No real-estate parcel is more valuable to the city than a vacant sliver of property along the bayfront that sits between the Hyatt Regency, Sarasota and the G.WIZ Science Museum along Boulevard of the Arts. But commissioners decided to hold off on selling
the parcel to interested buyers until its staff assesses if G.WIZ officials would be willing to restructure what left of an approximately seven-year lease with the city and consider relocating the science museum to another location in town. G.WIZ Executive Director

+ New College students win prize New College students Rozalyn Crews and Evan Giomi won the top prizes in the 2012 Student Archaeology Grant contest, sponsored by the Time Sifters Archaeology Society. They were recognized for their research in the fields of anthropology and archaeology. In her paper, Crews explored how the Calusa Indians might have experienced their social and environmental landscapes. Giomi’s paper investigate the issues of colonialism and Christianity in the church complexes of Lalibela, in northern Ethiopia.

Five Points benches will remain removed Sarasota city commissioners agreed Monday that putting benches back in Selby Five Points Park will only recreate a problem that has disappeared. The Sarasota City Commission voted unanimously Monday to keep benches out of Selby Five Points Park, citing as their main reason for doing so the recommendations of the Sarasota Police Department and two organiza-
tions that are champions of the homeless community. The benches were pulled out of the park last summer after residents and business owners complained they attracted transients and panhandlers who intimidated
them and didn’t allow them to stroll into nearby shops. Sarasota Police Lt. Randy Boyd told commissioners that, without a doubt, the
