+ Doctors office staff plays dress-up Centre Shops Family Practice was full of the Halloween spirit Monday, Oct. 31. In fact, there wasn’t a doctor in sight — only a stethoscope-clad Nascar fan (aka Dr. Pamela Letts). Resident nurse Winnie Schroeder, FSU medical student Kathryn Winn, Amanda Wilson, Letts, Geri O’Brien and resident dog Bella Letts were disguised as a variety of characters for the day.
David Bullock pulled into Longboat Key Town Hall at 7:37 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. He usually arrives at work by 7:30 a.m., but his new gig as Longboat Key interim town manager means a slightly longer commute. He didn’t have a key yet to
Town Hall, so town receptionist Eva Waldroup — who also gets to work early each morning — let him in the door. Six hours into his first day on the job, Bullock had met with department heads and spoken to three of seven commissioners. He
got a 30-second lesson on how to use his office phone, although he hadn’t used it for a phone call yet. He continued the research he began more than a month ago on issues such as the town’s beaches

+ Children travel a long(boat) way for Halloween Madeline Geddes, from Kingston, Canada, loves visiting Longboat Key. Her grandfather has been visiting the island for 28 years, and he brought Maddy for her first visit a few years ago. This year was Enrico Transcendi’s first time visiting Longboat Key from his home in San Michele, Italy. The pair took a break from swimming in the pool Monday, Oct. 31, to visit the Old Salty Dog with their families followed by “Fright Night” on St. Armands Circle.
+ Daylight saving time ends Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 7, which means it’s time to turn back your clocks Saturday night. Longboat Key Fire Rescue is asking residents to take the time to change their smoke-alarm batteries at the same time they change their clocks.

The other challenge
by Robin Hartill | City Editor
Key Club motion denied; writ challenge moves forward Sarasota County 12th Circuit Court Judge Charles Roberts has denied a request from the Longboat Key Club and Resort to dismiss a petition for a writ of certiorari filed by the Islandside Property Owners Coalition (IPOC) and L’Ambiance and
Sanctuary associations against the Longboat Key Club and Resort and the town of Longboat Key. The ruling means that IPOC and the condominium associations will present their challenge in a Nov. 16 hearing. They claim
that the town violated its own codes when the Longboat Key Town Commission approved the Key Club’s proposed $400 million Islandside redevelopment project in June 2010.

The writ of certiorari petition isn’t the only challenge the Islandside project faces. Arguments have not yet been scheduled in the de novo challenge, in which IPOC and L’Ambiance and Sanctuary condominium associations will seek a de novo, or new, hearing in court to challenge the project’s consistency with the town’s Comprehensive Plan. The writ of certiorari challenges the ordinance the Town Commission adopted to approve the project.
