Dog day of summer Within the dog days of summer there is a bright spot — the Dog Day of summer.

National Dog Day was Aug. 26, and the town of Longboat Key took the opportunity to show off a few of their employees’ furry friends.

It doesn’t take much for a proud pet parent to parade their pooch’s pictures, so the town’s Twitter had plenty to show off. Manatee County leaders have agreed to extend red tide relief services to the length of Longboat Key, even the Sarasota County portion of the island.

A right-of-access agreement signed Aug. 12 allows Manatee County crews to range anywhere on the beach and into publicly maintained canals, if needed.

The agreement could last as late as Nov. 1, depending on how long the bloom persists, though conditions have improved of late.

Manatee County leaders will work with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to ensure the county would be reimbursed for work in Sarasota County.

There is no cost to the town.

Town Manager Tom Harmer said the single-county approach would help deliver a consistent level of service.

Sarasota County commissioners this week agreed to terms with state officials for about $3.5 million in red tide relief, a portion of which would be directed toward Longboat Key. “So we just thought it was much more efficient if Manatee (County) would just take on the

entire island, which they did,” Harmer said.

Additionally, Manatee County is providing the town drone footage, beach raking and a trash bin for public disposal of dead fish.

“Everything they’re doing on the Manatee County side, they’re now offering on the Sarasota (County) side,” Harmer said.

“Now, fortunately, over the past week, the red tide conditions have lessened somewhat.”

Harmer said town staff does a daily examination of the beach and bay shoreline, but the drone footage provides a better perspective.

“Having the drone fly the area, you can really see the conditions right there at the shoreline, but also near shore and get a better sense of how much red tide may be in the area,” Harmer said.

The trash bin is located at the Atlas Beach Access at 4795 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Initially, the town had placed it at the Linley Street boat ramp but moved to preserve parking access.

Harmer said Manatee County crews would also provide help assessing the town’s canals and cleanup of dead fish when it’s necessary. He said Manatee County has also ordered a few boats specifically to help mitigate red tide. They need for such a sweep of bayside canals has not yet been necessary.

Longboat Key’s policy requires three to four tide cycles and a moderate level of dead fish accumulation before the town initiates a cleanup of a specific area.

Sarasota County provided the town a list of potentially eligible costs, which includes mechanical beach raking, equipment rental, landfill fees, communications and contracted vendors. Harmer said it could also include overtime pay for town employees focused on red tide recovery.

In a report to the town following the 2018-19 outbreak of red tide, town officials reported spending $59,517 on in-house beach and canal cleanup. The town gathered a total of 186,660 pounds of dead sea life for disposal in 1,058 staff hours.

The final building of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort was demolished in November 2018, and since then, advances have been limited to architectural drawing boards, courtrooms and title company closing rooms. But before concrete can pour, the town will have its say. Even so, Unicorp is planning a formal, invitation-only groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 25, less than a week after the Town Commission could grant final OKs. Here’s what’s ahead in September and October:

TOWN APPROVAL NEEDED

The Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board has scheduled a special meeting for 9:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17 to hear the St. Regis application in dealing with several changes to what has already been approved.

The board will hear and make a recommendation to town commissioners.

The Town Commission is set to hold two quasi-judicial public hearings for the development Oct. 6 and 20. If approvals are granted, building permits would follow.

WHAT CHANGED?

Specifically, Unicorp plans to reduce the number of residential units from 78 to 69. Also, two of the 69 condominium units would be available for occupancy for less than 30 consecutive calendar days or one calendar month, whichever is less.

The development still plans 166 hotel rooms.

Unicorp CEO Chuck Whittall said he didn’t realize changes were necessary until designers were into the planning process.

“Unfortunately, the town of Longboat Key makes you do your entire site plan completely before you can get an approval, so we had to do all of that,” Whittall said. “It’s kind of the cart before the horse, and once we got into the design, we realized we couldn’t fit that many units on the property, building the quality project we wanted to, so that’s why we scaled it back.”

Unicorp’s previous plans proposed 30 of the 69 residential units be authorized for use as either a residential unit or a tourism unit at the discretion of the individual owner, similar to the ownership arrangement Colony owners operated under.

“We ended up buying out all of the Colony unit owners, but eight of them, I believe, so we didn’t need as many of them to be available for rent,” Whittall said. “We agreed as part of our buyout that we would provide them essentially what they used to have.”

Unicorp is also proposing some changes to the height around elevator shafts on the roof and some levels of publicspace occupancy.

The proposed changes call for a reduction in the number of parking spaces at the St. Regis site from 475 spaces to the town-required minimum of 405 spaces. Some 342 parking spaces will be underneath the building, and 63 will be outside.

Whittall was not concerned with the town’s new rules for restaurant parking. As of June 2020, the town requires one parking space for every 150 square feet of floor area.

“We have plenty of parking,” Whittall said. “That was not an issue for us.”

Like a parent choosing between a favorite child, CEO Chuck Whittall struggled to pick which was more special.

“It’s going to be one of the most special, if not the most special (project I’ve worked on),” Whittall said.

“To build a five-star luxury on the Gulf of Mexico, it’s going to be a legacy type of development.”

Michael Saunders & Co.’s Simon Bacon credited the Unicorp team for making the St. Regis site a reality.

“It’s so difficult to compile a piece of land like this, but then to be able to match it with the St. Regis and its services and the resort, I hate to use the word, but it’s really a unicorn,” Bacon said.

Whittall said Unicorp believes the value of the remaining resi-

dences will increase once construction starts.

Michael Saunders & Co. is handling the sales of the St. Regis’ residential units. Simon Bacon, the company’s executive director of developments, said condo buyers have signed purchase agreements dictating the price they are paying, provided initial deposits and will pay further deposits as construction reaches benchmarks.

“At this exact moment in time, our role is really secondary and is to provide whatever support we can to Unicorp as they go through this final approval process,” Bacon said. “Our sales team is working really diligently to continue to communicate with the purchasers and what is going on so that they are kept fully abreast.”

St. Regis buyers are not responsible for paying property taxes until they officially close on the condos, Bacon said.

Prices for residential units started at $2 million. Once the project is completed, the site could add about $1.5 million in taxes to the town’s budget.

1620 GMD NO LONGER

The St. Regis site will get five new addresses, according to Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons.

The addresses will be 1561, 1581 and 1591 Gulf of Mexico Drive for the three proposed residential buildings.

The amenity building will have

an address of 1571 Gulf of Mexico Drive, and the hotel will have an address of 1601 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The address of the current site is 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive. However, odd-numbered dressed are usually west of GMD, and even-numbered addressed are on the east side of the street.

YEARS IN THE MAKING

The 17.6-acre piece of land has sat vacant since November 2018 when crews demolished the last building of the former Colony site.

In January 2020, legal proceedings finished up to terminate the condominium association of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

“I thought it was going to take us two years to get through the legal mess, the legal challenges,” Whittall said. “It took us eight years to get through.”

Whittall acknowledged how people created many great memories at the former Colony site.

“We see the same thing happening again,” Whittall said. “It’s just moving forward in time. It’s a newer development, but we’re still seeing the same type of clientele that used to attend will be going there.

“I’m sure we’ll have presidents staying there and celebrities and locals and people taking their kids, and I think the same type of people who used to go there will go there again.”

Red tide study hits two-year mark Researchers are looking into the effects of red tide on human health.

A Sarasota nonprofit has worked for the past two years to determine what kind of effects red tide has on human health.

Roskamp Institute Executive Director Dr. Michael Mullan explained that progress has been made and that he hopes the project he oversees with Dr. Laila Abdullah can continue.

“There can be big differences in the way people respond to red tide,” Mullan said. “Not everybody responds the same. Some people don’t seem to have much effect from it at all, and others seem to get quite severe effects.”

More than 250 people have participated in the study since its launch in June 2019. He said researchers examine data from volunteers’ blood and urine samples.

“We’re trying to understand (the effects) based on what we’re seeing in the blood,” Mullan said.

“One of the interesting things that we’re seeing in the blood is antibody levels to the toxin, which means that the toxin has somehow gotten into the body, and the body has responded.”

Longboat Key resident Gary Coffin said he’s seen the area deal with red tide issues since moving to the island in 2002.

an episode of this, and it’s really annoying,” Coffin said. “Being a person with allergies already, (the red tide) certainly didn’t help me at all.

“So I figured, well, I’ll just go down and volunteer and see what we can do (and) offer to help.”

This year marked Coffin’s second time participating in the study. He said the process takes about 15 minutes for researchers to collect samples when red tide blooms in local waters.

“This is the first time I’ve had to go back because we’ve had no episodes here of it,” Coffin said.

The Roskamp Institute is a biomedical research organization focusing on neurological illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.

red tide aerosols seem to trigger an antibody response.

“Even when people haven’t been anywhere near a red tide for months, some of them still have very high levels of antibody in their blood, and others have a low level,” he said.

Mullan said if people do have a negative reaction, doctors want to learn whether it’s related to red tide or something else.

“For instance, is it a secondary effect of their respiratory problems?” Mullan said. “That’s one of the things that’s come up

is, are the people that do have neurological problems, is it just a consequence of the respiratory problems they have? Or is there a group that have separate neurological problems that don’t have anything to do with preexisting asthma or other conditions?”

Mullan said several questions have emerged from the study that haven’t been answered: n How much of the red tide toxins actually get into people’s bodies? n How much of it triggers symptoms?

“I think the very interesting point here is that there are a lot of potential public health questions that simply need to be answered,” Mullan said.

The first part of the Roskamp Institute’s project will finish next year.

Mullan hopes to extend the study to see if there any longterm effects of repeated exposure.

He hopes to have publicly available data in the next six to months after receiving a peer review.

Roskamp Institute is looking for people who live inland to participate in the study (see box, left). Researchers break volunteers into three groups: n 0-1 miles from a waterway; n 1-3 miles from a waterway; and n 3-plus miles from a waterway.

A marina just down the road from Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is one of three test sites for experimental technology to control red tide blooms.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution senior scientist Don Anderson has been researching clay and its effects on red tide for 15 years and recently got the go-ahead to test his ideas at three Tampa Bay-area sites: n The Sarasota Outboard Club next to Mote Marine Laboratory; n Eckerd College; and n Gasparilla Island.

“Basically, we found a clay that we thought was absolutely perfect that would work down there,” he said.

Woods Hole is teaming up with Mote, the University of Central Florida, the University of South Florida and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission after receiving state approval.

Anderson said a polymer-

clay slurry is sprayed over an area with active red tide. The clay is positively charged, and red tide cells are negatively charged.

“It makes a very strong reaction, but maybe more importantly, the polymer also produces these chains of polymer that stretch from particle to particle, and it makes like a net,” Anderson said. “That net as it’s heavy starts falling through the water and acting like a filter, like a sieve.”

The slurry solution then pulls the red tide cells to the bottom, where they eventually dissipate.

Anderson hopes to expand testing sites with additional permits.

“You can see the problem,” Anderson said. “We have to have a red tide come to an area that is suitable for us to work in, and then we can study it.

And if it comes to some other area where we don’t have a permit, we can’t do a thing.”

Longboat Key leaders are working with state regulators on a series of planned inspections of the town’s sewage link to the mainland following the June 2020 pipeline break and spill of millions of gallons of effluent.

The town is waiting for feedback from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on the inspection plans and will proceed with the 10-month project once given the go-ahead.

The town is proposing a twostep inspection, beginning with a remote-controlled device that’s inserted into the sewage flow on the Longboat Key side and examines the pipeline on its voyage to the Manatee County treatment plant. Following the examination, data will be compared to a similar inspection done in 2016.

“As it’s traversing the pipeline, it identifies areas where they may be gas pockets or other anomalies,” Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said, adding that accumulations of potentially corrosive hydrogen sulfide would be cause for further study.

“It’s important just to note if it’s occurring,” Brownman said.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean the pipe is corroding in that location.”

The pipeline will also be inspected for external corrosion.

Beyond that, divers could be employed to visually inspect or perform other methods of inspection.

“The divers (would) go down and do a physical observation of the exterior walls of the pipe,” Brownman said. “They will take pictures, but the real key element that the divers will provide is they will do something called ultrasonic thickness testing.”

The town plans to reassess the pipe every three to five years.

Brownman said the cost of this portion of the reassessment is $182,087, which has been budgeted.

In July, the state approved a package of environmental projects to comply with a consent order connected with the spill.

The projects include installing an upgraded flow meter to better compare flow from one end of the pipeline to the other, installing three preeminent bypass pumps at lift stations in the wastewater collection system and replacing an existing 2006 reserve generator at Master Lift Station D. Although the state rejected Longboat Key’s plan for a wetwell lining project as part of the consent order, the town still decided to reline the interior wet well for Master Lift Station D located at 521 Gulf Bay Road.

Longboat Key is also in the process of advancing a redundant pipeline project, which has an estimated cost of $21.8 million. The town is budgeting for the redundant pipeline project in fiscal year 2024. It will ultimately replace the existing pipeline, which was built in 1973.

Even though a town-hired consultant found that an estimated 14.7 million gallons spilled from June 17-30, 2020, about 400 feet from the shores of Sarasota Bay, Brownman said Longboat Key did not require an immediate pipeline replacement.

County approves changes for Mote aquarium File photo

Project moves ahead with series of votes, but site plan approval and building permits still pending.

The Sarasota County Commission voted unanimously in favor of a series of changes that will permit an aquarium to be built on land in Nathan Benderson Park, clearing a regulatory hurdle for Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s planned construction of a new facility on the site.

Last week, the commission approved amendments to its comprehensive plan and unified development code that attempt to outline the location and character of Mote’s aquarium. Mote intends to build a four-story, 110,000-square-foot facility called Mote Science Education Aquarium on land south of The Mall at University Town Center.

The meeting marked the latest in a series of approvals county officials have granted to the project, a concept the commission has spoken effusively about since Mote announced plans for the aquarium in 2018. The county has set aside 11 acres of county property and agreed to commit $20 million in tourist tax funding toward the project.

Mote has not yet secured site plan approval or a building permit for the aquarium, and county staff said there are not any applications for the project under consideration. The county has not finalized its funding commitment toward Mote, as officials conditioned their support on the organization raising the balance of its fundraising goal first.

As of summer 2020, Mote said it had secured $75 million in commitments toward a $130 million goal. In May, aquarium officials declined to provide an up-to-date fundraising total. Mote hopes to wrap up preliminary site work by the end of the year, too, beginning construction in 2022 and completing the project two years later.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium broke ground on its Nathan Benderson Park project last year, but there are still outstanding procedural steps that must be taken before construction can begin.

wo weeks ago, we published on this page our urging to readers to read a long magazine article on the use of the drug ivermectin to treat COVID-19 — “The Drug That Cracked COVID.” Written by longtime journalist Michael Capuzzo for his and his wife Teresa’s Pennsylvania magazine, Mountain Home, the article chronicled the struggles of renowned academic medical researchers and physicians Drs. Pierre Kory and Paul Malik and others to convince public health agencies in the U.S. and around the world of the efficacy of ivermectin in the treatment of COVID-19 and that this FDAapproved, generic drug should be authorized for doctors to prescribe.

As expected, we received numerous letters and emails.

Some applauded us for bringing the story to light and told us how the drug had saved people they knew.

Others stridently chastised us, accusing us of promoting the use of the drug and promoting it over vaccines. We were doing neither.

Our intent was to expose our readers to a story about a drug that has gone through extensive clinical trials, proven to be effective against COVID-19 and yet the medical establishment and national media have dismissed it as quackery.

As fair-minded journalists would, we felt it worthy to expose our readers to another side of this larger story.

What’s more, knowing we would receive negative responses, this week we are publishing letters and emails of those who opposed what we did, along with Kory’s responses to readers’ concerns and criticisms.

In addition, we are publishing one letter (of several we received) in support of our publishing Capuzzo’s story.

Your article pushing ivermictin as a “cure” or “preventive” or whatever for COVID was an abomination.

There has been a large increase in calls to the Poison Control Line from people taking that compound. It is not approved and has not been shown to be effective against viruses, in particular against COVID-19 or its variants.

You did a disservice to the community for writing that drivel, which will hurt more than help. Vaccines should be promoted as the only proven way to stop this pandemic.

I hope that soon you will publish an article retracting your views on ivermectin and set the record straight.

Then compare that evidence to the average amount of evidence relied upon to formulate the treatment guidelines of the Infectious Disease Society of America: In a 2010 review of 65 of its most recent guidelines, the IDSA found that 50% of guideline recommendations were made without any trials evidence in support and were termed “expert opinion only.”

Another 31% of guideline recommendations were based solely on observational studies, while only 16% of all recommendations were based on at least one randomized controlled trial.

In other words, the number of legitimate clinical trials for ivermectin have been far superior to those for the IDSA’s treatment guidelines.

Furthermore, ivermectin was approved for the treatment of scabies by the World Health Organization based only on 10 randomized controlled trials, including 852 patients. Despite the fact that these trials found ivermectin inferior to the cream it was being tested against, it still won approval due to its low cost and ease of administration.

We cannot recall the last pandemic of scabies that cratered health care systems and societies across the world. Yet the WHO

was able to arrive at such a bold recommendation without the pressure of a pandemic, given it was based on such a seemingly small evidence base.

We also emphasize that the NIH Guidelines for COVID-19 have multiple strength levels of recommendation available to them, from weak/“consider” to making use near mandatory. The public should demand from the IDSA and NIH credible explanations for this monstrous anomaly of not arriving at even a weak recommendation for ivermectin, one of the safest, inexpensive and widely available medicines known to man.

What you are witnessing is just the most absurd example of a decadeslong war on repurposed (aka “non-profitable”) medicines.

Finally, no credible physician or journalist recommends that people self-prescribe with veterinary forms of ivermectin.

Experts, such as the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance, have been working tirelessly for months to persuade the public health agencies to provide more specific guidance to physicians on using ivermectin to treat patients with COVID-19.

The increasing calls to poison control centers are a direct result of their failure to provide such guidance and education to U.S. citizens.

Mask wars: Coercion only brings destruction This is ridiculous — this political war over masks in schools.

It is yet another example that accentuates why state-controlled education is a fallacy and delusion and should be abolished.

Yep, here we go again, you say.

Another extreme, wackadoo idea.

But au contraire.

This fight or war over masks on school children brings into vivid focus the incongruity that has existed with education from the day it became the domain of the state.

It has always been thus: strife and tension between the Legislature, which controls the

money, curricula and policies, and the local school districts, school boards and educators.

They are always at odds.

We recall former state Sen. Nancy Detert when she decided to give up her Senate seat. She was exhausted and exasperated at how the Legislature had changed for the worse. In particular, she noted how so many newly elected legislators would come to Tallahassee on their white horses to reform the state’s education system — despite what little they knew.

Since the beginning of the state’s present public school system in 1868, lawmakers have created a nightmarish Leviathan

of regulations. In 153 years, they have amassed 573,253 words of mandates and regulations. The Bible, which covers 4,000 years, has 783,140 words — but only 10 rules.

Meantime, back in the local districts, you could talk to any school administrator or teacher, and they chafe over the dictates and mandates coming down from Tallahassee ordering them how to do their jobs.

This arrangement epitomizes what Leonard Read, a great 20th century American philosopherentrepreneur, wrote about in his book, “Anything That’s Peaceful”: “Coercion, by its nature, is destructive.”

Coercion — the force of the government — only creates strife. It produces nothing creative.

This is what we have in the war over masks.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, both Republicans and strong believers in individual liberty, used their positions to mandate (coerce) all public schools not to impose mandatory masks for students.

decision-making.

Predictably, school boards dominated by members from the Democratic Party fought back with their own authoritarian tendencies. They voted to defy the governor’s executive orders and impose their own mask mandates. They used their positions to coerce hundreds and thousands of parents who have vocally opposed mandated masks.

More strife.

And get this: With these mask mandates, these school boards have decreed they will send home any student who does not comply.

How can that be? The Florida constitution says it is “a paramount duty of the state to make adequate provision for the education of all children.” How, then, can students without masks be denied what others wearing masks have?

If they are denied, do their parents become entitled to a refund of their school taxes?

This political war becomes even more absurd when you consider the following: Around the state, parents who want mandated masks have sued (Gov. Ron) DeSantis and the Department of Education, alleging they are violating the state constitution by not complying with this provision: “Adequate provision shall be made by law for a uniform, efficient, safe (bold italics added), secure and high quality

At the same time, other groups of parents oppose mandated masks because they contend the masks are harming their children’s physical and mental health. In other words, mandated masks are not creating a safe system of public schools.

Indeed, what constitutes “safe”?

All of this makes Read’s point and our point: Coercion will always be destructive; and a “uniform,” state-controlled education system is a destructive delusion. It cannot possibly deliver high-quality education for “all children,” all of whom are different.

We know it’s far-fetched to think Florida’s public education system would ever be abolished and replaced with market-driven schools that would serve its customers first.

But in the absence of that, the decision to mask or not to mask should not be up to governors, legislators or school boards. Parents are the guardians of their children, and government is best closest to the people. Every school should let its parents vote in a democratic process.

The man who called police said someone berated him while the man tried to dump household trash into a community trash bin. The man said he was told no one was permitted to use the trash bin and then was blocked in by the other man’s vehicle. Police found a vehicle similar to the one described and spoke to its owner, who said the community had troubles with workers dumping refuse into the bin and didn’t realize the relatively new-to-the-community man he encountered was a resident. He said once he realized the man was a resident, he left – though he disputed who had been yelling. Both men agreed to be less confrontational in the future.

An officer sent to investigate spoke to the workers who denied putting anything in the business owner’s bin, reasoning they had their own bin much closer to their work site.

Education Center at Temple Beth Israel prepares for first season The organization formerly known as the Longboat Key Education Center has made its final move.

The Education Center at Temple Beth Israel is a new organization that replaces the Longboat Key Education Center, which had to close at the end of its 2020-2021 season due to financial hardship throughout the pandemic. Temple Beth Israel opted to bring in the center’s operations rather than see it shut down and will keep it a totally secular organization. The old Longboat Key Education Center was dissolved to make way for the Education Center at Temple Beth Israel.

“This is not a relocation,” Goldfarb said. “We’re not renting space. We’re not doing any of that. I’m an employee of Temple Beth Israel and so is my staff.”

used for Shabbat dinners or 92Y showings. At capacity, it will be able to fit 150 people. Goldfarb has been able to retain about 95% of her teachers from the Education Center and said that those who weren’t returning had moved away or moved on from teaching.

The fall will be light on classes, as it usually is, with Goldfarb planning for some yoga, painting and film classes. Many of the classics will stay more or less the same, but she’s tweaking some things.

For example, she’ll focus more on chair yoga instead of more active hatha yoga. Other fitness classes will include a functional fitness and balance class and a dance

movement class taught by former Sarasota Ballet Artistic Director Robert de Warren.

“I think it’s going to be a whole lot of fun, and I can’t wait for it because it’s new,” Goldfarb said.

One of the three-part classes will be The Glory That Was Greece and will focus on the cradle of Western civilization. There will also be workshops throughout the fall and winter. One, which temple member Suzanne Schuster helped develop, will be with a panel of experts to help people combat loneliness, and another lighthearted offering will be an afternoon of origami.

“The teacher is going to teach

simple paper folding, and a lot of her instruction includes a kind of cross-cultural communication and understanding of Japanese culture,” Goldfarb said.

Winter plans are already in the works, too, with plans for a magic workshop and theatrical productions with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

“All of the wonderful things that people loved at the Longboat Key Education Center will be available at Temple Beth Israel,” Goldfarb said.

he Education Center at Temple Beth Israel is preparing for its first season, but students of the former Longboat Key Education Center can expect many of their favorite classes to return when the season starts in about two months.

“At this time last year, the brochure was already out,” program director Susan Goldfarb said.

“But there’s just been so much to do with going into Temple Beth Israel as the new organization. … We dumped a lot of things and shredded a lot of things. That took six weeks.”

Goldfarb will have a brochure done at the end of September and will start welcoming students into the new space in October.

There are more than 400 members who carried over from the Longboat Key Education Center and more than 500 TBI members get automatic membership, so it could be a busy season.

Of course, the pandemic continues to loom over plans to offer large, indoor gatherings, but with last year’s Zoom experience, the support of TBI and the big, social-distancing-friendly room available for lectures, Goldfarb is

fter more than a year of separated singing, the Temple Beth Israel choir is back. The section leaders and four members returned to the choir section on Aug. 23 under Director Ann Stephenson-Moe. The choir had not practiced together in person since March 2020, but when the singers got together, it was like no time had passed. Choir members found their seats and their places in the music quickly; the only new aspect was that now their faces stayed covered.

Stephenson-Moe led everyone through warmup exercises before diving in.

“It’s so nice to see you back where you belong,” Stephenson-Moe said to her singers.

The High Holy Days are coming up, with Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 7 and Yom Kippur on Sept.

16. The choir will sing at the now

in-person services with three practice sessions behind them, so they quickly moved into practicing their pieces for then.

“We are sitting in every other seat, and everybody’s been vaccinated, and one of the couples is married, so we are managing the best we can,” StephensonMoe said. “Once the High Holy Days are over, we will go to every other week.”

The fall choir will start Oct. 25, and Stephenson-Moe is hoping to have new members come. There are currently 10 singers at the temple, including Stephenson-Moe, and more than that would be difficult to manage, but the choir usually has 16-18 singers during high season. The only prerequisite for joining is an appreciation of singing.

TRIBUTES Paul Louis Glosser 1930-2021 Paul Louis Glosser, aged 91, passed away on Sunday August 22, 2021 in Sarasota, Florida. Paul lived a life of love, laughter, travel, adventure, and, most of all, family. Paul was an avid fisherman, golfer, NY Times crossword puzzler, red wine drinker, Jeopardy! watcher and Steeler fan.

Paul was philanthropically involved in Johnstown, Sarasota, and Jewish charities.

Paul was born in Johnstown, PA on January 22, 1930, the son of Sylvia and David Glosser. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Rita Gordon Glosser, his four children, David (Stephanie), Andy (Vickie), Richard (Cathy), and Amy (Janno), ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Paul was an executive at Glosser Bros, the family-owned regional department store chain, where he ran the 15-store supermarket division.

Paul grew up in Johnstown, went to Miami Beach High, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. While at a fraternity social at Pitt, Paul met Rita Gordon, who became the love of his life. Paul served as a Supply Sargent for the US Army during the Korean War, 1952-1954.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and remembered for a life lived in full.

A bridge connection

T

he Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce bridged the gap between the chamber and its neighbors to the north at the annual Bridge Connection on Aug. 27.

The chamber got together with the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce at the Bridge Tender Inn to network and learn more about each other’s nearby businesses. Attendees at the after-hours event ranged from longtime leadership to curious new members, all getting to know new faces and fellow business owners as they sampled snacks from the saloon.

Once a year, the Bridge Connection event replaces one of the Longboat Key chamber’s Business After Hours get-togethers. In 2020, the members met at Whitney’s on Longboat Key but traveled north for the 2021 edition of the event.

C

arolyn Angiolillo has always been full of stories. Having grown up in old-world Italian Williamsburg, Brooklyn, she had plenty of scenes to re-create — dinners every Sunday, trips to the neighborhood stores, occasional glimpses into the world of organized crime, Catholic school capers. She’s been telling them to captivated friends all her life, and now she has published them.

Angiolillo’s first book, “A Brooklyn Saga: Stories From the Stoop,” came out in August.

demic after giving the urgings of her friends some thought. She’d never thought much about being the actual writer, though. Angiolillo was the storyteller.

“I came from New York 14 years ago, so when I met new friends and everything, I started to talk about the stories up there,” Angiolillo said. “They were all like, ‘Wow, you should write a book.’

It was always in the back of my mind. I would always say, ‘Ooh, that would be a good story.’ I never wrote anything down.”

Although Angiolillo, now 66, retired five years ago, she kept herself busy relearning the guitar and getting back into yoga, so there was no thought of sitting down in one place to write a book.

Until the pandemic hit.

“Last June, … I checked on LinkedIn, and I put out a proposal to find a ghost writer or a co-author or someone who writes books, and I got three responses,” Angiolillo said. “When I was on the phone with the other two, I was on the phone for about 30 minutes. When I was on the phone with Ron (Kule), we were on the phone for over two hours.

He got the drift about the Italian culture. He just got it.”

Angiolillo spent the next few months writing stories, sending them to Kule and taking edits back. The stories got longer and

longer as she kept telling them as she had to backtrack and make sure so-and-so’s background was explained, and the culture of this street got in there, and whose kids were running around. She’d written in some form her whole career, whether it was grants, proposals or programs, and her writing chops warmed up as she kept going.

The book started coming together, Angiolillo said, and chapters were switched around, chopped up and put back entirely differently.

“We started out the book with playing stoopball because when I was a kid, I used to play stoopball,” Angiolillo said. “And we made all the characters, and it looked like that was going to be Chapter 1, and as the months went on, it became Chapter 15.”

The book is a historical fiction coming-of-age story as the main character, Angie, grows up in the vibrant Williamsburg around her.

Originally called “Tacit Consent” because of the silent contract everyone in the neighborhood had to let everyone do their own thing (organized crime figures included), it became “Stories From the Stoop” because that was Angiolillo’s vantage point as a kid.

ANGIOLILLO, ON PIZZA Angiolillo’s first book signing was at La Mucca Ballerina, an Italian restaurant owned by a family from Rome on Main Street in Sarasota. It’s like going home, she said, with handmade everything.

When she was a kid, her uncle would make pizza the old-world way, with thick dough. On Sundays, that was the evening food after the hearty 2 p.m. dinner.

There are different kinds of pizza, and her favorite at La Mucca Ballerina isn’t the same as what her uncle made. At the former, it’s pizza al taglio, a Roman street pizza dish with thick dough and a multitude of toppings, served in a giant slice.

She’s never seen that in the U.S., other than here, she said. Elsewhere, there’s Napolitano pizza, the Naples style that has thick crust and mozzarella. When Angiolillo was young, the most common pizza they had in the house was a Sicilian pie with thin crust, tomato sauce, oregano and Parmesan cheese on top.

“On a Sunday, sometimes when I was a teenager, I used to sit on the stoop alone, and it was quiet on Sunday afternoons, because that was after we all had our Sunday dinner at 2 o’clock,” Angiolillo said. “I’d be sitting there, and I’d be going, ‘I can’t wait to get out of this neighborhood,’ and it was just because there was so much crap going on all the time. … I used to sit there, and I used to wonder what I’m going to do with my life.

So when I started with the book I said: ‘I’m going to do it from sitting on the stoop. That’s going to be my vantage point.’ I could see the whole neighborhood from sitting on that stoop.”

The whole neighborhood was full of fascinating, slice-of-life stories people wanted to hear, such as the ones about the elaborate Sunday dinners.

In Angiolillo’s world, “gravy” refers to tomato sauce, and homemade meatballs were easy to come by.

Williamsburg in the from the 1960s through the ’70s was largely Italian, but diverse, too, and everyone lived in something of a harmony, from the gay couple to the woman who lived with two men to the “made” families.

“The other stories that I really wanted to put in were crazy stories about going to Catholic school,” Angiolillo said. “We were learning about how God’s all forgiving and blah, blah, blah, and then we heard about God punishing, so you couldn’t make it out.”

Angiolillo and Kule finished the book in February and sent it to

friends and family for comments.

Angiolillo read it several times until she stopped catching tiny errors, and she said she appreciated all the rigors her cohort put into the pages. The book was self-published under Carolyn Books LLC with a cover depicting Brooklyn stoops.

Once the writing was done, Angiolillo’s marketing brain kicked into overdrive.

She’s scheduled book signings in Sarasota, New Jersey and New York and has posted about the book in Facebook groups about growing up in Williamsburg.

She’s trying to get on TV and radio and perhaps even spark interest in a screenplay. Interest is growing in her familiar telling of 20th-century Williamsburg.

“It’s funny, too, because when I started writing, I said to myself, ‘I must have grown up in the most (strange) place, but neighborhoods are like that, right?”

Angiolillo said. “Because if you go to any neighborhood, even in this condo, there’s so many things that happen. … Every place is like its own microcosm.”

ith their chestnut plumage and black and white markings, ruddy turnstones stand out among the other sandpipers on our beaches. You’ll also easily spot these stocky shorebirds, energetically feeding along the wrack line (the line of debris left on the beach by high tide) with a foraging style all their own. As indicated by their names, ruddy turnstones use their sturdy beaks to turn over stones, shells, seaweed and other objects in quest of food (mostly invertebrates, including insects).

In addition to their camouflage patterning, which allows them to blend into the environment as they forage among rocks and debris, ruddy turnstones have another useful adaptation. To help them walk on slippery rocks and other coastal surfaces, their feet are spiny, and their short toenails are sharply curved. And although small, these migratory birds, which travel long distance to the arctic tundras to breed, are fast. Flying at 27-47 mph, they can fly up to 620 miles a day.

Like many of our birds, ruddy turnstones are threatened by contaminated waters, which directly threaten their health and the health of their food sources.

And as migratory birds that rely on predictable climate patterns for food and breeding, climate change is a concern.

and waterways clean and by not removing wrack lines, which are an important source of food for them and many other birds.

And when you see turnstones flipping shells and seaweed on the beach, please give them space so they can gain the strength (and fat reserves) they need to fly off to their next destination.

t. Armands Key Lutheran Church was part of high society for a night — at least, the fellowship hall was.

Director of Music Michael Bodnyk organized a movie night for members and showed “High Society” on Aug. 20.

Bodnyk has been organizing movie nights throughout the summer, starting with “Casablanca” in July. It started out as a way to test out their projector equipment and give members a place to get together, but it’s begun to gather steam. There were a few regulars and a few newbies at the Aug. 20 showing, and more outside of the area that wished they could be there.

“We got emails from people who said, ‘Why would you show that movie while we’re up north?’” Bodnyk said.

The popular movie brought about the church’s most successful movie night yet with 15 members in attendance.

Venti gets to the point of his art After trying a range of art media, 72-yearold returns to the colored pencils of his youth.

f ever Art Venti realized he was destined to take a path toward becoming a prominent artist, it was at the age of 5 while watching a syndicated TV series from the 1950s.

“Learn to Draw,” popular from 1950 to 1955, featured 15-minute drawing lessons from instructor Jon Gnagy and encouraged children to purchase an art kit that included a book, sketching paper, drawing pencils, sketching chalks and one laptop drawing surface.

Glued to his family’s blackand-white television in New York City with his drawing kits, Venti began an early love with colored pencils that would span nearly 70 years and include being named a top-five finalist in a juried art exhibit by icon Salvador Dalí for the 15-yearold’s creative rendition of the “Mona Lisa.”

Now the 72-year-old Sarasota transplant still relies his colored pencils in hand, but his art has exhibited and sold nationally and internationally over the past 30 years, including a $5,000 cash buy in the 1980s from a San Francisco financial and real estate mogul who was wowed by a drawing called “Time Continuum.”

Venti said the inspiration behind his surrealist techniques came from Dalí and other wellknown artists “who explore the mysterious worlds that lurk just beneath the conscious mind.”

The result is intensely detailed, amorphous shapes evoking dreamscapes of twisted white bedsheets, swirling ribbons or underwater plants that bring forth a sense of wonder and awe.

His work ranges from small, light, sketchy areas of fragile, almost translucent, wispy lines and shapes that are barely there to the main area of the canvas covered with intense, dense layering. Areas are often drawn over several times with minute pencil lines, sometimes in two or more different colors.

To understand how Venti’s creative mind flows is to revisit

his childhood. While children his age played with Lego and building blocks, 5-year-old Venti was building a custom bed loft in his room to accommodate a desk underneath for sketching. He also created an elaborate diorama of an Egyptian city. (“I swear I was Egyptian from a past life,” he said.)

At age 12, he built yet another elaborate diorama of prehistoric dinosaurs roaming through an idyllic landscape in New Hampshire where his parents owned a summer family farm. The local newspaper featured his diorama on the cover of its publication, praising the young, budding artist.

When Venti turned 16, New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller met the high school sophomore after he won a statewide safety poster contest.

His creations continued to blossom during his adolescence, and after earning enough money from a newspaper route, he adopted a poodle for his mother as a gift and enthusiastically built a modern doghouse. That same year, he built a treehouse so he could see the landscape from afar and marvel at the beauty of the world. He experimented with oil paintings and sculpture as well, expanding his interests, including learning how to play the guitar and writing original music.

In early adulthood, Venti continued his passion for playing the guitar and formed a musical group that played at local weddings, bar mitzvahs and special events, though his key passion remained art. In 1978 he moved to California where he found himself in a “Califor-

nia Dreaming” frame of mind, a big fan of “all rock groups of the era. I loved the eclectic music,” he said.

Venti remained in southern California for 38 years before taking a detour to the U.K. with his wife, Jen, now married 40 years. Venti said he bought a return “Ticket to Ride” (a big Anglophile and major fan of The Beatles) and headed permanently to Sarasota.

Today, Venti smiles when he thinks about his artistic transformations through life and said he is grateful to “beauty first,” when he picks up one of 300 colored pencils that he said helps him create art “that accesses a deeper conscious in the eyes of an observer. They have to relate to it and at the same time use their imagination.”

Although art has a positive side when it comes to all landscapes, Venti said it pains him to see “the darkness” that he describes by pollution.

“I revisit all the pristine environments I appreciated when I was young — whether it was the ocean, a pond, a marsh — and I see it has all changed and isn’t the peaceful, clean environment I once knew,” he said.

After leading a whirlwind life spanning thousands of geographic miles, the couple was inspired to settle in Sarasota because of the weather, music, art and culture.

“Sarasota has helped to inspire me and connect with my spiritual side,” Venti said.

“When one is in a warm climate, we stay active and don’t shut down in the cold winter months,” citing the long winters in New York.

A true “1960s guy” who loved everything about that era, Venti said he wants to continue living his dream in Sarasota’s everevolving community.

“Sarasota Dreaming, that’s me,” he said.

TRIM Notices Are Out! The Truth in Millage (TRIM) Act is a law designed to inform taxpayers which governmental entity is responsible for the taxes levied and the amount of tax liability taxpayers owe to each taxing authority. Every year in August the property appraiser sends this information, known as the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes and Proposed or Adopted Non-Ad Valorem Assessments (TRIM Notice), to the property owner.
