Board sets Colony vote standard high at 91% NEWS EDITOR

It’s possible no more than 70% approval of unit owners is needed to validate a deal between the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association and Unicorp Acquisitions LLC .

But Jay Yablon, president of the association’s board, said board members are uncomfortable with the relatively thin margin.

That’s why the board is aiming higher. The magic number: 91% approval.

“What is very clear to us is if we get above 90%, we’re definitely above the zone where a legal challenge could be sustained,” Yablon said.

That means at least 216 of 237 unit owners must sign off on the plan.

Critical to the deal is convincing longtime unit owner Andy Adams, a Murfreesboro, Tenn., developer who owns 68 units — a 29% share — it’s a good deal.

“Our development committee has been having communications with Andy Adams, and our goal is to work to a point where by the close of voting Nov. 10, we have Andy on board with the development agreement,” Yablon said.

The Longboat Key Town Commission took the first steps Monday toward putting the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort redevelopment plan to voters in a spring referendum.

Commissioners reached 6-1 consensus to forward the issue to first reading and public hearing.

Commissioner Armando Linde voted against it, saying he would wait to see whether Colony unit owners approve the plan.

Chuck Whittall, president of of Unicorp Acquisitions LLC, was all smiles at Town Hall after the favorable referendum vote, but he admitted it’s all up to Colony Beach and Tennis Resort unit owners now.

“I think everybody knows this is a very compelling offer I’ve put on the table,” Whittall told commissioners.

Whittall posted a $1.1 million surety bond Sept. 22 with the town to ensure the property is maintained. He said he has already invested $27 million into the project, including millions on permitting, plus legal fees of up to $50,000 a month on the extensive litigation surrounding the property.

The association’s proposed purchase, sale and development deal with Unicorp Acquisitions LLC would trigger a $1 billion redevelopment of the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive. The resort has been shuttered since 2010, when key bankruptcy rulings in a longtime dispute between unit owners and resort owner Murf Klauber gave unit owners possession of their units.

Board Vice President Bruce Pinsky, a member of the development committee, said redevelopment offers a unique opportunity.

“In our long history of trying to develop the property after all the bankruptcies and litigation, we have a unique opportunity to end all litigation and unify the owners’ 15 acres with the rec-lease parcels,” Pinsky said. “It’s also a stronger and more compelling offer for either cash or units for people who want to stay in them than we ever have had before.”

Yablon said it’s too early to monitor early vote returns yet, because the 86-page deal was only mailed to owners Sept. 15.

Notarized votes are required to be returned by mail.

“We have nothing to report yet,” Yablon said. “I haven’t even got my own vote notarized yet.”

He expressed optimism about obtaining the necessary votes.

Four Longboat Key commissioners voted to reduce underground utilities assessments by $5 million.

So why are some taxpayers upset?

T

he Longboat Key Town Commission has faced a storm of criticism since Sept. 12, when it voted 4-3 on first reading to reduce the amount taxpayers will pay for a neighborhood underground utilities project by $5 million.

Florida Power & Light Co. initially estimated the project’s cost at $23.85 million. But town staff recently determined that estimate could be up to $10 million too high. The decision reflects the fact that costs are expected to be much lower.

So why the criticism over a $5 million reduction?

With costs still uncertain, the commission agreed on first reading to use non-ad valorem revenue from the general fund if a shortfall exists.

The commission won’t vote on final assessments, including the proposed funding changes, until the town obtains accurate cost estimates for the project.

For now, the commission has only earmarked $370,308 in nonad valorem revenue in the 2016-17 fiscal year budget to spend on the project.

But many voters say using nonad valorem funding isn’t what they agreed to in the March 15 referendum, in which the town’s electorate approved issuing bonds of up to $23.85 million based on FPL’s estimated costs. They said they believed the project would be funded through assessments alone; referendum language permitted the use of non-ad valorem revenues “if necessary.”

“Using the ‘weasel words’ of the referendum language to circumvent the method advertised and approved by voters is disingenuous, at best,” wrote Longboat Key resident Bob White in an email to Commissioner Jack Daly.

But critics worry that if project costs are higher than currently anticipated, the commitment to using non-ad valorem funds could impact future budgets.

GMD ASSESSMENTS Annual assessments for the Gulf of Mexico Drive underground utilities project, approved by voters in November 2015, appeared on 2016 tax bills for Longboat Key property owners.

The town has already collected more than $5 million, or 20% of the project costs from residents who prepaid the assessment.

“These funds may have to be replaced by ad valorem property tax revenue, which clearly is not what the voters approved in the referendum,” resident Bob Gault said.

Susan Alexander, of Longboat Key, called the decision “unfortunate.”

“I’m concerned with taking funds from the general fund because taxes could be higher down the road,” Alexander told commissioners at a workshop Monday.

FOOTING THE BILL

The commission has faced criticism over the “55-foot rule” that results in property owners paying higher costs for the project if their properties are located within 55 feet of a power line. The rule is based on the town’s calculation that those properties benefit from the project to a greater extent than those located farther from overhead utilities.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale warned the commission that the town could not legally revise the rule without redoing the entire referendum.

The commission voted 4-3 to reduce the assessments by recalculating the benefit for all properties, reducing the combined amount taxpayers would pay from assessments by $5 million, which amounts to about 50% of the general benefit cost for all properties.

Vice Mayor Terry Gans and commissioners Irwin Pastor, Jack Daly and Ed Zunz voted for the change. Commissioners Phill Younger and Armando Linde and Mayor Jack Duncan opposed it.

Daly defended his vote in a response to White’s email. “… I supported the resolution pledging other town nonad valorem revenues as the only reasonable and necessary way to respond to these stated resident concerns while recognizing such a pledge would be a backup in the event that the actual neighborhood costs do not support the funding of the lower assessments approved by the resolution, which equates to about $5 million of capital or annual funding of some $370,000,” Daly wrote.

But Younger criticized the shift.

“We set the vote up to guarantee it got passed,” he said, referring to the referendum. “And once it passed, we changed the parameters.”

Former Longboat Key Commissioner Lynn Larson has campaigned staunchly against using the non-ad valorem funds. She told commissioners Monday they have broken taxpayers’ trust by earmarking the money from the

general fund, which becomes a de facto tax increase if it’s used.

Larson said if the earmarked money is spent, a property tax increase will be necessary to augment the general fund.

“It’s going to amount to a 3.8% tax increase,” Larson said. “You disagree, but a fact is a fact.”

Vice Mayor Terry Gans said Larson’s math is faulty because it assumes an action not yet taken.

The commission has earmarked the funds to use only if necessary.

“The notion of (it being a) tax increase is clever, but it’s not true,” Gans said. “Nothing was increased. Nothing was raised as a result of this.”

Town Manager Dave Bullock pointed out none of the earmarked non-ad valorem revenue ever has to be spent.

“Ultimately, these funds would only be tapped or used if needed.

You have not decided to spend it yet,” Bullock told commissioners Monday night. “The only thing you’ve voted on was to take a portion of the general fund balance and assign it.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Bullock said moving about $300,000 per year from general revenue to debt service is a “manageable figure.” He said the shift in funding approved by the commission is allowable under the referendum language.

Bullock believes the furor will die once all costs are more definitive. It will take a few months, he said, but surveyors are now working on Longboat Key streets to document every bit of affected infrastructure.

Once costs are nailed down, Bullock said the focus can return to project benefits, such as enhanced safety, hurricane hardening and the aesthetics of no longer having to look at wires overhead.

“It’s one of these legacy projects where 30 years from now they’re going to say, ‘This is really nice,’” Bullock said.

It’s just what the doctor ordered for St. Armands Circle: Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s sixth urgent care center will open Saturday.

The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board purchased the property at 500 John Ringling Blvd., where the St. Armands Medical Center and Re/Max Platinum Realty were previously located, for $3.6 million in December 2014.

Dr. Edward Carlston, who owned both the building and St. Armands Medical Center, relocated to Bahia Vista after the sale was completed.

“We had been looking in that area for a few years and wanted to find a place that was going to allow us to not only cover the St. Armands area, but Longboat Key, Bird Key, Plymouth Harbor, west of the Trail and of course, Lido,” said Frank Morgan, executive director of ambulatory services at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.

The hospital demolished the existing building and began construction on the new 5,387-square-foot facility in summer 2015.

The first level of the new threestory building is covered parking, and the second floor is the urgent care area. Currently, the third floor is not being used.

Red tide, fish kills confirmed along Longboat Key beaches Coughing more than usual? A red tide bloom could be to blame.

ed tide is back on Longboat Key, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and Mote Marine Laboratory officials confirmed Sept. 20.

A week later, it’s also been confirmed on Siesta Key and Lido Key beaches.

Kelly Richmond, FWC communication director, said Friday that this red tide outbreak could last anywhere from two weeks to a few months.

“This is the time of year we get red tide,” Richmond said. “There’s so many factors involved we can’t pinpoint how long it’s going to be here.”

Longboat Key Turtle Watch volunteer Terri Driver was one of the first to notice the smell of red tide. She said she was taking a lunch break on the beach when she “started smelling something unusual.”

“Then, I looked out on the water, and there were hundreds and hundreds (of dead fish),” she said.

By the following weekend, the smells and respiratory challenges had worsened, she said.

“I starting coughing a bit Friday, so it seems to be picking up,” Driver said. “Others are, too. I think it’s getting worse. I just have that coughing feeling. It definitely looks not so pretty out there.”

Fish kills affecting multiple species, along with slight respiratory irritation, have been reported in Manatee and Sarasota counties since Sept. 19.

The latest FWC report on redtide testing was not encouraging.

Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was observed at levels ranging from background (0 to 1,000 cells per liter) to high concentrations (more than 1 million cells per liter) in 41 samples collected from Manatee and Sarasota counties.

FWC is conducting weekly sampling, and Mote is doing daily testing along Sarasota Bay. Longboat Key Public Works Department Director Juan Florensa said red tide is dispersed along around the island.

“Hopefully, it will be a small (outbreak),” Florensa said. “We don’t know yet. We’re holding our breath here, pardon the pun.

Hopefully the tide will take it.”

If the fish kills grow too onerous, the town could mount a cleanup effort, Florensa said.

“In the past, the town has done so when it gets to certain levels,” Florensa said.

After sitting out two years in term-limit imposed political exile, former Mayor Jim Brown filed Sept. 20 to run for the atlarge Longboat Key commission seat in the March 2017 election.

At-large Commissioner Phill Younger will reach the term limit next year, and Brown is seeking his seat.

Brown last served six years in District 4, but he said incumbent Commissioner Jack Daly will likely run again — and Brown is selling his house, so the at-large seat makes sense.

“I’m not leaving Longboat Key, but I’m not sure where I’ll end up,” he said.

Mayor Jack Duncan said Brown was a good commissioner and mayor in the past.

“He’ll bring a lot of good things back to the commission,” Duncan said. “I’m very excited about him making that decision.”

Brown said he is concerned with losing commissioners with history in the town to term limits in March 2017. Commissioners reaching term limits include Duncan, Younger and Jack Daly.

Dissension on the commission is another concern, he said.

“I still feel like I can help,” Brown said. “The commission

Brown, 70, is well-known in Longboat Key politics, having served in various capacities since 2002. The retired architect from Virginia was first appointed to the Community Center Advisory Committee, and then the Planning and Zoning Board before he ran unopposed for the Longboat Key Commission in 2009. He became mayor in 2011.

Brown stepped down from the Longboat Key Town Commission on March 16, 2015, after serving six years, including four as mayor.

Colony deal: No sure bet

For Unicorp and Colony Beach & Tennis Resort unit owners to close on the proposed sale, Unicorp must clear high hurdles: the town, Colony neighbors and LBK voters.

G

et ready. There will be a lot in the news over the next few weeks about the future of the Colony. The long-suffering unit owners must make a decision before the end of the year whether to accept a purchase and sale agreement from Orlando-based Unicorp Acquisitions LLC. Let’s lay out some of the details of most interest to Longboat Key residents:

UNICORP’S PROPOSAL

n A new five-star hotel; n No fewer than 150, but no more

than 200 hotel rooms; n Related amenities, including restaurants and bars, both inside the primary hotel structure and freestanding on the grounds of the resort property; n Ballrooms, function rooms, health club, outdoor sports facilities and pools; n No fewer than 100 but no more than 200 residential units; n No fewer than 25, but no more than 60 residential units to be used for tourist units.

SUMMARY

n Minimum version: 150 hotel

rooms; 100 (new) residential units, with a minimum of 25 residential units serving as time-share, tourism units. Total: 250 units. n Maximum version: 200 hotel rooms; 200 (new) residential units, with a maximum of 60 residential units serving as time-share, tourism units. Total: 400 units.

WHAT FORMERLY EXISTED

n 237 tourism units n Restaurant, spa, meetings rooms,

banquet hall, delicatessen, clothing store, tennis pro shop, pool, bar, tennis courts.

CURRENT ZONING

Tourism use, six units per acre, although grandfathered for the existing 237.

Suffice it to say, if you’re an owner of one or more units at the shuttered Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, you would be wise to invest sufficient time to study and have explained virtually every detail of the 84-page purchase, sale and development agreement that Unicorp Acquisitions LLC has submitted to the Colony Beach & Tennis Club Association.

It’s complicated. Perhaps the biggest complications are not the details of proposed sale agreement between Unicorp and the Colony unit owners, but rather the thresholds that must be crossed with the town, Longboat voters and the Colony’s neighbors.

How will they respond to Unicorp’s proposals? Unicorp — and the Colony unit owners — will need the blessing of all three.

Take the matter of the town: The proposed contract states that, to close, Unicorp shall have received final town approval of: n The zoning entitlements n The development plan n Building permits That may not sound like much, but if you were here when the Longboat Key Club and Resort attempted to obtain all of those approvals for its redevelopment and expansion — mind you, a $400 million project — you remember the difficulties.

And keep in mind that as of today, Unicorp has not shown any renderings of its proposed five-star hotel.

Nor has it indicated whether its plan will include high-rises or midrises. It is not likely the new Colony will re-

semble the old Colony, with its many two-story bungalows.

You can be sure the Colony’s neighbors, Aquarius Club and Tencon, will have much to say, just as the Islandside Property Owners Coalition became the Key Club’s most vocal and stiffest opposition.

And that brings us to Longboat Key’s voters in general. Because Unicorp is proposing to construct new residential units, it will be required to obtain voter approval.

Back in the early 1980s, the Key’s voters approved a charter amendment requiring a public vote whenever anyone proposes to increase the town’s residential density.

You saw what happened to Flori-

days on the north end of the Key in the most recent election.

Unicorp’s plan is markedly different, to be sure. It wants more units on a property that for nearly 50 years has served tourism uses.

But you also know the mood of Longboat Key residents these days.

They abhor the idea of anything that will contribute to increased traffic congestion.

What everyone — Colony unit owners, town officials and Longboat residents — is anxious to know is Unicorp’s final proposed plan: the minimum of 250 units or the maximum of 400?

This is far from a done deal.

n 2008, John Redgrave sat next to me on the Planning and Zoning Board. John had served as a commissioner, vice mayor and mayor of Longboat Key, but for me he was a friend and a lifeline as I dealt with my husband’s diagnosis of lung cancer in November of that year. He was also one of the early members of my church, All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church. During the year that my husband, Bob, battled for his life and after his death, John provided friendship and a friendly face when I entered Town Hall or was sitting alone in church. In his quiet way, he shared his journey through grief with me after the loss of his lovely wife, Nancy, and gave me hope that the pain would subside.

John was a true gentleman. A gentleman who quietly did great things for our community.

He served as junior warden at All Angels (a title in the Episcopal Church for the vice chairman of the vestry) twice. The first time, he oversaw construction of the sanctuary at All Angels — a significant and important project that seemed like an impossible dream to many members of the parish. John was on-site regularly, overseeing every detail of construction. In less than one year, the new sanctuary was completed. In his second term as junior warden, he continued to oversee management of the building and grounds, working tirelessly and with little fanfare.

John was a nationally ranked tennis player well into his 80s.

He joined Dick Schlorf, John Mrachek and others to realize the dream of a public tennis center on Longboat. He championed the cause as a member of the Town Commission and quietly put his own funds toward the initial project. When the Tennis Center’s new building was constructed in 2009, the Redgrave

Many people have moved to Longboat Key because of our wonderful public tennis center.

I wish more of them could have known John.

John’s great joy in his life was his family. He was so proud when his granddaughter was married last spring at the Ringling Museum and thrilled to have his entire family gathered for that special event. Despite being scattered around the U.S., they were here often to visit with John. He was so proud of all of them and always had a story to share about his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When John became ill, his ability to speak was slowly taken from him, but he never failed to light up when friends and family visited. His mind was as quick as always. We just could not have him share his wit and wisdom as easily.

John was a great friend — a true gentleman. I know he is happily reunited with his lovely wife, Nancy, who died in 2007 after 57 years of marriage.

We were lucky to have them in our lives!

LOST, NOT FOUND 4:03 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway Missing property: A California man reported his Cartier black leather wallet, driver’s license, $200, five credit cards, Costco card and insurance card were lost somewhere between Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the CVS on Longboat Key.

NO INJURY 6:11 p.m. — 200 block of Longboat Club Road Hit-and-Run Traffic Accident: The owner of a gray 2015 Sienne passenger car from Collinsville, Miss., reported a hit-and-run driver struck the rear of his vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

SEPT. 8

INTERVENTION 9:06 a.m. — 1600 block of GMD Residential Burglary: A 35-year-old Sarasota man was arrested and charged with burglary to a dwelling and the former restaurant at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort after he and his father argued over his drug habit.

His 65-year-old father filed a missing persons report the day before he found his son at a renovated beachside unit where power had been restored. A window had been broken out of the west side of the unit, and some items were taken.

Items boxed up and placed near the door made police suspect the man was taking them with him, too, according to the report.

The restaurant also had been broken into, and a stolen bottle of wine was found partially consumed in the burglarized unit, according to the report.

The property manager said the association of unit owners wants the case prosecuted. The suspect was taken to Sarasota County jail.

CROSSING THE LINES 11:18 p.m. — 7300 block of GMD Disturbance: An angler on

Longboat Pass Bridge reported a fisherman on a boat threatened to shoot him after their lines tangled while he was reeling in a catch. The victim said he did not see a firearm, nor could he ID the suspect or his boat because it was so dark on the water.

Mote meets $50M goal The campaign will be a driving force behind Mote’s 2020 vision and strategy.

ast year, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium announced a bold goal at its annual black-tie fundraiser, Oceanic Evening: Raise $50 million to expand the lab’s mission and impact through the Oceans of Opportunity campaign.

Mote announced Monday that it surpassed its $50 million goal late this summer.

The campaign was the first of its kind for Mote and will be a driving force behind Mote’s 2020

Vision and Strategic Plan.

“It’s exhilarating, it’s humbling, it’s exciting,” said Mote President and CEO Michael Crosby. “But I think the humbling piece is the biggest piece because when you think about it, to be able to secure the commitment from the community of such an enormous amount of support, it really does let you know just how important this community feels Mote is to the culture, to the way of life in this community and to how important the community feels the environment here is.”

needed to achieve Mote’s 2020 vision. The vision has four main priorities: expanding Mote’s global marine research program, drawing and retaining top marine scientists, using Mote’s science to impact conservation and sustainable use of the ocean, and giving back to the community in terms of service.

The only bricks and mortar piece of the campaign is the new facility being built on Mote’s Florida Keys property. However, in the distant future, Mote will be looking for an additional mainland campus that can be more accessible to more of the Sarasota community, Crosby said.

“As we grow our research enterprise, as we grow our education and outreach enterprise, we will need a new campus, an additional campus, and that is part of what the future will hold for us, and this campus here on City Island is something that is going to evolve over the next years,” Crosby said.

Raising $50 million wasn’t the only goal of the campaign.

Another aim was to raise awareness of Mote as more than just a fun place to spend an afternoon.

Campaign Chairman Bob Essner said when people think of Mote, they think of its aquarium and its shark tanks and “touch me” stuff. Essner said they didn’t just ask for money, they told people to come look at the facility, tour the laboratories and meet the scientists.

“Not asking them for money, just saying, ‘Come see,’ with the belief, and I think it was a correct belief, that a lot of people would then find something that was of interest to them,” Essner said.

More than 23,000 people contributed to the campaign. Of those, 260 gifts were for $25,000 or more, 80 gifts were $100,000 or more, and 11 were more than $1 million. Donations came from every U.S. state.

“The research that Mote does needs to be funded by grants or philanthropy,” said G. Lowe Morrison, chairman of Mote’s board of trustees. “There is no giant pot of money at Mote that pays for research. All the research we do, our researchers apply for grants,

and this percentage that comes from state and federal dollars has been dropping significantly, so more of that is from philanthropy and other dollars.”

Crosby points to the fact that 50% of donors were new donors as a sign of the campaign’s success.

“I had kids coming into my office literally giving me Ziploc baggies full of change and dollar bills that they were fundraising because they were passionate about the mission of Mote,” Crosby said.

Crosby is confident the $50 million will allow Mote to reach all of its goals, in part because he sat down with a pencil and piece of paper and calculated what each goal would take. He said when you look at the transitive research, such as the new techniques for coral reef restoration, or the marine immunology and marine microbiology programs that are developing potential therapies for 15 different types of cancer, the majority of the funding is philanthropic.

“This is what we have been about since our creation 61 years ago,” Crosby said. “It is enabling us to have the strength with which we can pursue new ideas, new initiatives that will have very positive impact to our oceans and to our communities.”

As one of the core priorities of the 2020 vision, the community has already been receiving some of the benefits of the campaign.

Mote’s community engagement coordinator, Elaina Todd, works to form partnerships with Sarasota organizations that serve underrepresented populations in science to introduce them to Mote’s research and marine science concepts. Since she started in 2014, the number of partnerships has gone from two to 17.

“I think showing that we as an organization can reach this goal is only going to encourage future and continued support,” Todd said.

‘More Travel, Less Hate’ The hunt for new clients leads a travel entrepreneur to ask: What else can she do for her customers?

Admiral Travel International founder Malaka Hilton was recently name to Travel + Leisure’s 15th annual A List for her role as an Egypt trip specialist — her 14th straight year on the list.

But the honor has somewhat of a bittersweet hue, given the recent drop in travel to Egypt. She says she’s gone from booking hundreds of trips there a year to now three or four.

The perception and the actual reality of danger in Egypt and the Middle East, says Hilton, has caused the slowdown. “It breaks my heart because I love Egypt,” she says. “But I understand people’s concerns.”

Malaka Hilton and her team of global travel gurus at Admiral Travel International are so good at what they do they sometimes talk themselves out of more business.

The Sarasota-based agency specializes in creating high-end unique trips, from Iceland to South Africa, that center around one key factor: the experience.

It’s a millennial-fueled trend in the travel industry — trips that are all about creating a GoPro experience suitable for instant social media updates. Hilton says Admiral has been doing it that way for years, initially to survive.

“We’ve always had a vision that travel should be something that’s experiential,” Hilton says. “We knew to grow our business we had to provide something people can’t Google.”

Admiral, with seven employees and 10 trip agents who work on a contract basis, has thrived in that environment. Revenues rose nearly 10% in 2015 over 2014, from $11 million to $12 million, strong growth in an industry where traditional travel agencies are relics.

But Hilton, who runs the firm with her husband, Ryan, says the growth, and the success in booking high-end trips, has exposed

Admiral to a weakness: It does little or no work with existing clients on the easier, less exotic trips they take to places in the U.S. That can be anything from Disney World to California for a week to national parks tours. Hilton says Admiral, through affiliations and partnerships with Virtuoso Reserve and other travel networks, can get clients perks and upgrades they can’t get on their own, even for basic trips.

“We need to get the message out there that we can do a lot more and book everything for our clients,” says Hilton. “That’s a challenge we are really focusing on and what we have to do better at articulating.”

The firm is diligent about maintaining a high-end approach. It charges a $500 fee, good toward the trip, in the early stages of working with a client to eliminate price shoppers and tire kickers. The firm’s travel personnel include three African safari specialists, two in marketing and a private client group that works with high-net-worth travelers.

Another key to the firm’s success has been to create the exclusive experience-based journeys.

This past April, for example, Admiral organized a trip with 22 people to Havana with area chef and restaurateur Tommy Klauber and his wife, Jaymie.

Admiral Travel will celebrate 20 years in business next year. The Hiltons have run the firm together — she’s an award-winning Egypt expert, and he’s an authority on

Travel is something Malaka Hilton, 45, did for years prior to Admiral. The daughter of an Egyptian-born doctor who ran medical symposiums worldwide, Hilton went to Egypt by the time she was 4 and to Japan and Moscow before she turned 12. Hilton’s

passion for world travel remains the driving force today to both grow Admiral and help people become more familiar with other cultures.

“If we can do more travel,” Hilton says, “we can have less hate.”

Christ Church cooks up fish dinner

S

ince 2011, Mark Huber and George Rauch have been providing fish for Christ Church of Longboat Key, Presbyterian’s annual fish fries.

On Sept. 16, the duo came through once more and provided enough fish for 50 Christ Church members to gather and have a fish dinner. Not only did they catch the fish, they cooked it, too, with the help of Sally Rauch and Lutie Uihlein.

Following their fish dinner, members enjoyed a chocolate cake from Publix.

Huber and Rauch spend about three months taking different trips out on the Sarasota Bay to catch enough trout to feed the members who attend.

The number of trips they take depends on if the fish are biting and how big the fish are.

“When these guys are the mood to go fishing, we end up having a fish fry,” Vivian Chester said.

Dora Coates, 91, of Rochester, N.Y., died Sept. 19.

She was born in Paris and immigrated to the United States at age 5 with her parents, Max and Johanna Schloss.

The family settled in New York, where Henrietta attended The High School of Music and Art and Barnard College and Columbia University. She was fluent in three languages and enjoyed art, history, literature, food and performance.

Together, Mrs. Barkey and her husband, Allen, ran Barkey Importing Co., which was well-respected in the food industry. The couple had two sons, Jonathan and David, whom they raised in Rochester, N.Y. Eventually, the couple moved to Longboat Key. Mrs. Barkey is remembered as caring, creative, energetic, outgoing and eternally youthful.

Following her husband’s death in 2011, she remained active in all aspects of life physically, socially and civically. She traveled to Europe, Cuba and Africa. Her last overseas trip was in 2015 to the United Kingdom, where she revisited her youth and spent time with family.

Mrs. Barkey was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by sons, Jonathan and David; daughterin-law, Lauren; granddaughters, Cara and Chloe; and brother Stanley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Emily’s List, 1800 M St. N.W., Suite 375N, Washington, D.C. 20036, or the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 2600 Network Blvd., Suite 300, Frisco, TX 75034.

She was born in Dansville, N.Y., on Feb. 25, 1925, to the late Walter and Mae McTarnaghan.

She was a graduate of Dansville High School and then attended Geneseo Teachers College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. In 1950 she married William J. Coates.

Dora taught in the Rochester area before she began raising her family. Later, she taught eighth grade at Dansville Junior High School.

Following Williams’ death, Dora moved to the Lakeville Estates in New York where she enjoyed playing card games.

Since 1998, Dora has spent her winters in the Longboat Key area and at Manasota Beach Gardens.

Dora was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; brother, Donald McTarnaghan; brother-in-law Peter Coates, sister-in-law Lucille Sharrow; daughter-in-law Kandice Coates.

She is survived by sons Edward, Martin and Matthew; daughters Deborah Coates and Susan Kell; 11 grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Lois McTarnaghan and Dr. Helen Smith.

ith the recent bout of red tide affecting Sarasota Bay, it was fitting that this year’s Scallopalooza: It’s Clamtastic! benefited more than scallop restoration efforts.

The sixth annual Sarasota Bay Watch fundraiser took place Sept. 24 at the Sarasota Yacht Club. It is the group’s only fundraiser of the year.

Sarasota Bay Watch President Larry Stults said the group would be expanding its restoration efforts to southern hardshell clams, a species that is resistant to red tide and whose growth would reduce red tide blooms in the bay. The expansion isn’t in response to this year’s bout of red tide, but the timing is working in the group’s favor.

arker Royalty, 3, was at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium to visit the fish and other sea animals, but he liked what was in the parking lot better — a red 2016 Tesla Model X. The electric vehicle was on display earlier this month during Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s fifth annual Electrify the Island event.

Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer announced that the county proclaimed Sept. 10-18 National Drive Electric Week.

Electrify the Island serves as a kickoff for Drive Electric Week. Throughout the day, visitors to the aquarium and electric car fanatics could stop outside the aquarium to look at various electric cars. Booths were set up by local businesses focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency to educate attendees. Local electric vehicle owners were also present and answered questions from attendees.

Rich Garrett, who owns a 2014 Tesla P85D, said the city of Sarasota is electric vehiclefriendly and encourages more people to explore the environmentally friendly form of transportation.

ore than 70 members of Bird Key Yacht Club dined for the Tuscan Farm-to-Table dinner Saturday evening.

Bird Key Yacht Club member Dee Kropf picked out her homemade macaroni jewelry with the dinner theme in mind Saturday evening.

“Where else am I going to wear my pasta earrings?”

Kropf said. “I’m hoping there’s pasta or else I’m going to have to eat these

earrings.”

Executive chef Brent Williams made sure pasta was on the menu for the evening. The entree was pappardelle pasta served with veal, mushroom ragout and broccoli rabe finished with pickled grape tomatoes.

Williams ended the evening on a sweet note with strawberries in a 25-year-aged balsamic served with coffee-flavored ice cream and a triple chocolate biscotti.

Rosalie Goldberg, trustee, and Alan Bandler, of Sarasota, sold Unit 407 at 1241 Gulf of Mexico Drive to Orlando Cicilioni Jr., trustee, of Longboat Key, for $1,399,000. Built in 1996, it has three bedrooms, four baths and 2,965 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $1.35 million in 2004.
