Former Longboat Key resident William “Bill” Colton recently earned a French Legion of Honor Medal for his service in the Army during World War II. During his three years in the Army, Colton experienced combat, including the Battle of the Bulge, and served as an engineer, helping building roads and bridges. The French government honors those who have done something good for the country with the medal, Colton said. “It was a complete surprise,” Colton said. “I didn’t expect it or know anything about it.” Colton lived on Longboat Key for 27 years and says he misses it terribly. He currently resides in Barrington, Ill.
