Faster work plans unveiled The County Commission has set in motion a plan that could lead to the completion of all Siesta Beach improvements by late 2014. The Sarasota County Commission Tuesday unanimously approved a $1,377,421.85 contract for design and permitting services that sets the stage for the Siesta Beach improvements to be completed by the end of 2014 —
10 years earlier than the original timeline. However, the commission asked James Harriott Jr., executive director of public works, and other staff to provide detailed information about how freeing up fund-
ing for a fast-track beach project would affect other construction plans, including the planned new Gulf Gate Library. Harriott said he would make such a presentation in January or February. Harriott said he was optimistic

A ‘NO’ VOTE
By Rachel Brown Hackney | Managing Editor
Poll shows opposition to pedestrian islands plan The majority of Key residents attending a public meeting Tuesday indicated they preferred no action out of five options for improved pedestrian safety on Midnight Pass Road. A straw poll conducted Dec. 6 by representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation showed 51% of about 120 island residents attending a public meeting preferred the state do nothing instead of installing new pedestrian safety measures along a 1-mile stretch of Midnight Pass Road.
During the vote, conducted with electronic devices distributed by FDOT personnel, 39% favored a new option FDOT unveiled during the three-hour meeting at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. That option calls for four crosswalks with flexible, “paddle” signs warning motorists that pedestrians would
be crossing the street. Emergency responders would be able to drive over the signs, FDOT staff said, although it is against the law for regular vehicles to do so. Those crosswalks, which would include flashing lights activated by pedestrians as they prepared to cross the street, would be placed at the Palm Bay Club, Pep-
pertree Bay, Excelsior and Siesta Royale condominium complexes. Brian Bollas, planning and environmental manager for Parsons Brinckerhoff, an FDOT consulting firm, said those locations had been chosen on the basis of a pedestrian crossing count FDOT
