Emergency-response issue arises The New Pass Bridge log shows that the bridge tender was not notified in 17 different instances this year when an ambulance was headed toward the bridge to reach Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

As is routine, the New Pass Bridge went up for a passing sailboat in the early morning hours May 31. However, a Longboat Key Fire Rescue ambulance was approaching the bridge from the north on Gulf of Mexico Drive at the same time. It was transporting a cardiac-arrest patient from Longboat to Sarasota Memorial
Hospital. The bridge tender, according to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials, was never notified by a 911 operator that an ambulance was approaching and needed to get off the island. If the bridge tender had been notified just minutes earlier, he
or she could have denied a request by a sailboat operator to open the bridge. Former Longboat Key Mayor George Spoll and his wife, Madelyn, were in the front of the line of cars waiting to get over the raised bridge May 31. He says they were

+ Key Club gathers golf balls for troops Longboat Key Club’s golf director, Terry O’Hara, above, is sending thousands of old range balls as well as used clubs from some of the club’s members to a troop in Afghanistan. His brother-inlaw, Danny Mastrovito, has a friend, Scott Roderick, serving there who wanted to be able to hit golf balls on the 200yard driving range that he and his other troop members created. O’Hara is also offering free golf lessons, rounds of golf for four and other perks for returning soldiers.
+ Beach access re-opens this week The North Shore Road beach access will re-open by Friday, July 1, in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa. A $4.5 million north-end emergency beach project is wrapping up this week and has brought 133,000 cubic yards of sand to the area. Beachgoers will be able to access Beer Can Island by foot once again.

Turtles cause flap for flag at Key park Laurin Goldner was driving on Gulf of Mexico Drive just before Memorial Day when she noticed that the American flag at Bicentennial Park at Longboat Key Town Hall was flying in the dark. “I thought that the light had burned out and

that Public Works could replace the light bulb,” Goldner said. She emailed Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa, who told her that the flag was not flying unlit but that staff had lowered the flag because the lighting wasn’t turtle-friendly. The light that illuminated the flag cast a light onto the beach across the street, which is prohibited by town ordinance during turtle-nesting season,
which runs from May to November. Lights that are visible on the beach can disorient nesting female turtles and hatchlings. According to the U.S. Flag Code, any flag flown at dark must be illuminated. So, staff members lowered the flag to ensure that it would not be displayed improperly. Goldner suggested that staff mem-
