+ Observer welcomes Mallory Gnaegy The Longboat Observer welcomes Mallory Gnaegy this week to our staff as community editor. Make sure to say “hello” when you see her around town! Gnaegy is born-and-reared St. Louis girl and a recent graduate from the University of Missouri with dual degrees in journalism and English. In college she was involved with Alpha Phi sorority and was the music editor at Vox, a city magazine. She taught a Sunday school acting troupe, called “Acting Up,” and also played on a softball team in her free time. But if there is anything you should know about her, it is that music keeps her heart beating. Singing is her forte, but thanks to both of her music-teaching grandmothers, she has dabbled in many instruments. She loves attending concerts and shows and is excited because she has heard Sarasota has some spectacular choral and music ensembles. Gnaegy is also excited to be so close to baseball spring-training spots — she is a die-hard Cardinals fan. She is looking forward to exploring Longboat Key and meeting as many readers as possible.

ciation Inc. agree to 24 findings of fact in IPOC’s ongoing challenge of Comprehensive Plan amendments passed by the town related to the Key Club’s $400 million proposed Islandside redevelopment project. The findings of fact include:

• That IPOC “engaged in political action efforts” on behalf of selected candidates for re-election in the March 2010 Town Commission race and in support of Amendment 4 on the November 2010 general election ballot. • “Admits IPOC as an entity, has

no standing to bring this lawsuit and its standing is dependent upon the standing, if any, of the condominium associations that are its ‘constituent members.’” • “Admits that condominium

Pension contributions higher than average A Florida League of Cities report shows that the town’s required pension contributions make up a higher-than-average share of payroll costs. A recent Florida League of Cities report states that the town of Longboat Key is one of just six cities in the state of Florida in which required pension contributions exceed 50% of police payroll costs. The town is also one of 19 Flor-

ida cities in which required firefighter pension costs exceed 35% of payroll costs, according to the report. The report states that for the 2010-11 fiscal year, the town’s required police and fire contribu-

tions were $2,002,000. Required police pension contributions totaled 64.85% of police payroll costs, the report said, while required firefighter pension contributions totaled 44.14% of firefighter payroll costs.

According to the report, the average required contribution for cities statewide was 19.14% of police payrolls and 17.08% of firefighter payrolls. Commissioner Phill Younger said that he was “not a bit” surprised by the report’s findings.
