+ Reading rainbow Students at Haile Middle School raised more than $6,000 to further the cause of reading late last month, after the school’s language arts department hosted a fundraiser for the Ethiopia Reads! organization. Starbucks provided tea and coffee for students, while Smoothie King provided smoothies and Woodland Community Church popped popcorn. Haile students hoped to raise $1,200 to provide books to children in Ethiopia.

+ Gift giver For Lakewood Ranch resident Doreen Degirolamo, the best Christmas gift was one she already had at home. Just before Christmas, Doreen lost her balance and fell, breaking her favorite bird statue. Much to her surprise, her husband, Pat, found a way to fix it. “In this holiday season of spending on gifts with money we don’t have just to give someone something, this gift will last forever in my home and in my heart,” Degirolamo says.

+ Tail tappin’ If Lakewood Ranch resident Helen Hagerty had a tail, it would be wagging. Her book, “Please Let Me Stay,” a true story told through the voice of a dog named Toby, has been named a finalist for the Maxwell Medallion, an honor the Dog Writers Association of America gives annually. Hagerty co-authored the book with Sue Nelowet, of Virginia.
