Homeless battle continues After a downtown resident bused in homeless people to dine in front of the vice mayor’s house, Mayor Suzanne Atwell attacked that stunt.
Catering meals for the homeless in front of the vice mayor’s house and accusing the city attorney of not knowing the law was too much for Mayor Suzanne Atwell to take. She took the unusual step of opening a City Commission
meeting with a statement criticizing the person behind those stunts, downtown resident and radio host Phil Grande. “It’s time to respond to the vitriolic emails,” said Atwell Monday. “It has gone beyond reasonable standards.”
Grande began July 11 by paying for bus rides for the homeless to eat and hang out in front of Vice Mayor Terry Turner’s house in the upscale Cherokee Park neighborhood.

+ Monument donor celebrates 90 years Thousands of folks have taken photos at the “Unconditional Surrender” monument in Bayfront Park. How appropriate, then, that the famous photo of a sailor kissing a nurse should adorn the 90th birthday cake of Jack Curran, who donated the statue to city of Sarasota. Long-time friends Paul Kirkham and his wife, Cyndi Fearn, and Bill and Marie Ficco shared the occasion with Curran at Michael’s On East a few days after his June 23 birthday. Curran joined the U.S. Navy on the second day of the war and served four years in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. “(I am) so glad that the young people are seeing the monument and beginning to understand what it represents,” Curran said.
