The town compiled a report in May detailing the issues that need to be addressed before units at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort could be re-occupied. It totaled 85 pages. But, some Colony unit owners hope to move forward and reopen a limited number of units. “We have seen some activity related to improvements,” Town Manager David Bullock told the
Longboat Key Town Commission at its Monday, July 2 regular meeting of the 237-unit property at which longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber is currently the sole occupant. “Nothing that would trigger a permit.” Colony Beach & Tennis Association board member Blake Fleetwood confirmed to the Longboat Observer that two
weeks earlier, the board voted to assess unit owners $1,000 each to maintain $237,000 as a contingency toward re-opening a limited number of units in the Association’s current budget. The Association is considering re-opening at least 40 units, Fleetwood said. Bullock told the commission that the town’s role is centered only on codes.
What’s red, white and blue all over? Hopefully you, your family, your dog and your friends at the annual Freedom Fest parade and celebration. The parade lineup will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 4, between Bank of America and SunTrust Bank on Bay Isles Road; the parade starts at 9 a.m. This year’s event will honor late Police Chief Al Hogle; his wife, Leslie, will grand marshal the parade. There will be a celebration following the parade featuring games and a butterfly release in Bicentennial Park (next to Longboat Key Town Hall).

Commission sets 1.8872 maximum millage rate The maximum rate for the upcoming fiscal year is identical to this year’s rate, but property owners could see new taxes for north-end erosion control.
+ George Skestos appointed to board Longboat Key resident George Skestos was appointed to the New College of Florida Board of Trustees. He will complete the term of the late Robert Peterson, who died in March. Skestos served on the Ohio State University Board of Trustees for nine years and served one year as president. He has also served as the chairman of the University East Hospital Board. In 2000, Skestos moved from Owosso, Mich., to Longboat Key.
But the idea still generated discussion among commissioners, many who had questions about the legal disputes surrounding the property. “How can we grant permits when the ownership of the property is in question?” asked Commissioner Lynn Larson.

Fireworks lit up the night sky Monday, July 2, during the fourth annual Boom Boom on the Bay at Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub. Many people enjoyed watching the show from their boats, as well as from shore, and they dined at Mar Vista prior to the 10-minute-long firework display. Longboat Key taxpayers won’t see a millage increase for the town’s operating expenses. That’s because the Longboat Key Town Commission voted unanimously at its Monday, July 2 regular meeting on a maximum millage identical to the current rate of 1.8872 mills for the 2012-13 fiscal year. But, taxpayers are still likely to get a new tax if plans for north-end erosion control structures move forward, as town officials hope, with construction possibly beginning in late spring 2013. The commission voted on a maximum millage rate of .8000 for Erosion Control District A and .2000 for Erosion Control District B. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property valuation. Voters approved the taxes in March 2011
