Garage payment plan unveiled Details emerge on when the Palm Avenue garage will start charging drivers to park there and the different payment methods available. By Robin Roy | City Editor
Free parking at the Palm Avenue parking garage is expected to end April 1. A recently purchased parking-payment system will be in-
stalled then as the city begins charging drivers to park in the new facility. The $264,000 Parking Access and Revenue-Control System (PARC) is an automated system that will allow 24-hour
access to the garage. The Sarasota Police Department, which now oversees the city’s parking operations and enforcement, will be able to utilize PARC to automate entry, exit, auditing and collections.
“This will be a turnkey system,” said Capt. Jeff Karr, who heads the police department’s parking division. Initial plans are to charge drivers 50 cents per hour, or $40 for a monthly permit. Within a half-mile radius

Laurel Park sign: two sides to story Noticing a change to their neighborhood sign, residents questioned why the city altered it without asking residents and violated its own rules. By Robin Roy | City Editor
The Laurel Park neighborhood-identification sign on Osprey Avenue has occasionally been the target of vandals, who have sprayed graffiti on it. Late last month, some resi-
dents were surprised to see a different kind of paint job on their sign. Despite a city rule that only allows a decoration or logo on one side of the sign, someone had painted the city’s logo on the backside of the sign. “A bush would have looked
better,” said Deborah Dart, who was president of the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association when the city originally installed the sign in 2007. Dart began investigating
