+ Nock, Nock. Who’s there? The St. Armands Fire Station got two Nocks at the door Friday, Dec. 6: Garrett Nock, 5, and his sister, Lauren-Taylor, 4, both of Longboat Key, who stopped by after Holiday Night of Lights on St. Armands. The Nocks stopped by to thank firefighters for participating in the parade with their sirens blaring.
Claire Hunter shaped the Longboat Observer in its early days with 18-inch scissors and an X-ACTO knife. She wielded these tools to ensure each word of text was precisely placed, along with a keen eye for copy editing and a strict adherence to grammar
rules. Her knack for details balanced her husband, Longboat Observer founder Ralph Hunter. “He was the dreamer, the idea man,” said retired Longboat Observer Senior Editor Dora Walters. “It was Claire
who saw that his ideas materialized and deadlines were met (and) kept him down to earth at times.” Claire Hunter died Sunday, File photo Dec. 15, at home in Bradenton. Claire and Ralph Hunter at the old Tiny’s She was 84. of Longboat Key. The Hunters were marSEE HUNTER / 12A ried for 35 years.
REBEL WITH A CLAUS
+ Commission savors the sunshine The weather on Longboat Key was cloudy on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 11, but the Longboat Key Town Commission stayed in the sunshine, as far as the Longboat Observer could tell. Earlier that day, town staff was prepping for a marathon workshop. With an agenda that included hot-button issues such as the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, they anticipated the meeting would stretch into the evening and require a dinner break. But, with recent allegations of Sunshine Law violations reported in the Longboat Observer relating to changes to the Urban Land Institute committee, Town Manager Dave Bullock invited the press to feast on Publix subs alongside the commission to confirm commissioners were staying in the sunshine. One topic of conversation throughout the meal: the weather.

Colony receives four-month extension
Commissioners extended the deadline for the property’s grandfathered status but will hold a public hearing to determine whether the town should take action to demolish the Colony’s buildings.
Longtime Colony Beach & Tennis Resort General Manager Katie Klauber Moulton kept lowering her head and shaking it in disgust. Longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber sighed and turned away from the screen on more than one occasion. And Longboat Key commis-
sioners stared wide-eyed at the scene unfolding in front of them. That scene was a series of photographs of Colony buildings displayed Dec. 11, in dimmed Town Hall chambers, during a special meeting. They showed rotting wood, concrete deterioration beyond the point of repair and
buildings showing signs of collapsing. The photographs were part of a 67-page report from Building Official Wayne Thorne and a recommendation from Town Manager Dave Bullock, who requested that existing units at the Colony be torn down.
The commission hasn’t seen the last of these images. Commissioners approved a four-month extension of the grandfathered tourism units at the shuttered resort Dec. 11, making the latest tourism extension
