Maison Blanche was recently named to OpenTable’s 100 Best Restaurants for Foodies in America 2016 list. The list reflects more than 5 million reviews from verified users of the app. “I try to give my best every day and try to improve everything every day,” chef/ owner Jose Martinez said.

Ron Johnson: A celebration of life A celebration of Ron Johnson’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 2, in the Keating Education Center of Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway. Johnson was a former Longboat Key mayor and an avid volunteer at Mote.

n Sept. 16, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium staff released Tucker B., back into the gulf off Lido Beach after four months of rehabilitation. Lynne Byrd, Mote’s rehabilitation and medical care coordinator, said Tucker B. showed few signs of life when he stranded in May near Boca Grande. Byrd described Tucker B. as a laid-back patient. “He always went on his own pace, and he even took his time today before swimming freely in the water,” she said.
Observers win press awards Nine newspapers in the Observer Media Group garnered 81 total awards at the 2015 Florida Press Association Better Weekly Newspaper contest Sept. 16 The Longboat Observer staff won first place for overall graphic design and for the special issue category for its Longboat Key 60th Anniversary section. Managing Editor Robin Hartill won best obituary for her story on the life of Edith Barr Dunn, and Editorial Designer Meghan Sasser won the informational graphic category.
