+ Runners lace up for good cause Mote Marine Laboratory’s 26th annual Run for the Turtles was a success, Saturday, April 7, with more than 1,000 runners and walkers. Both the one-mile fun run/walk and 5K took place on Siesta Public Beach. The run, a joint effort between Mote, the Manasota Track Club and Sarasota County Parks and Recreation, helps to raise money to help support Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program study. Sarasota architect Don Lawson described the proposed building as “forward looking in terms of its shapes and designs.” Residents of the surrounding Longbeach Village called the structure “commercial looking” and out of place in the historic neighborhood. After hearing concerns from

residents at a Wednesday, April 4 meeting, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, decided not to file a request for an amendment and extension of its existing site plan two days later as planned. Instead, Tracy A. Wagner, Ring-

ling vice president of finance and administration, sent a letter April 6 to Town Planner Ric Hartman withdrawing a request for the amendment to go before the town’s Planning & Zoning Board April 17. “In meeting with the Village Association, a number of concerns

were raised that Ringling College of Art and Design believes merit further consideration and conversation with the association, surrounding neighbors, and our Advisory Council,” Wagner wrote. “Although we are eager to move our plans forward, we wish to do so in a respectful and thoughtful manner. I very much appreciate all the time and effort

The osprey nest that was located on the traffic light at the New Pass Bridge was removed this week by the Florida Department of Transportation. Because it was covering the traffic signal, it posed a safety issue for drivers. There were no eggs or chicks in the nest.

Key Club employees rescue two teens caught in riptide Hailey Childress, 12, of Seattle, and her 15-year-old cousin, Reid Elkins, were having fun on their boogie-boards only an hour before they were swept off in the riptide Friday, April 6. The pair, who was visiting their grandparents, Howard

and Janice Tibbals, residents at L’Ambiance, were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico near the Longboat Key Club and Resort. Approximately 5-foot waves were crashing over their heads, and the current was preventing them from swimming back in to shore.

Hailey is a competitive swimmer and has set records in her hometown, and Reid used to swim competitively as well; but the riptide swept them further out. “We tried to swim but stayed
