Floridays’ hotel concept chosen The developer promises it will be a top 10 Florida hotel.
+ Happy Father’s Day! After 2,997 votes were cast in the Sarasota Observer’s online Father’s Day photo contest, a winner has been named. Rachel Stepanov submitted a photo of her husband, Yevgeniy, and their triplets: Charlotte, Adrik and Natalia. The photo received 1,936 votes and was named the winner. Stepanov submitted the photo as a thank-you to her husband, who is not only a great father but a great husband, she says. Congratulations to all who submitted photos, and an early “Happy Father’s Day!”
It came down to two. One hotel concept would cater efficiently to a downtown business crowd; the other concept would provide tourists with a high-end, artsy place to stay. Both concepts could work — the latter won. Thursday, June 7, a city committee unanimously
chose Floridays Development Co. to build an independent boutique hotel on the site on North Palm Avenue at Cocoanut Avenue. The concept chosen will provide competition for the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota and the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, because it targets guests seeking
a top hotel destination. The boutique concept beat out an Embassy Suites hotel project submitted by Jebco Ventures Inc. and the McKibbon Hotel Group. Floridays President Angus

PENSION PROBLEMS

Police department rejects contract The commission is poised to make changes to its police officer pension plan, even though its officers soundly rejected the changes. The Sarasota Police Department’s union unanimously rejected a contract by the city of Sarasota that included pensionordinance modifications staff made at the direction of the Sarasota City Commission.
In total, Sarasota Police Benevolent Association President Mick McHale told the Sarasota Observer that 90% of the eligible members participated in the vote. All 142 police officer union
votes cast and all six police lieutenant votes cast were against the contract. The city was made aware of the union’s ratification rejection in a Thursday, June 7, letter sent to interim City Manager Terry
Lewis by the Southwest Chapter of the Florida Police Benevolent Association Inc. McHale said the contract was soundly rejected because of changes proposed to a city ordinance that outlines police union pension benefits.
