Groin-plan delay worries residents North-end condo owners fear an agreement to hold off on building a groin on Beer Can Island leaves them and their properties at risk.

+ Pair focuses eagle eyes on babies Longboat Key photographer Mary Lou Johnson snapped photos of the nest that holds the Key’s youngest bald eagles earlier this month. Johnson believes there are two eaglets in the nest. This photo shows the adult pair keeping their eagle eyes on their babies. Johnson has photographed the Key’s bald eagles over the past six years for fellow Key resident John Ginaven, of the Sarasota Audubon Society, who gives frequent talks about the family.

Town Manager Dave Bullock has no idea how long it will take to obtain state and federal permits to build sand-saving groins on the north end. But, whenever that happens, it will probably be at least six months before the town secures a contractor for the beach project. Whenever that is, it’s not soon

enough for residents of the 88unit Longbeach Condominium, who told commissioners at their Tuesday regular workshop that the beach surrounding the property is rapidly eroding. The residents filled commission chambers for the workshop, which included a beach project update from consultant Olsen Associates Inc.

Adding to their concerns was a settlement the commission reached last week with former Manatee County Commissioner Joe McClash and the ManateeSarasota Sierra Club in their challenge of the project. The town agreed to hold off on applying for permits for a terminal adjustable groin on Beer Can

Island for at least five years. In return, McClash and the Sierra Club agreed to drop their challenge to two north-end permeable adjustable groins so that the town can finish its permitting process. Longbeach condo resident Bob Appel told the commission the community is discussing extending its seawall to protect its property. “I’d like you to protect our

+ Couple stirs the pot at Food Festival Longboat Key residents Alan and Judy Fishbein were key ingredients to the success of Temple Sinai’s Jan. 12 Jewish Food Fest. That’s because the couple served as food captains for the event that drew nearly 2,000 people, who sampled Jewish foods such as blintzes, corned beef sandwiches, knishes and Hammentasen. Here, the Fishbeins are pictured guarding their popular cabbage soup.

P&Z approves $60 million project Sixteen luxury beachfront condominiums priced as high as $4.25 million move one step closer to breaking ground at the former Villa Am Meer site. The Longboat Key Planning & Zoning Board unanimously recommended a 16-unit luxury condominium project for Longboat Key Tuesday. The project will transform an overgrown beachfront property and help usher in an influx of new inven-

tory coming to the island this year. With approval of the Aria project at 2251 Gulf of Mexico Drive just waiting the Town Commission’s approval, Sarasota developer Jay Tallman, president of Ascentia Group LLC, plans to

open reservations for the project this week. The project has a total retail value of $60 million. “It’s a wonderful project that I’m extremely excited about,” Tallman told P&Z board members Tuesday. “We have a lot of interest in the units already.”
