+ Freakonomics Club meets the author Members of Pine View School’s Freakonomics Club came prepared Monday afternoon for a private question-and-answer session with Steven Levitt at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, before he addressed a Ringling Town Hall Lecture Series audience. Notepads in one hand and copies of “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything” in the other, the students engaged in dialogue not just about economics, but also about more personal matters, such as Levitt’s affection for rapper Baby Bash. Pine View senior Thomas Marryott, who founded the club, presented Levitt with a school T-shirt at the conclusion of the session. “Before you guys,” Levitt told the students, “the only fan club I had was two old ladies in New Jersey who would show up with banners.”

The company hired to perform a computer forensics investigation of the city’s Information Technology Department has discovered that former City Manager Bob Bartolotta and Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown were not the only employees who had access to confidential city information that should not

have been available to them. Sylint Group Chief Executive Officer John Jorgensen updated the Sarasota City Commission on the investigation Monday, but he explained it was too early to divulge the names of those other individuals. Jorgensen also reported that his staff believed confidential

city data could be on the personal computer of an employee who had been put on administrative leave. IT Project Manager Sandra Coleman’s personal computer was used last year to access the city’s computer network, according to Sylint officials. “Sandra Coleman’s personal

computer was connected to the city network, and it’s a concern to the city, to ensure there’s no city information on that computer,” Jorgensen said. “We frown heavily on a personal computer being used under these circumstances, and it could be a very costly situation for the city if it must defend itself if someone’s personal information is on another computer

Attorney warns of legal points on hotels The city of Sarasota’s attorney says he believes both downtown hotel proposals could violate a state constitutional provision. City Attorney Bob Fournier told the Sarasota City Commission Monday that he was concerned about legal aspects of both hotel proposals for the city-owned

Palm Avenue site. “Both proposals have ideas that I’m not sure (are) what the commission had in mind when they solicited bids for this project,”

Fournier said. “Both proposals have a development risk and could potentially implicate the city, which causes me pause for concern,” he

added, saying he was offering his remarks in an effort to save both companies time and money, if the commission declined to consider either proposal because of his concerns.
