‘Hal’ of famer Commissioner Hal Lenobel resigned this week after 12-and-a-half years. He is the longest-serving commissioner in recent town history.

“Sparkey” the turtle crawls back to the Gulf after she dug a nest, filled it with eggs and covered it.

Hal Lenobel’s past and present colleagues list his achievements on the Longboat Key Town Commission: He was at the dais during the construction of a new Town Hall and public-safety complex, according to former Mayor Jeremy Whatmough, and

helped to bring the project in line with its budget. He was a guiding force in shaping the town’s beach policy, according to former Mayor Joan Webster. Many of his accomplishments were intangible, Vice Mayor David Brenner said.

“He brought a sense of stability that lasted for a whole decade,” Brenner said. “Citizens had a face that they recognized on an ongoing basis. Over the last few years, there were new faces, but he was the

+ Laborious Fourth of July On the Fourth of July, Country Club Shores residents David and Sharron Schar and the Reynolds family went to the beach between the Privateer and Beachplace to watch Siesta Key’s fireworks from a distance. Suddenly, they saw a shadowy figure creeping up on them from the water. Upon investigation, they realized the shadow was a sea turtle who was about the lay her nest. The families gave her space and kept the area clear of pedestrians as the turtle, nicknamed “Sparkey,” dug her nest, laid her eggs and exited the beach. The fireworks weren’t the only sight to which visitors were treated to that night.

+ Bud Collins misses Wimbledon This year’s Wimbledon was the first one Bud Collins had missed in 44 consecutive years. The longtime Longboat Key vacationer and tennis writer, announcer and fan fell at his hotel room last fall during the U.S. Open and ruptured his left quad tendon. Collins has undergone nine surgeries. He has seen many of the great and memorable matches but had to miss the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon. Collins is hoping to attend the U.S. Open at the end of the summer and maybe even pick up playing the sport again.

BEACH BLOWOUT

Debby is a wash for Beer Can Island The north end’s beach received a boon when Debby brought a bigger Beer Can Island. Town Manager David Bullock proposed a new name for the recently enlarged beach at Greer Island, often referred to as Beer Can Island: “You might call it ‘the town of Longboat Key taxpayer contribution to Beer Can Island,’” he told

the Longboat Key Town Commission at its Monday, July 2 meeting. The expanded beach is yet another part of Tropical Storm Debby’s aftermath. Last summer, the town spent $4.5 million to place 133,000 cubic yards of sand along the se-

verely eroded north-end beach. Preliminary estimates suggest that the area lost 150,000 cubic yards of sand during Debby’s stay, with much of the sand drifting north to Beer Can Island. The expansion of dry sand during low tide brings the edge of the

island next to an area with strong currents, according to Bullock. “If anyone ventures off of the beach that is expecting to have a nice, calm walk ... they’re likely to
