Town employees rarely get the glory, but City Hall Selfie Day on Aug. 13 brought them front and center with a series of first-person photos highlighting several departments throughout the town.

Departments sent in snapshots of their day to highlight the work they do and the people who do it. The underground-utilities team sent one in from one of their roadside trucks, and the fire department posed on a truck to send in their picture.

New owner puts stamp on store After 15 years, there will be new faces at the UPS store, as owners and siblings Wendi and Neil McDonald are moving on.

McDonald said there have been a lot of regular customers over the years whom they’ve enjoyed getting to know. They became part of the community, even selling Longboat Key Turtle Watch T-shirts, which new Owner Mike Rusnak said he’ll continue to stock.

Rusnak, who moved here from Texas, is from Florida and said it feels good to be home. He spent his first day in the store Aug. 16 and is looking forward to getting to know residents.

After years of work, the Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department has a new station to call home.

Dozens of people attended last week’s grand opening for Fire Station 92, at 2162 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“Since 2011, we’ve been working on this project,” Fire Chief Paul Dezzi said. “I think I’m the happiest guy right now.”

Three shifts of first responders had been living and working out of a temporary trailer on the property since June 2020 but moved into their new digs this week.

“I will tell you that these guys and girls, they made it work,” Dezzi said. “They made no complaints. We never heard a complaint. They knew they were going to get a new home.”

The fire rescue department plans to hold a smaller ceremony in a few weeks for the renovations done at Fire Station 91, at 5490 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Asked about which specific improvements will help the department, Town Manager Tom Harmer mentioned the five separate bedrooms inside the new station. The old station had one large room with traditional firehouse bunks.

Harmer also pointed out the importance of the public medical facility near the station’s front entrance on the south end of the building.

the station just looking for help,” Harmer said. “So now we have designated area right up front, where there will be equipment.

We have trained personnel. They can tend to them and help them right here in the station.

Fire Station 92 is also built to endure 160 mph winds.

“This is also now storm protected, built to a very high standard, so it’s going to be here,” Harmer said. “We don’t neces-

sarily want to ride out a Category 5 hurricane, but we have the most protected building on the island.”

Harmer said he believed the new south-end station would receive recognition.

“I think ultimately it will be an award-winning station,” Harmer said. “I think it’ll get recognition by architects and others because of the product here, but it’s really something, I think, it’s fitting for our firefighter-paramedics and all the work they do.”

Mayor Ken Schneier echoed Harmer’s sentiments.

“Your team is the best, and they deserve the best,” Schneier said to Dezzi. “Whenever we have a celebration like this on Longboat Key, I’m thankful for the good fortune that we all have to live here.”

Harmer mentioned how the Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department received a 94% satisfaction

rate in the town’s 2021 survey.

“It’s the highest-rated of all our departments,” Harmer said. “I know the police are feeling pretty competitive, and I think they were at 93%, so we’ll see what happens next year, but obviously, our residents very much support public safety here on the island and our firefighter-paramedics do a tremendous job.”

With the opening of the new station, Dezzi now has family bragging rights. His sons work for the North Port Fire Rescue Department at Station 85, which they nicknamed “the resort.”

“We kind of mimicked that station from that,” Dezzi said. “And so, my thing was with them, well now they need to come here to see the (real) resort.”

ongboat Key beach enthusiasts have for years had the run of the town’s nearly 11 miles of Gulf of Mexico shoreline, which up until this summer included a 209-foot stretch of privately owned seawall on one of the town’s most iconic properties.

But a few weeks ago, following repairs to the seawall following Hurricane Eta in 2020, the owners of the property known as Ohana at 6633 Gulf of Mexico Drive, posted signs that their property, which extends to the water’s edge, was now off limits.

The only way to avoid trespassing on Ohana Hale Estate Land Trust property now is to wade into the surf, which often breaks right on the seawall, or to make a 1-mile detour along Gulf of Mexico Drive using the two nearest public beach-access spots.

The seawall that extends all the way to the state’s erosion control line is unusual and dates back more than 50 years, Town Attorney Maggie Mooney said.

“All of a sudden, we see signs saying that they had an invisible fence and a dog in training, and that’s where we all went: ‘Oh, OK. Things are changing,’” Longboat Key Turtle Watch Vice President Cyndi Seamon said of volunteers who scour the beach regularly during nesting season.

Mooney explained the public’s right to access the beach area seaward of the state-drawn erosion control line.

“Those same general laws provide that property landward of the ECL is generally considered private property,” Mooney wrote in an email. “My understanding is the seawall runs along the ECL

line, which is the basis for the property owners’ claim and assertion of control over the entire area landward of the seawall.”

Beyond the assertion that passage is prohibited, posted signs make reference to a guard dog.

One that bites.

“It impacts a lot of people that live in Sleepy Lagoon, everybody who is along the beach,” Seamon said. “It impacts a lot of residents.”

A representative of the Ohana Trust did not wish to be interviewed for this story but released a statement via email from an account bearing the name “Michelle Ohana.”

“We have been in frequent dialogue with the town of Longboat Key in reference to public safety concerns and actual incidents involving injuries at the seawall as it relates to liability imposed on the trust,” the email said. “During these communications, we have proposed multiple notions including indemnification by the town of public injury, a safety guard rail, concrete barriers, renourishment of sand seaward of the seawall to provide pedestrian access behind the wall, as well as groins that would hold in that sand permanently.”

The trust indicated the owners have also offered to dedicate owned property for a public

boardwalk “seaward of our wall.”

The trust said that the town has not accepted any of the options it presented.

The Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Department approved a permit in December 2020 for Ohana’s seawall reconstruction following storm damage during Eta in November. The work was valued at $132,000.

Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said Ohana’s proposals aren’t practical. n Maintaining sand on the front side of the seawall: “There is no practical way to maintain sand along the front of the Ohana house seawall,” Brownman wrote in an email to Town Manager Tom Harmer. “There is nothing to hold sand in place along the face of the seawall.” n Constructing a crossover/ boardwalk across the gulf side of the seawall: Brownman wrote that the permitting and the engineering would be “highly challenging, if not unfeasible.” He wrote in an email the boardwalk would need to be built to withstand wave action, and the town would need to maintain it. Brownman also mentioned the challenges of obtaining permits for such a crossover. n Identifying an additional beach access on the north side of the property for a shorter walk around: Brownman said

he did not find any strips of town-owned land on the Manatee County Property Appraiser’s website. “Any property acquisition for same would be prime real estate and likely extremely expensive,” Brownman wrote.

“Any easement for public access would have to be negotiated with private property owner(s), which would likely be an unpopular proposition for some, most or all Gulf-front property owners.”

On two occasions, during beach renourishment projects in 1994 and 2005-06, the town dumped extra sand north and south of the Ohana property in hopes of creating a dry strip between the seawall and the tide. The overplacement of sand lasted only a few years before it washed away, Brownman said.

In 2019, the Ohana property sold for $11.4 million. Kathryn Hutcheson sold the property to Elliott, Robinson & Co. LLP, a Missouri limited liability partnership, as trustee of the Ohana Hale Estate Land Trust.

For people to walk around the Ohana property, Longboat Key offers beach access points at 6847 Gulf of Mexico Drive to the north and 6399 Gulfside Road near General Harris Street to the south. The two beach accesses are about a mile apart.

Seamon said she is hopeful the Ohana property owners and the town can reach some sort of compromise.

“It would be great to have that access that we used to have,” Seamon said.

Mooney said the town is looking into the history of the property and the seawall’s permitting, previous public access and potential customary uses to determine whether there is a public right of access across some portion of the property.

“It is also my understanding that the seawall and the unique beach frontage conditions at this site have been there for over 50-plus years,” Mooney wrote.

Residents wary of shift in St. Armands zoning Commercial property owners say new building regulations would have a minimal impact.

Before fielding input on a proposal to revise St. Armands Circle zoning regulations to allow for taller buildings, hotel projects and more residential units, Geoffrey Michel encouraged the audience at a community workshop to push past any instincts to say “not in my backyard.”

“If I reflect back to John Ringling — he built a bridge so we could all come out here and enjoy it,” Michel said. “What if he said, ‘Not in my backyard,’ and he just wanted to keep this island to himself? … This is a place people want to be. Does that mean traffic? Of course it does. But anybody that’s concerned and angry about traffic, you weren’t the first one here, and you’re probably not going to be the last.”

Despite that plea from Michel, the owner of The Met and a member of the St. Armands Business Improvement District, traffic was a primary subject of discussion as residents weighed in on the prospect of new building rules on the Circle. On Aug. 5, the city of Sarasota hosted a virtual workshop

about a series of proposed comprehensive plan and zoning code amendments the BID is calling Vision 2026.

Since last year, the BID has been developing a plan for rewriting regulations on the Circle to accommodate renovations and redevelopment in the commercial tourist district. BID board members have framed their proposal as a necessary step to ensure St. Armands remains a lively destination into the future.

“I would encourage anybody to walk the Circle and see the need for improvement, see the need for change,” Michel said. “Not aggressive, high-rise, corporate change but community change and community evolution.”

At the Aug. 5 workshop, architect Dan Lear outlined the provisions included in the Vision 2026 proposal. Key changes include: n Increasing the maximum building height on the Circle from 35 feet to 45 feet above base elevation. n Allowing hotel development at a density of 150 units per acre. n Increasing residential density to 30 units per acre. n Establishing design standards for buildings and streetscapes.

Although Michel attempted to present the changes as modest and in keeping with similar commercial districts in Naples and Palm Beach, the presentation drew questions and concerns from most residents in atten-

dance. Chris Goglia, the president of the St. Armands Residents Association, said the group intended to survey its members to get more detailed feedback to the proposed revisions. On first blush, however, Goglia said he believed resident support would hinge on the BID’s ability to conclusively demonstrate that its plans wouldn’t exacerbate existing issues related to congestion.

“The traffic is crazy, and we wish that people would acknowledge that and work to solve that problem,” Goglia said.

Carl Shoffstall, the president of the Lido Key Residents Association, expressed concern about the traffic associated with a hotel on the Circle. Shoffstall said he believed the BID needed to do more research to justify the desired changes.

“I don’t see what the hurry is on this,” Shoffstall said.

During the presentation, Michel said the new building regulations could provide benefits

for residents, including a higherquality commercial district in close proximity to their homes.

Two speakers at the workshop expressed their support for the proposal, including Lido Key resident Michael Polelle, who said he was excited about the prospect of the changes facilitating the construction of a convenience store on the barrier islands.

Polelle noted that traffic is attributable from trips starting on Lido and St. Armands, not just journeys from the mainland, and he said solving congestion issues was a separate task from considering the proposed changes.

“If this development doesn’t go ahead, we are still going to have traffic problems, and unless something is done, they’re going to get worse,” Polelle said.

The potential regulatory changes are being advanced separately from a proposal to build a hotel on the site of the Fillmore Drive parking lot, though that redevelopment concept was submitted

by a group including BID board member Gavin Meshad. The City Commission was scheduled to discuss the future of the Fillmore Drive lot at a meeting this week.

Following the workshop, the BID intends to review the public input and finalize language for a formal application with the city.

Depending on the text of that final proposal, the group could be required to hold another community workshop. According to Lear, any revisions would not go to the Planning Board and City Commission until the first quarter of 2022 at the earliest.

Although there were vocal reservations about the BID’s preliminary proposal at the Aug. 5 workshop, St. Armands property owners remain steadfast in their belief that changes are necessary to maintain the quality and character of the Circle.

“We can’t just leave well enough alone because well enough isn’t going to look pretty in 10 years,” Michel said.

In May, Caitlyn Zaborowski moved from Danbury, Connecticut, to Longboat Key. On June 6, she began her new role with the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce.

he Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce staff is growing again.

In June, the chamber hired Caitlyn Zaborowski as vice president of membership services. Zaborowski, 35, will also serve as Chamber President Gail Loefgren’s full-time assistant.

In Zaborowski’s new role, she said she hopes to improve the chamber’s membership experience.

“I want to make sure that the members are taken care of and (realize) the benefits that they have being a member,” she said.

The chamber is working on a new database, which will include an orientation for members. It will allow members to understand how to use the chamber’s website, sign up for events and understand how to use the resources available to them.

“I’m obviously still learning a lot, and the best part is getting to know all the people and all the businesses and interacting with them and kind of learning what Gail (Loefgren) does on a daily basis, getting involved with the marketing,” Zaborowski said. “No day is ever the same.”

At the end of May, Zaborowski moved from Danbury, Connecticut, to Longboat Key with her 4-year-old son, Liam.

Zaborowski was born in South Korea before she was adopted at 2 months old.

Family is what drew Zaborowski to the Longboat Key. Her aunt has lived on the Key for 35 years and works for Wagner Realty.

Her mom has also since moved to Longboat.

“It’s just a much better quality of life here than Connecticut right now,” Zaborowski said. “I’ve always visited here when I was younger.

“My cousin and I used to come and spend like a month with my grandparents, so it’s a place I’ve always known. And I didn’t really ever think I’d call it home, but here we are.”

Zaborowski brings 12 years of experience selling insurance in New York, specifically on Long

Island and in Westchester County.

She worked for Allstate, Colonial Penn, State Farm and a brokerage on behalf of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company.

“I did car insurance, home insurance,” Zaborowski said. “I even did a little bit of supplemental health, things like that, so it was always a sales and service role. … Those skills kind of carry over.”

Zaborowski has a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Connecticut.

After Zaborowski’s time in the insurance industry, she decided to pursue new endeavors. Her aunt knew of the opening at the chamber.

“I was actually considering doing insurance down here,” Zaborowski said. “I had looked at a couple of places. (I) still wasn’t sure. (I) was still playing with the idea of getting out of that industry, and then this job came up, and I said: ‘You know what? That sounds perfect. It sounds perfect for me.’”

Outside of work, Zaborowski likes going to Whitney’s, visiting Bradenton Beach and participating in outdoor activities with her son.

“It’s definitely a feeling of community that I’ve never experienced living anywhere else,” Zaborowski said. “Everybody’s very friendly. Again, (I’m) getting used to that too being from the Northeast.”

elf-described “bird guy” Aaron Virgin is the new CEO of Save Our Seabirds. After moving to Sarasota in late 2019, he began working for Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium as its philanthropy officer in October 2020 and now plans to put his fundraising background to work for the seabird organization on City Island. What drew you to Save Our Seabirds?

I was (at Mote) about nine months with the intent of staying two and a half, three years.

You build a portfolio, you work with those folks, and maybe I would have stayed longer. But it was one of those things where I wasn’t even looking, but this job just popped up, right? The funny thing is, I do a little bird walk around Ken Thompson Park here.

As I was walking around here, I saw that this place was closed down, and I thought, “Wow, that’s a bummer.” Mote started allowing more people in, and the mask policy was dropped and all that. And this place still didn’t open. I thought, “What is going on?” So I went on the website and saw they’re doing a capital campaign and that there’s a lot of good stuff here. I would peek into the fence, and I thought: “Wow, they’re really sprucing up. They’re really cleaning it up.”

And then around the same time, I saw the job posting. It

was one of those things where I saw it on my phone, and I put my phone down really quickly because I was like, “This is good.

This is bad.” … There were just so many reasons why (Mote) is a great place. But the birding part is who I am.

What do you see in the future of Save Our Seabirds?

We’re probably looking at (restarting the capital campaign at the) end of this year, maybe early next year. I saw where this place was going, and looking two, three years down the line, when the aquarium does move, this will be why people come to City Island. There’s so much that can be done here. Back in 2018, the city granted a long-term lease to Save Our Seabirds, so then we can really lay out a big vision. It’s just a great town in terms of philanthropy.

a reopening, and the team here has done a great job in terms of cleaning up the sanctuary and the aviary habitats, and there’s all new signage. One, it’s appealing; two, it’s highly educational; and three, it just raises the visitor experience tremendously.

In the past, we just had maybe a name of the bird, but now you have what the bird looks like.

We’re doing free admission right now, just to get the people back in here. The other thing we’re working on is how the reopening is impacting the birds.

Interestingly, all signs point to that they kind of like the interaction. There’s an enrichment to it right now.

How will Save Our Seabirds change under your leadership?

What I’m trying to do is just kind of get the ducks in a row, no pun intended, and see where we’re at.

My predecessor, his fundraising skill set was a little different.

He was very keen on grants and community outreach and raising money that way, so I want to continue that. But at the same time, my background is more major donors and really sitting down with people and viewing this as is almost like an investment and doing events to have people learn more about the organization, learn a little bit more about me. (We will probably have) salon events, which would be your large donors, maybe a group of supporters who are bringing in some other

people that are new to the organization, and that will feed into the capital campaign efforts.

I’ve been in touch with the architects and the educational consultants, and everyone’s like, “Hey, whenever you’re ready, let us know.” Same with the city.

Everyone’s on board. Everyone was supportive with the reopening.

When did you first consider yourself a “bird guy”?

I always considered myself a naturalist. I was always as a kid flipping over rocks, looking for salamanders and trying to catch frogs, that sort of thing. I was always outdoors, loved hiking and camping stuff like that.

I started noticing birds coming back when I was in high school, so I went up to college, and I was going to be taking a bunch of classes on field ecology. I was hiking by myself, and I came face to face with a black-throated blue warbler. It’s very striking, so it was burned in my head. The whole hike down, which is probably about four or five hours, I was thinking about the bird and hearing other birds.

So I found the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds, and it was in there along with about 42 other warblers, and I’m like, “Oh, there’s a whole group of birds called warblers,” and I became obsessed. Birders sometimes call it the gateway bird.

You need to read this magazine story. An oldschool reporter shines light on a miracle drug and efforts to quash it.

e are connecting you this week to an amazing, extraordinary story of a miracle drug that is “the most powerful COVID-19 killer known to science.”

You may have heard of it: ivermectin.

Dr. Paul Marik, famous in world medical circles, the second-most published critical care doctor in the history of medicine, told a former colleague of mine and friend, journalist Michael Capuzzo, if ivermectin “were universally distributed at a dose that costs 10 American cents in India and about the cost of a Big Mac in the U.S., ivermectin would save countless lives, crush variants, eliminate the need for endless big pharma booster shots and end the pandemic all over the world.”

That sounds like over-thetop, not-to-be-believed hype.

But it’s not.

If you do anything today, or this week, you must read Capuzzo’s story, “The Drug That Cracked COVID,” which was published in the May edition of his and wife Teresa’s Pennsylvania magazine, Mountain Home.

It appears the numbers are few. Doctors repeatedly have told journalist Michael Capuzzo the pressure against its use from the medical establishment and government agencies is unprecedented.

Nonetheless, cardiologist Dr. Bruce Boros, who operates three clinics in the Florida Keys, was among the first Florida physicians to surface as a prescriber of ivermectin.

While telling the story of an 80-year-old Buffalo, New York, woman fighting for access to ivermectin, which ultimately saved her life, Capuzzo tells what is currently the only complete history of the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance. This is an alliance that started with five of the world’s most revered pulmonary critical-care doctors who have been fighting with proven science for the recognition and distribution that ivermectin deserves. They are now at the center of a movement of physicians around the world trying to spread the efficacy and use of ivermectin against COVID-19, and more importantly, they are saving hundreds of thousands of lives with ivermectin.

In an email last week, Capuzzo told us he and his wife attended a three-day strategic planning conference involving the FLCCC founders. Wrote Capuzzo: “The No. 1 jaw-dropper: Ivermectin is crushing all variants in Brazil, South Africa, England, doctors on the ground tell Dr. Kory, and ‘slaying the

Capuzzo’s story is full of examples of doctors all over the world reporting how ivermectin is saving lives and eradicating COVID-19. These doctors also all say how they have run into repeated resistance from the medical establishment, public health agencies and politicians against the use of ivermectin.

And yet, as the stories of this miracle drug spread around the world, the mainstream media continues to ignore the news.

This behavior of the media prompted Capuzzo to call them out in his Mountain Home story.

We’ve known Capuzzo since our days nearly 40 years ago in the newsroom of the Miami Herald. He was an all-star, oldschool reporter, a true believer in tracking down and verifying facts. And he became an expert storyteller, becoming a New York Times Books bestselling author while he and his wife owned their little magazine in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Capuzzo and his wife stumbled onto the ivermectin story on Mother’s Day 2020 when they were watching “Dr. Kory testify to the U.S. Senate about his group’s first breakthrough, a steroid treatment that was saving 95% of COVID-19 patients when 80% were dying in New York City, and the world was in panic.”

When we polled the six hospitals in Sarasota and Manatee counties on whether they are allowing doctors to prescribe ivermectin, three hospitals responded before deadline: Neither Blake Hospital in Bradenton nor Doctors Hospital in Sarasota, both owned by HCA Healthcare, is allowing the use of ivermectin.

“Ivermectin is not approved by the FDA for use in treating COVID-19 and has not been shown effective,” wrote Dr. Mitchell Rubinstein, Blake’s chief medical officer. “The FDA.gov website advises against using ivermectin.”

Monica Yadav, Doctors Hospital’s spokesperson, echoed Rubinstein’s reference to the FDA, adding “there is not enough data currently to suggest a patient benefit.”

A spokesperson for Sarasota Memorial Hospital said ivermectin has been used sparingly at SMH. But its use requires physicians to follow the hospital’s protocols for unconventional medicines.

But after that testimony, there was nothing in the media.

That triggered Capuzzo’s curiosity. This was news! A story that needed telling. He spent the next several months piecing together the story of ivermectin and the famous Front Line COVID Critical Care Alliance doctors. He wrote: “I’ve seen unthinkable things” — referring to the behavior of the media.

At the end of an editor’s note introducing his 10,000-word story, Capuzzo issued a call to “my fellow colleagues (journalists) … to open their hearts and minds to legitimate, unreported doctors and therapies and write about all sides of the ivermectin story, like journalists always have. It is a historic opportunity.

“For the first time in the long journey from Gutenberg to Google,” Capuzzo wrote, “journalists may be the ones to save the world.”

Rescue assist: An officer called for fire rescue after finding a man on the ground. The man said he had fallen and injured his face. Fire rescue arrived soon after, though the man refused hospital transport.

NEW DEAL 7:31 a.m., 800 block of Marbury Lane Civil dispute: A caller sought police help in a dispute with a moving company, though the officer reported no criminal wrongdoing. The caller said a different company than the one with which she contracted arrived at her home. The moving company said it had purchased the previous contract and that there were now additional charges due. The caller claimed a breach of contract and wanted police report to document the events for future reference.

Hazy, crazy summer days at Lazy Lobster

embers of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce were anything but lazy at their Aug. 11 Networking at Noon event.

About two dozen local business members came to Lazy Lobster for a break in their workdays and to get to know their fellow businesspeople.

“It’s nice to be in August as busy as we are, and it’s nice to be at a chamber event and see so many smiling faces,” Lazy Lobster Owner Michael Garey said.

Corporate representative Sharon Gould from Michael Saunders & Co. updated the group on the swell of luxury sales and how incoming home buyers want to focus on buying local. Chamber leaders updated the members on upcoming events, such as the October golf tournament at the Longboat Key Club and Small Business Week nominations, before attendees settled in for lunch. Several were eating at Lazy Lobster for the first time.

Preceded in death by his sister Gwendolyn Reed Baker, Caren is survived by his brothers: Gareth (LaVonne) and Keith (Beth). He is also survived by Judy, his wife of 65 years, three children: Tim (Liz), Betsy Clark and Andy, seven grandchildren--Graham Clark, Emery Clark (Melissa), Julia Williams (Ben), Maddie, Jack, Peter and Anna, two great grandchildren, 12 nephews and nieces and several grand nephews and nieces. Caren’s extended family reside in seven states from California to Massachusetts.

Caren was born November 14, 1934 to Florence and Ivan Reed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Martelle High School and Iowa State University. He married his college sweetheart, Judy, and moved to Evanston, Illinois after Caren accepted a position with the Continental Illinois National Bank, where he worked as a commercial banker for 34 years eventually becoming Executive Vice President and Head of North American Banking.

After his career with Continental, Caren became a Founding Principal and President of The Private Bank and Trust in Chicago, rising to Vice Chairman of the Board before retiring in 1999.

Caren was a memorable person who loved and was loved greatly and will be forever missed.

During his career and even after retirement Caren was active in many community and business boards with his favorites being a Director of the Ravinia Festival Board, Chairman of the Mather Foundation from 2006-2011, multiple terms in two HOAs and then Treasurer of the Bird Key Yacht Club in Sarasota without ever having owned a boat! But he was very exacting and precise with financial matters and was asked by many organizations for his assistance. Even when he served six years in the Iowa National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve he was usually put in charge of handling payroll matters.

Caren will be remembered for his love of family, God and Country, loyalty, business success, honesty, and a warm smile that often included a knowing twinkle in

No pressure, but are you ready to launch your new space?

Yes, almost. We still have a few loose ends. But we plan to open on Sept. 10, and I think we’ll meet the deadline. It’s all thanks to our volunteers — not just our own team members but people from across the community who believe in our mission. We obviously have to pay for things like electrical services and the fire alarm. But most of the work is donated labor. Our volunteers are just amazing.

What can we expect on your new stage? Have you nailed down your 2021-22 season yet?

Yes, we know what shows we’ll perform. We just don’t know when. The run dates are still in flux, but we should announce them very soon.

What’s one of your favorite plays in the new season?

I really love “Taxímetro Adulterado” by Felipe Vallejo — a fantastic Colombian playwright. He gave us the rights to stage his play with our own actors. We’re the only theater company in the world who got his permission. It was such an honor for us. We did four runs before the pandemic. Now we’re bringing it back for our new season.

given many local actors their start. One woman was very into fashion design. That was her dream. But she gave acting a try with us. After just one time on stage, she was hooked.

She said: “I like fashion design, but I love acting. Now that I’ve done it, I know what I want to do with my life.”

I love your connection to a Colombian playwright. I’m imagining a global network of Spanish-speaking theater talents.

There really is such a network.

We have great relationships with many talented playwrights from all over Spain and Latin America. But we’re also connected to a network of Spanish-speaking talents who live in our community.

Let’s get back to your upcoming season. What’s your second favorite play?

They’re all my favorites! And I really want to say, we’re doing more than plays this season.

We’re also doing a celebration of Spanish Heritage Month, a show featuring a Spanishspeaking comedian, a bilingual improv night and a concert of music from the Andes. We’ve also featured dance and visual arts in our past seasons and different classes and workshops. You see what these art forms have in common? Music, art, dance — these are all ways to communicate without words and reach out to a larger audience. That’s one big reason we became a cultural center.

Yes. Our actors are a mix of veterans from hundreds of plays and total newbies. We’ve

It’s a comedy and a love story.

Hopefully, our audience will leave happier than they did coming in. People really need that right now.

with a single focus: Make live theater accessible to Spanishspeaking audiences. So that’s what we did — and it’s all we did. We kept reminding people: “The theater, the theater. That is our identity!” But our identity was slowly changing. We started doing a few concerts along with the plays. Then we added other events, like guitar lessons, language classes, book clubs and art classes. We never stopped growing and expanding our work for the community. In the process, our mission evolved. We finally had to realize we’re more than a Spanishlanguage theater company now. We’re doing the work of a cultural center. That’s why we changed our name in 2019.

You embraced what you’d already become.

I’d say that’s correct. And that really was a big decision.

But the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation has totally supported our evolution.

Just this year, they blessed us with an amazing $71,000 grant. They truly believe in our mission. Their grant allows us to hire permanent staff for the very first time. We’re so incredibly grateful.

reArte Latino Cultural Center is a local Spanish-language arts group. The nonprofit has been around since 2012.

CreArte Latino was its first incarnation: a Spanish-language theater troupe doing a few plays a year on borrowed stages.

In 2017, the troupe moved into a home of its own — a theater near SarasotaBradenton International Airport. Now it’s building a new home, and it’s going to be state of the art.

We spoke about this milestone to Carolina Franco, CreArte Latino Cultural Center’s artistic director, president and co-founder. As she sees it, the group’s new name reflects its creative evolution.

And that evolution has just begun.

Mike Ciccone’s motto is “Block all the negative vibes, and keep the positive vibes.”

His quintessential “island life” hobbies include fishing, crabbing and boating, of course, but not much beats a good beach walk, a cigar and the sunset.

“I’m into the sunset,” he said. “We’re on the bayside, so we’ll go out to the dock, and I’ll just sit out there and bring my fishing pole. It’s just a different life, you know?”

ne man’s shipwreck is another man’s wine bottle holder.

Mike Ciccone, a recent full-time Longboater, is living the life on the Key both on the Gulf and right at home. He takes his boat out every weekend and outfits his condo in touches of the island.

As someone in construction, he likes to take on projects and built a bar in his home that he covered in epoxy to look like the ocean. His wine bottle holder has an interesting backstory, though.

The wood came from the wreckage of the ill-fated sailboat that crashed on Longboat Key and was eventually washed away by Hurricane Eta in November 2020.

“When that storm came and took it back out, the debris was busted up right behind the condo, so I was trying to help clean the beach up, and I made a couple nice little decorative things for us,” Ciccone said.

He made a few versions for himself and his family with the wood he picked up. When he posted it to the I Love Longboat Key FL Facebook group, where a lot of his positive-island-lifevibe posts garner likes and slightly envious comments, someone reached out to ask if he would make another one to buy from Ciccone. He offered to make the curious buyer a replica because he was out of sailboat wood, but the other man wanted it to have meaning. Ciccone isn’t looking to sell anything he makes — he just wants it to have meaning, too.

His wife, Sue Ann, said he makes things for the house with whatever he’s got; recently, she got a pen holder from a chunk of wood he had. The couple lives in Longboat Harbour, and after Ciccone noticed pieces of artwork between some of the buildings, he got the idea to eventually do a piece in honor of his parents who

lived here before him.

“I’m picking up a lot of driftwood, and I’m trying to do some stuff with it,” Ciccone said. “I have some different ideas with it.

I’m just cleaning the beach up.”

It’s rare that a day goes by without Ciccone sticking his feet in the Longboat Key sand now that he lives on the island full time. Along with the driftwood, he’s collecting all the beach-based hobbies he can. Ciccone recently got a metal detector and has already found an emerald and diamond ring, some old coins, and a bullet in the sand.

“I’m just keeping all the stuff that I’m finding,” Ciccone said.

“I only just started a couple weeks ago, but it’s another fun hobby.”

Even before moving to Longboat Key full time, the Ciccones came out to the island pretty much every weekend. They run an Instagram account, @Happy_Hour.Hunters1, where they keep track of and review the area’s happy hours.

“We started going to a lot of places during the first bad red tide, just wanting to keep them in business,” Sue Ann Ciccone said.

She has been coming to Longboat Key with the Ciccone family since the couple got married 28 years ago. Ciccone’s mom owned the Longboat Harbour condo before them, but they only went to the same few places to eat. The couple want to make sure they spread the local love, so they’ve

Ciccone and his wife still work in Lakewood Ranch, but they just wanted to get the island life going as soon as possible. Their retirements are coming up, but they’re just getting retirement practice in. They take their time on the way home and keep a change of non-work clothes in the car so they can hit a happy hour before heading home to their Longboat Key sunsets, which Ciccone said are one of his favorite parts of island life.

“We used to come up here every weekend,” Sue Ann said. “Now he’s living his best life.”

Temple Beth Israel makes ‘thyme’ for friends

I

t was party “thyme” for members of Longboat Key’s Temple Beth Israel as they gathered Aug. 11 for a Men’s Club dinner at Rosemary and Thyme in Sarasota.

Although it was organized by the men’s club, about 20 men and women of the temple came for a fixed dinner in their own room at the restaurant.

In June, the club organized a lunch at Harry’s Continental

Kitchens on Longboat Key. A few didn’t make the trek over Ringling Bridge in the rain, but members of Temple Beth Israel filled up three tables in one room of the restaurant. Attendees found their seats, chatted with those around them and strolled around the room to catch up with everyone who came before dinner.

Brooklyn writer shares stories from the stoop

T

here was a bit of old-time Williamsburg in Sarasota on Aug. 12 as Longboat Key author Carolyn Angiolillo shared her long-awaited book, “A Brooklyn Saga: Stories from the Stoop.”

Angiolillo, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel along with Ronald Joseph Kule, hosted a book signing at La Mucca Ballerina in downtown Sarasota to celebrate the release. Angiolillo wrote it based on her own experience growing up in an Italian neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

“This was a thing I always

wanted to do as I saw Williamsburg changing,” Angiolillo said.

“I always used to tell stories to my friends, and they would say, ‘You should write a book.’”

Attendees chatted with Angiolillo and Kule and sampled La Mucca Ballerina’s Italian treats throughout the evening. Angiolillo read a chapter from the book that described a typical day on her block and added details and context in as she read.

“It’s a slice of the old Italian Williamsburg I wanted to portray,” Angiolillo said.

Mottled duck T

he mottled duck, also known as the Florida duck, is a close relative of the familiar greenheaded mallard ducks often seen in city parks. Similar in appearance, the mottled duck can be distinguished by its brown head.

It is endemic to Florida, meaning it is a unique subspecies found only in peninsular Florida, where it lives in both brackish and freshwater marshes. Importantly, the mottled duck is a defining member of the unique group of species characteristic of the Florida prairie ecosystem.

Rapid changes in Florida’s landscape, as result of development and agricultural use, have resulted in the destruction and degradation of many natural areas upon which mottled ducks depend. With habitat loss, mottled ducks will move to developed areas, where they make use of urban and suburban wetlands, such as retention ponds and drainage ditches. And here they encounter yet another threat to their existence: hybridization with feral mallards.

Wild mallards winter in Florida in scattered, small flocks and then leave for their northern breeding areas in the spring. They are therefore not present during the mottled duck breeding season.

However, many captive-reared mallards, which don’t migrate, are unlawfully released by humans in Florida. And escaped, farm-

raised mallards also contribute to this rapidly growing feral population. Feral mallards mate with mottled ducks, producing a growing number of hybrid offspring. Complete hybridization could result in the extinction of the Florida mottled duck.

To conserve our mottled ducks, protecting coastal and rural marsh habitats might also help to prevent increases in hybridization, by encouraging mottled ducks to avoid urban areas where mallards occur. And by not feeding or sheltering existing feral mallards, we can avoid supporting them.

The mottled duck is a unique subspecies found only in peninsular Florida, where it resides in both brackish and freshwater marshes.
