away.” The memo, sent to the neighborhood chairmen, specifically inquires about 24/7 or 12-hour patrols, although the CDDs could
