OUR TOWN + 93 and counting When longtime Longboat Key businesswoman and Sarasota resident Edith Barr Dunn turned 80, she donated $100 to the birthday pot at the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club. That was $20 more than what it is typically expected — $1 dollar for every birthday. “I thought I’d put that extra $20 in as a gift, thinking I’d never reach 100,” Barr-Dunn said. “But I’ve kept putting in $100 every year since.” This past Sunday, Oct. 20, Barr-Dunn celebrated her 93rd birthday. “I don’t walk too well anymore,” she told us. “But I can sure drive.”

Sarasota’s crime rate raises alarm FBI crime statistics expose disparities between the city of Sarasota and the rest of the county and place Sarasota in the same league as major crime hot spots nationwide. City of Sarasota residents are up to 10 times more likely to be the victims of crime than residents living in other ZIP codes throughout the county, according to a geographic analysis of crime in Sarasota County. That piece of information,
along with the city’s high per capita crime rate (which outpaces crime in Chicago, New Orleans and Washington, D.C.), highlights an ongoing struggle with crime in the city that threatens to diminish its appeal as an attractive venue for tourism and business.
“The numbers don’t lie,” Sarasota Mayor Shannon Snyder said. “We’re not doing a good job. We’re raising taxes and our crime rate is still going up.” A statistical analysis of crime in Sarasota County by Esri, an international geodatabase sup-
plier, broke down criminal activity in Sarasota by ZIP code using a metric based on FBI crime data, called the crime index. The area’s crime indices are scaled against the national average, which has

Reid ousted as Sarasota County administrator
Sarasota County commissioners vote to terminate Randall Reid after lackluster performance reviews. Sarasota County Administrator Randall Reid has been handed his two-week notice. Four of five Sarasota County commissioners voted to terminate Reid Wednesday, Oct. 23, with Commissioner Nora Patterson as the lone dissenter. Reid Commission Chairwoman Carolyn Mason made the motion after discussing
three lackluster performance reviews given to Reid by commissioners. With just a 3-2 vote, the commission would have had to convene in three weeks to make the final decision, but Commission Vice Chairman Charles Hines, who gave Reid a positive review, voted in favor of termination so
the issue didn’t “fester.” “I don’t think you grasped the job from a business perspective,” said Commissioner Joe Barbetta, who penned one of the negative performance reviews. Barbetta said Reid and his staff were consistently reactive in situations rather than proactive. The county’s contract with Reid requires a written notice to the county administrator two weeks before he is terminated
without cause. Commissioners voted on a suggestion from Patterson to appoint Deputy County Administrator Tom Harmer at the top county position in the interim. The county hired Reid less than two years ago in the wake of the procurement scandal that ended with the firing of former County Administrator Jim Ley. “I wish it hadn’t gotten to this point,” said Commissioner Christine Robinson.
