+ Longboat’s longest standing July 4? “We wouldn’t know what to do if we weren’t here,” said Kristi Goldsmith, referring to the traditional Fourth of July bash held at the bayfront home of her father-in-law, Jack Goldsmith. The family has celebrated Independence Day there every year since the house was built in 1967. Jack Goldsmith, his sons and their wives, Mel and Jan Goldsmith, of Longboat Key, and Larry and Kristi Goldsmith, of Memphis, welcome 50 to 100 guests depending on who’s in town. This year, hostess Betty Ng was wearing a gift T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Commander in Chef.”

Max Goldner spends summers on the east end of Long Island, N.Y., where he looks forward to his daily walk on the beach. The 5-year-old Wheaton terrier has some restrictions: He is required to stay on his leash, and on some beaches, he is limited to evening hours. Max’s owners, Nelson and Laurin Goldner, think he would enjoy

a day at the beach when he returns home to Longboat Key. But, because of current ordinances, his parents have to drive him to a beach in St. Petersburg or Venice, where dogs are permitted, in order for him to enjoy the Florida surf and sand. So, last week, Nelson Goldner suggested in an email to Vice May-

or David Brenner a trial period that would allow dogs on the beach — one that could possibly extend from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., allowing the beach to remain dog-free during the day, and would allow dog owners to prove that they’re willing to clean up after their pets.

Jason Berzowski, of Longboat Key Fire Rescue, prepares to drop the tape measure from the top of the cotton plant down to the ground Friday, July 15, at Casa del Mar. This will be the third time that this particular tree has been measured for the Guinness World Records and the sixth time a cotton plant on the Casa del Mar property has secured the title of “World’s Tallest Cotton Plant.”

Casa del Mar’s cotton plant reaches new heights. Records are made to be broken. That adage certainly holds true on Longboat Key during the annual cotton plant measuring ceremony for Guinness World Records. This is Casa del Mar’s sixth entry as the World’s Tallest Cotton Plant. The cotton plant at Casa del Mar underwent its annual height measuring Friday, July 15, by the tennis courts. Longboat Key Fire and Rescue provided a firetruck with a

ladder to allow firefighter/paramedic Jason Berzowski to drop a tape measure from the top of the plant to the ground in order to get a precise measurement. There was a crowd of about 50 people in attendance, and they enjoyed food and drinks while waiting to learn the new recorded height of the cotton plant.
