FPL busts myths at SKA meeting Representatives from Florida Power & Light Co. spoke at the monthly meeting of the Siesta Key Village Association to temper health and privacy concerns about the firm’s smart meters.

+ Beautiful moment Melissa Herron and her husband, Mike, of Bradenton, are active members of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch. Herron is used to watching Longboat Key’s spectacular sunrises, but this sunset photo, taken on Greer Island, was a more rare sighting for her. She said the lighting was spectacular on this January night, and she couldn’t resist capturing this universal moment between a mother and child, when the mom was showing her child the beauty of the world. Herron’s daughter, Danielle Etienne, jokingly asked her mom why she didn’t submit a photo of the two of them for The Observer’s Mother’s Day photo contest. “This appeals to everyone,” Herron said of the photo. This year’s contest included 25 submissions, and 3,993 total votes were cast. Herron’s winning photo received 1,370 votes. As the winner, Herron will receive a $75 gift certificate.

Ahead of the Florida Power & Light Co. plans to install smart meters in Sarasota County, a project manager representing the electric company took questions and presented a video to the Siesta Key Association to

ease resident concerns about the switch. Project Manager Steve Anderson led the session, which proceeded with near silence from SKA members to accommodate quiet computer speakers sup-

porting the video. He explained that FPL expects to complete the meter switch for its 4.6 million customers by 2013; Sarasota County meter upgrades are expected to start in November. New meters come with a

wealth of benefits, Anderson said. They emit a radio frequency to FPL allowing it to alert the firm when a customer (or customers) loses power. Instead of waiting

Expansion plans The owners of Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar are using lessons learned in their 18 years of experience operating a business in Siesta Key Village to expand their brand. Like the five types of oysters Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar has on its menu, the island-themed restaurant and bar captures the unique flavor of each region in which its restaurants reside. And now, Daiquiri Deck, a

brand held by SMG that was founded in 1993, will expand its regional focus once again this fall with a new restaurant in Venice. SMG co-owner and Vice President of Operations Matt Grover,

Daiquiri Deck President and coowner Troy Syprett and Daiquiri Deck Vice President and co-owner Russell Matthes plan to apply the experiences they’ve collected operating the Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar, a Siesta Key Village land-

mark, in their latest business endeavor. “It’s really defined the criteria we require to open a Daiquiri Deck,” Grover explained about
