Ranch CDDs approve landscaper
For these East County families, Thanksgiving is more than just turkey on the table. It’s a chance to make a difference.
Down to Earth is slated to begin providing services in three community development districts in January.
+ Troop candy drive a success Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero, of Dentistry for Children and Adolescents, says she was pleased with the donations her business received for its annual Candy Drive for the Troops. This year’s drive included a drawing for a $100 VISA gift card, which was won by Ryan and Jennifer Swenson. The office now is starting its Toys for Tots drive. Those wishing to participate may donate new, unwrapped toys by noon Dec. 15, to the office, 7315 Merchant Court, Lakewood Ranch. For more, call 907-7762.

Out-of-Door Academy family Bianca, Roberta, Laszlo and Tom Tengerdy will continue with their Thanksgiving Day tradition of feeding the homeless this year in Colorado while visiting family. Top: Cindy Agner and Dave Wollard both volunteer through Bayside Community Church.
As Lakewood Ranch resident and legendary ESPN commentator Dick Vitale kicked off his college basketball season on ESPN with the Carrier Classic Nov. 11, he also earned a chance to meet the president of the United States. President Barak Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attended the special Carrier Classic game between the University of North Carolina and Michigan State. The game was played on a special court that was built on board the U.S. navy ship, the USS Carl Vinson. Other celebrities attending the game included Brooklyn Decker, Pamela Anderson, Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian, among others.
Out-of-Door Academy student Bianca Tengerdy loves Thanksgiving morning. But, instead of turning on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, for the last three years, she and her family have headed to All Faiths Food Bank, where they serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the homeless. When Bianca learned she and her family would be in Colorado this year to celebrate the 80th birthday of Bianca’s paternal grandmother, the 14-year-old was determined to see their tradition continue. So this year, the Tengerdy family will be serving a

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Three Lakewood Ranch Community Development Districts have selected a new contractor for landscaping services, again moving to replace their current contractor, Garden Leaders. Lakewood Ranch CDDs 1, 4 and 5 agreed Nov. 17 to hire Mount Dora-based Down to Earth for landscaping services, starting Jan. 1. “We asked staff to go through the (selection) process, and my attitude is whatever they come back with — it’s in our best interest to respect what staff has done,” CDD 4 Michael Griffin said of moving forward with Down to Earth. Garden Leaders, which filed a lawsuit against CDDs 1, 4, 5 and the Inter-District Authority in August, alleging they violated Sunshine open meetings laws during their vendor selection process, dropped the lawsuit in September after the boards agreed to redo the selection process. The company, however, had legal representation and a court reporter in attendance at the meeting. Paralegal Michael Barfield, who represented Garden Leaders’ attorney Andrea Mogensen at the meeting, said a decision of whether to litigate likely would be made this week, after the East County Observer went to press. “We are very concerned about defects in the process that has occurred, as well as Sunshine law violations that continue (to happen),” Barfield said.
