At a Nov. 12 Laurel Park Neighborhood Association meeting, some residents voiced concerns that a planned multiuse recreational trail could bring traffic into the neighborhood and cause parking issues. Bill Nichols, the project manager
with the city’s public works department, spoke at the meeting to provide an update on the construction efforts, which have currently reduced Brother Geenen Way to one lane. In addition to establishing a 10-footwide recreational trail across Osprey
Avenue and the Hudson Bayou that will connect Laurel Park to Burns Square, the city is installing two new pipes for drainage improvements in the area. Nichols

+ Observer papers win contest Local Media Association, a nonprofit, professional trade association comprising more than 2,000 newspapers in the United Stares and Canada, announced the winners of its 2013 Newspaper of the Year contest. LMA honored six newspapers — four weeklies and two dailies — as the top newspapers in their respective divisions. For the second consecutive year, the Longboat Observer (circulation between 10,001 and 22,500) and Sarasota Observer (circulation between 22,501 and 37,500) won first place in their divisions. Judges comments for the Sarasota Observer included: Editorial: “Strong mix of news, public service and features. Well-written and strongly edited. Amazing amount of ‘refrigerator news’ for readers to clip. ‘SEASONS’ magazine is a special treat.” Other comments: “Much to read and savor here. Everything about this publication is well though-out.” The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute, Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo., judged the contest.

County sees silver lining in project’s delay County officials say two construction projects at Siesta Beach will have little impact on beach access and may ultimately lead to increased efficiency and cost savings. The Beach Road Drainage Improvements project, now projected to be complete in April, will overlap construction work with the Siesta Beach Improvements by more than three months — a development that
may ultimately save the county money, officials said. The $4.5 million Beach Road Drainage Improvements project is designed to collect rainwater runoff from the Siesta Beach parking lot in a retention pond,
and then pass the runoff through ultraviolet-light filtration units before being pumped through a 2,000-foot underground pipe into the Gulf of Mexico. The project’s intent is to protect Gulf water from contaminated run-
off; it is not expected, however, to alleviate flooding on Beach Road. The $21.5 million Siesta Beach Improvements, a separate proj-
