Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle died this week in a motorcycle accident in North Carolina. In his wake, he leaves a department transformed by his commitment to service.

Mary Lou Johnson has photographed a snowy plover nest on Longboat Key. The endangered snowy plover has an estimated 200 nests in Florida. Nests are said to contain about three eggs each.

+ The word from the waters April 30 marked the birthday of four cygnets produced by swan parents, Alan and Beverly. And, after a long wait, Stan left Wendy at the nest to swim in the waters near the nest. Swankeeper David Novak originally took this as a sign of possible egg infertility. But Wednesday, May 9, at least two cygnets from Wendy and Stan’s nest hatched.

The town advertised the position of Longboat Key police chief in late 2002; it received 98 applications. Four U.S. Marshals wanted the position. So did supervisors with the Drug Enforcement Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigations, a U.S.

Navy regional security director in Pearl Harbor and the leader of the United Nations police mission in Bosnia. Town Manager Bruce St. Denis was convinced he already knew the man for the job.
