Students spend spring break in Guatemala
Wakeland students Gavin Klein and Rebekah Spiegelman visited students attending Wakeland’s sister school, Chiquic Elementary. East County student Gavin Klein had something special in mind for this year’s spring break. Klein, a student at Wakeland Elementary, wanted to visit some friends he’d made over the last
year — in Guatemala. “I would run up the mountain (to get to there faster),” Gavin said. “I really wanted to get back to the school. I wanted to see them.”
Jeremiah Blalock may become a regular blood donor. In just his first time donating, the Braden River High School senior rolled away in a brand new 2012 KIA Soul. Blalock was the winner of the “Give from the Heart, Get into a Soul” campaign from Friendly KIA of New Port Richey and Florida Blood Services. More than 50,000 donors gave blood during the fourmonth contest. Seventeen finalists were chosen, one per week, and Blalock was the lucky winner in the grand prize drawing held March 10.
Since 2007, Wakeland has been a “sister school” with Chiquic Elementary School in Guatemala. Gavin visited the school in person

Horseshoe Cove residents share smarts at Braden River When Braden River High School teacher Susan Busby reached out to nearby Horseshoe Cove to recruit volunteer tutors, more than 20 residents offered to donate their time. BRADEN RIVER — Horseshoe Cove resident Mardean Francis doesn’t miss teaching. At least not the daily grind that goes along with the profession. After spending 25 years as a reading and language-arts teach-
er, Francis was more than happy not to have to grade another paper or prepare another quiz or final exam. But, when it comes to interacting with students — that’s an entirely different story.
So, when Braden River reading teacher Susan Busby spoke to a group of Horseshoe Cove residents in January about the possibility of tutoring students in read-

MANATEE COUNTY — Fifteen years ago, the notion of staying with one company long enough to retire was one that no longer crossed Glen Goodfellow’s mind. That all changed in 1998, when Goodfellow was hired to be a cart-pusher for Walmart. From there, Goodfellow was named the store’s produce manager and eventually the salary manager over produce. Throughout his budding career, Goodfellow had become so impressed with the company’s culture and desire to help its employees grow and flourish within the company that
