+ More than 150 readers recognized More than 150 Sarasota County youngsters won tickets to see the Baltimore Orioles take on the Pittsburgh Pirates March 14, at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. They had participated in the Orioles Big League Reader program, sponsored for the second consecutive year by the Sarasota County libraries and the Baltimore Orioles. Children who read three or more books in the month of February received a free ticket to the game. Steve Barosh, 10, who plays in the 10-and-under division of the Venice Little League, was selected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The Sarasota County Commission issued a proclamation designating March 14 as Big League Reader Day.

Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight reflects on the accomplishments of the last year and looks for focus areas in the months to come. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office recently published its 2011 annual report for the county. In the report, Tom Knight, who is serving his fourth year as sheriff of Sarasota County, addressed

information regarding the year’s budget, significant achievements and the most pressing crime issues. Although overall crime increased by a little more than

5% between 2010 and 2011, the report notes that crime remains relatively low in Sarasota, and that even a modest increase in the number of crimes can raise the percentage in a dispropor-

tionate way. The report went on to point out that overall crime is down 6% since 2008, and that DUI arrests in 2011 increased by nearly 6%, marking an increase for the second consecutive year. According to the report, the biggest crime problems facing
