+ High winds blow out bonfire Guests at Freedom Elementary School’s annual bonfire Nov. 18 had a blast despite high winds eliminating the main attraction. As Principal Jim Mennes greeted students and parents and joined in the nighttime fun, he dubbed this year’s event “The Bonfire That Never Was.” Even without the blaze, guests enjoyed food, live music and plenty of time with family and friends. And, grill master Shane Keinz, of Full Belly Meats, did provide some flames every time he flipped his burgers.
The Emmons family is raising money to help children in need by selling handmade wreaths.

WICKET WAYS Fifteen of the top cricket teams from across the world gathered together at Sarasota International Cricket Club for the 2011 Sarasota Six-ASide Festival Nov. 24-27, in Lakewood Ranch. During the festival, the teams were divided into groups and competed in a series of round robin games, with the top two teams advancing to the finals to compete for the Festival Shield. In addition to the tournament, players also enjoyed parties, a gala dinner and a luncheon, among other activities.
+ Pirates to host car show for hero The Braden River High School Pirate family will host the Patrick Lay Memorial Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 4, at the school, 6545 S.R. 70 E., Bradenton. The show, hosted in honor of Braden River graduate and military veteran Spc. 4 Patrick Lay II, who was killed in an IED attack in August in Afghanistan, will benefit the school’s FFA Alumni Scholarship Fund. Festivities include a deejay, vendors, food and a 50/50 raffle. Trophies will be awarded in the following categories: Best Engine, Best Interior, People’s Choice, Best 1950s, Best 1960s and Best 1970s. Vehicle registration runs from 8 to 10 a.m. the day of the show and costs $20.
