IT restructuring irks Bartolotta The city manager believes the Sarasota City Commission’s decision to transfer the Information Technology Department out of his office is a reflection on his management ability.

+ Moving day is a roaring success Two Men and a Truck’s David Walkley and Brad Durrance were surprised when handed their job sheet for the day recently with instructions to move two full-mount trophies of African lions from Sarasota to Gainesville, to be displayed in the Florida Museum of Natural History on the University of Florida campus. David Mitchem, operations manager, supervised loading the unusual and valuable cargo. The lions were donated by the family of the late Sarasota attorney Richard E. Nelson, who was a 1955 graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Law.
+ Learn how to grant wishes The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Northern Florida will be hosting a wish-granting training session Saturday, Oct. 1, for volunteers in the Suncoast Region. The training session will teach volunteers how to determine a child’s wish, different wish-granting techniques, policies and guidelines and how to grant the actual wish. Ideal wish-granters have great communication skills, commitment and are patient. You must be 21 or older to participate. To register for the class or other volunteer opportunities, contact Stephanie Smith at 407-622-4673, Ext. 201 or email ssmith@ wishcentral.org.
Sarasota city commissioners voted 3-2 at their Monday, Sept. 19, regular meeting to approve a new city organizational chart that transfers the IT department from City Manager Bob Bartolotta’s office to the office of City Clerk and Auditor Pamela Nadalini.
The concept was proposed last month by Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, who believes the auspices of the IT Department can be handled more efficiently through the clerk’s office, which is in charge of all city information requests. Caragiulo and Commissioners
Willie Shaw and Shannon Snyder voted for the change. Mayor Suzanne Atwell and Vice Mayor Terry Turner voted against it. “I have to take this action as proposed as a vote of no confidence,” Bartolotta said. “I believe I’m the CEO and responsible for administrative actions, and I
take those responsibilities very seriously.” Bartolotta questioned why the move was being made. He said that he hasn’t been made aware of any issues with the IT Department and the way it’s currently

FESTIVAL REVIVED
by Kurt Schultheis | City Editor
Chalk Festival off, back on again The Sarasota Chalk Festival, scheduled for Nov. 1, was in jeopardy of being canceled because of the Sarasota City Commission’s grant-permitting change. In the span of three days, the Sarasota Chalk Festival was declared cancelled and then appeared to be revived. Sarasota Chalk Festival founder and Chairwoman Denise Kowal announced Monday night that a 4-1
vote by the Sarasota City Commission had potentially ruined any chance of the festival’s return for its fifth anniversary in November. Each November, the Chalk Festival colors South Pineapple Avenue and attracts both international artists
and children, who have painted the blocks of the city street since 2007. This year’s festival is scheduled to begin Nov. 1 and run for seven days. The Sarasota City Commission
