+ Booker High holds ceremony The morning of Sept. 9, Booker High School held a flag-unfurling assembly in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Some of the students present attended Emma E. Booker Elementary when President George W. Bush addressed the nation. Four students in the ROTC program presented the Florida state flag and the American flag while the school released a giant flag from the roof of the theater. The school participated in a moment of silence for lives lost that day, and the band played the national anthem.
The Sarasota Police Department union has rejected a special magistrate’s recommendation on the ongoing contract dispute with the city. In a 12-page ruling issued Aug. 23, Punta Gorda-based Special Magistrate William McGinnis Jr. stated the Sarasota Police De-

Districts demand increased levels of service Both the Downtown Improvement District and St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District have plans to spend more for cleaning and landscaping services than the city can provide.
Fed up with what they perceive as subpar maintenance and cleaning by the city, both the Downtown Improvement District and St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District are planning to spend more district dollars to achieve the level of service
they want. J MAR Cleaning Services began work this week on a $2,407 DIDfunded sidewalk cleaning project in the DID district “The DID decided to have the sidewalks cleaned because the city only pays to have Main Street
and Lemon Avenue sidewalks cleaned about twice a year,” said DID Operations Manager John Moran. And as soon as next month, the DID could decide whether it wants to spend more to approve a new landscape maintenance ser-
vices contract. In an effort to perform more efficient services, the DID will receive bids from contractors that are willing to provide downtown landscape maintenance services
