Here’s the scoop: Tyler’s Ice Cream Longboat Key is finally home to its own ice cream shop. On Aug. 12, Tyler’s Gourmet Ice Cream Shop opened in the Centre Shops.

Tyler’s, which also has locations in Cortez and and Bradenton, offers 32 flavors, chocolate bark from Chocolate Bark Co. and mason jar desserts from the Lazy Lobster.

The shop, which is a collaboration between Tyler’s Ice Cream and the Lazy Lobster will have the same hours as Lazy Lobster: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. After Labor Day, hours switch to 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Dan Alderson co-owns the shop with his son, Rob and daughter-in-law Laura, along with Lazy Lobster co-owners Michael Garey and Bob Fracalossy. Although it was a quiet opening, Alderson said it went well.

“We were very pleasantly surprised because we didn’t do any advertising as yet,” he said. “We’re going to start doing that, but we wanted to do a real soft opening so we could get all the kinks out.”

Five crumbling commercial use buildings will be bulldozed by Friday at the long-idle Colony Beach and Tennis Resort to make way for an eventual $1 billion redevelopment of the roughly 18-acre property.

“It’s baby steps,” said Unicorp National Development President Chuck Whittall, who is spearheading the redevelopment.

The Longboat Key Planning Zoning and Building Department issued permits Aug. 11 for demolition of the five Colony buildings closest to Gulf of Mexico Drive.

PZB Director Alaina Ray said the buildings had begun to collapse with roofs caved in or sagging, and walls starting to lean.

Former uses included a spa, small conference center, housekeeping, maintenance and laundry.

“This is the first progress we’ve seen in about six years, so this is a good sign,” Ray said of the demolition permits.

All property could be razed within nine months. Redevelopment will not happen so quickly though, Ray said.

Whittall has outlined plans for a 180-unit hotel, with an additional 180 condominiums but will seek approval for up to 417 units. That would provide 237 tourism units if owners of every unit opted to keep a unit with a 30-day stay option.

COURT RULING FAVORS BEACH UNIT OWNERS A one-word 2nd District Court of Appeal ruling dated Aug. 12 upheld a May 13, 2015, decision in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court regarding a unit at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort.

“Affirmed,” comprised the entire brief upholding an earlier decision favoring plaintiffs, unit owners Sheldon and Carol Rabin.

The Rabins sued the Colony board of directors claiming it failed to perform repairs and maintenance, which caused them significant financial harm.

Alan Tannenbaum of Sarasota, the Rabin’s attorney, said the next step is filing for damages.

“This ruling is virtually unappealable,” Tannenbaum said.

Unicorp President Chuck Whittall said the ruling will not affect the planned $1 billion redevelopment at the Colony.

The con mailer presents a bleak outlook if the Aug. 30 referendum fails.

“Saying no brings low-rent commercial development to Longboat Key,” reads one mailer.

“Don’t let another strip mall, pawn shop or worse come to our community by saying no.”

The mailer is littered with small photos of a “pawn” sign, a “tattoos” sign behind barred windows and a black-and-white nondescript storefront.

The pro mailer features soaring birds such as pelicans, brilliant (presumably) Florida sunsets and pristine beaches.

“Let’s control the type of growth we have on Longboat by saying yes,” reads the mailer with a check mark next to a ballot box next to the word yes. “Let’s keep

our town in control of its own destiny.”

The Town Commission approved a request from Sarasota-based developer Floridays to ask voters to create density on 2.6 acres of north-end land. If the referendum passes, Floridays will likely apply for 105 additional units from a pool of 250 tourism units that voters approved in 2008 to build a 120-unit hotel.

Some residents have protested plans for a new hotel skirting the Longbeach Village. Commissioners approved the project request for a referendum citing the need to revitalize properties such as a long-vacant gas station and a bank building.

Floridays project manager James Brearley did not return several calls for comment about

the mailers.

Even if voters approve the referendum, the project is not a done deal. Developers will have to file for a rezone and comprehensive plan amendment to change the property’s future land use in September if the referendum passes, said Alaina Ray, Longboat Key director of Planning, Zoning and Building.

Craig Walters, chairman of the Keep Longboat Special group lobbying against the hotel, said it’s unfortunate developers chose to advance Floridays’ application process with shameful innuendos from a PAC. “It’s created a really awkward situation for our commissioners,” Walters said. “They did not deserve that.”

As a 150-foot-long dredge makes its way this week through Lake Okeechobee and the Intracoastal Waterway to begin a $5 million renourishment project in New Pass, Commissioner Irwin Pastor can’t wait to get his beach back.

“I’m excited,” said Pastor, who is president of L’Ambiance condominiums. “We haven’t had a beach for the whole season. Our property is on the same level as the Gulf of Mexico, and it will be nice to see that corrected.”

Pastor blamed unusual winter winds from the northwest with beginning the gradual erosion, which eventually stripped away the protective 6-foot dunes.

“Normally, we don’t get much erosion with sand drifting to the south,” Pastor said. “So this is abnormal to see the south beach have the problems we’ve had.”

The Resort at Longboat Key Club is also prepared for dredging to begin.

“We believe the dredging project will have minimal impact on the day-to-day operations of the resort,” wrote Sandra Rios, of the Resort of Longboat Key Club, in an email. “We do not have concerns as the town has done an excellent job of communicating timelines and the scope of work that needs to be done. We are well-informed and, as a result, have been able to put plans in place to address the upgrades that will be made to our beach.”

Norfolk Dredging Co. of Chesapeake, Va., is already mobilizing equipment, including a pipe on the beach, according to Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa. Actual dredging is scheduled to begin Friday.

“Other than weather or major equipment issues, I have no concerns,” he said. “This company is a big company and has been around a long time.”

A hydraulic dredging vessel will pump 200,000 cubic yards of sand from New Pass onto the shoreline between L’Ambiance and Regent Place.

For sure the budget. With that will come Common Core issues and curriculum issues, and for me, a huge issue will be transparency.

What should the district’s priorities be when looking for a new superintendent?

First of all, I would like to have the opportunity to have a say in it, and I don’t think I will even get that opportunity. Any time you have new board members coming on, the relationship is imperative between who the new superintendent will be and who your school board is. You want it to be a good marriage...I would like them to slow down the process...We have a very unique culture in Sarasota County, and he

How should the district navigate a period of growth with continuing budgetary restraints?

The first thing is I believe we should have zero budgeting. Zero budgeting is just literally saying that if our budget is a $740 million or $760 million budget, we should be able to make it in those dollars...I do think it’s adequate.

We just need to be very accountable for it. We’re second highest in the state for what we spend per student, and there are many other municipalities that are doing much more with much less.

Would you consider revisiting the current impact fee system?

I’m for very measurable impact fees because it is a significant revenue generator for the schools in order to be able to afford the capital improvement projects that we have. Currently, it’s at 26%, and I think that’s a pretty fair amount for what we use it for, for what we are going to need to use it for. I do think it’s something that needs to be visited. How often? I’m not sure about that, but when we do visit it, staff needs to be providing us with very current data and stats.

One of the main reasons is we are hiring a new superintendent, and I want to be a part of that decision making, because I’ve been involved in the schools. I know the school community, I know our community, I’ve been involved in all areas of it.

Our deputy CFO is also retiring. That leaves a vacuum of knowledge leaving this district.

I have that knowledge – with 17 years on the school board, on and off — of what we’ve done and what we’re doing now and where we’re hoping to go in the future.

What are the top three issues the board will have to address in the next term?

Teacher shortages, number one.

Do you think fundraising has shifted the focus of the race?

My vote on impact fees impacted me. I had two reports in front of me, and both of them I felt were not accurate. I could see the growth that we’re having in our community as I drive around — no matter where you go, there’s growth. I knew that we needed impact fees. I tried to think if I could delay them for two years as was being suggested, but in recognizing the growth we have and how long it’s going to take us to be able to gather any funds at all in order to purchase the land that we need to build new schools, I had to vote for impact fees — at the lowest percentage I could.

That impacted me, because some people got angry with me for my vote. I can tell you I lost $5,000 right off the bat, and I lost the support of some people. But I did the right thing.

Why do you want to serve on the County Commission?

My neighborhood and other people out east of 75 encouraged me to run. They felt a handful of developers were just doing projects all over Sarasota and that a lot of things weren’t being addressed to benefit taxpayers.

My whole platform is based on what I call responsible growth.

I do agree that we need growth.

On the same token, it’s gotta make sense. We shouldn’t be focusing on a lot of new projects when you have other areas that need attention.

What are the top three issues the County Commission must address?

Growth is going to be huge. I believe that our infrastructure, roads and traffic are going to be huge as well. I know they kind of tie in together, but there are areas where there’s not growth but the roads need to be fixed, like River Road.

Third is the homeless issue.

I’ve walked up and down Main Street, and businesses — they’re beside themselves with this homeless issue.

What is your position on the proposed project to dredge Big Pass and renourish Lido Key? Here’s my take on that: Those are very sensitive issues on both sides. That’s one of those scenarios where I think it’s something where commissioners have to have workshops, meet with these groups, understand both sides of it and see if there’s any way to come to a compromise.

And if not, come to a decision — who is it in the best interest for to go in what direction? I can’t, at this point in time, give you an answer saying here’s my position.

What experience prepares you to be a fiscal steward for the county budget?

As a manager of an HOA, we manage our budget. Granted, it doesn’t put a dent in, but it’s the same concept. We looked for areas where we could eliminate, and we redirected money.

You have very high-level people having arguments about how this supposed to be handled.

We need to stop and take a deep breath. Siesta Key is a humongous economic driver for us, and we need to slow down and make sure we get this right.

Why do you think it’s a priority for Sarasota County to retain its youths?

I think Sarasota County or any community that is losing its youths at the rate we’re losing them needs to be absolutely concerned.

I am going to do everything in my power to create more economic diversity here and shift away from hospitality and construction to make sure that my kids can come back to this community with a career, not a job.

Manatee County School Board, District 3 Do elementary schools need school resource officers?

I continue to support the presence of law enforcement officers in our elementary school to provide education, good role modeling and safety.

Normally, I would not think a resource officer should be housed in an elementary school, but on a case-by-case basis it might be prudent.

How would you address schools being at or over capacity?

While several schools are over capacity, we also have a good deal of slack capacity throughout the school system. With school choice, we need to make many of these schools more attractive to students and parents by putting in facility and technology upgrades and attracting and retaining good teachers. At the same time, in certain geographic areas we will need to plan and budget for some new school construction.

If the half-cent sales tax is renewed, how should it be used?

The sales tax is for capital projects. Part of the sales tax revenue will continue to support bonds in place for past capital projects, but approval of the sales tax extension would allow those bonds to be refinanced at a lower rate of interest. Effective management of the sales tax is needed to match the school system’s strategic plan and budgeting to include future school construction and to maintain and upgrade existing facilities to include advances in technology. We might also find it more cost effective to expand certain existing schools instead of new school construction.

How will you address schools being at or over capacity?

I continue to support Superintendent Diana Greene’s longrange plan, which includes first building a new high school in the Parrish area and then a new elementary and middle school in west Manatee County. Her plan also includes rebuilding obsolete schools — e.g. Oneco Elementary — and combining some schools that are under capacity on the elementary level.

As a board member, I was instrumental in requiring that the use of funds from sales taxes and impact fees be subject to review by the district’s audit committee.

How are county schools performing academically?

We are progressing. Dr. Greene is leading us on the right path.

Our graduation rate has climbed significantly over the past five years, and a large majority of our Title I schools increased a grade this past year. We have the best technical college in the nation: award-winning Manatee Technical College.

The biggest story about our academics is our Reading on Grade Level campaign, in which the district has partnered with United Way and other agencies to prepare students for entering school, providing summer educational activities for students to reduce or eliminate the “education slide” that significantly affects students in Title I schools.

If the half-cent sales tax is renewed, how should it be used?

Extending the sales tax will help address the needs, including delayed maintenance and use of portables in our established schools, replace antiquated computer management systems, pay for new schools and buses, and fund other capital needs.

How are county schools performing academically?

I am very concerned with the negative direction of the grades for many of our schools. Over the past four years, it appears that performance is sliding as indicated by the state’s grading system.

How would you address schools that are at or over capacity?

We must continue to work on ensuring all of our schools are of high quality, so that school choice helps to “even out” what can sometimes seem like unequal capacity patterns throughout the county.

We need to ensure our schools with low capacity are run in a way that helps them attract students from other parts of the district where schools are over capacity. One way is to offer special programs at the lowercapacity schools.

This dilemma is also why I strongly support the renewal of the half-cent sales tax. We need a new high school in Parrish, and several other schools need expansion or upgrading.

How are county schools performing academically?

No doubt, our public schools can do better, which is one of the main reasons I’m running. My incumbent opponent believes we should “continue the progress,” but unfortunately, we aren’t seeing progress in the district’s overall grade.

If the half-cent sales tax is renewed, how should it be used?

All proposed projects should be listed for the public to see so there is transparency in the spending. A top priority must be a new high school in Parrish, which will cost approximately $80 million. Impact fees alone can’t get it done.

We also have many schools that need renovations and improvements, which are costly and important. And finally, we need to put in better technology infrastructure in some of our older schools, to ensure that our children are learning in good 21st century classrooms.

While the presidential race saps everyone’s attention, the local races certainly have as great an effect, sometimes greater, on your everyday life than the national elections.

I

t’s probably no surprise that the local primary election race that has garnered the most press and chatter is the one in which the most dung has been slung.

That, of course, would be the Republican race for state Senate District 23, the seat Nancy Detert gave up to come back and become a county commissioner.

And with the avalanche of junk mail that has come from the political action committees of two of the candidates in this race — that of state Rep. Greg Steube and former Rep. Doug Holder — their titfor-tat slams have overshadowed many of the other local races.

But none of those races should be overlooked. School board, county commission and charter review board seats often have as great an effect, sometimes greater, on your everyday life than do the national and state offices.

So this week, the Longboat Observer presents its recommendations for the local and state offices. And as regular readers of this page already expect, our recommendations typically favor candidates who best embrace what we call the freedom philosophy — individual liberty, low taxes, less government intrusion into our lives and laissez-faire capitalism.

To that end, you’ll see in the accompanying box we recommend no Democratic Party candidates. When you read or hear their positions on issues, their political philosophies are predictably similar: more gun control; more taxes, especially in support of redistribution and confiscation of wealth and property in the name of “fairness”; and more, bigger, intrusive government into every facet of your life. Rarely, if ever, do you hear a Democratic candidate state the words “freedom” and “liberty” as his or her guiding principles and philosophy.

Republican candidates, for the most part, are not much better. Too many of these alleged “conservatives” embrace an activist government that picks winners and losers; that dictates from the state capital what must be taught in local classrooms; that subsidizes businesses; or that strips property rights with special-interest zoning ordinances.

So our choices for elective offices, often come down to whoever would do the least harm to liberty.

Nevertheless, hope springs eternal.

Below are our recommendations in key and contentious races. In those that are only listed in the box, our recommendations are the clear standouts.

State Senate-District 23

The constant attacks and truthstretched ads between Rep. Greg Steube and former Rep. Doug Holder are such a turn-off — enough to make you not want to vote for either candidate.

And then there is this: Except for Rick Levine, a Charlotte County financial and tax planner who owns his business, the other four candidates vying for this seat either are or are on track to be career politicians, with each seeking to rise to the next level of office.

Among them, who best embraces the freedom agenda, and which is best for District 23 and Florida?

To the first: Levine has the most private-sector, business experience and would view many of the state issues from the perspective of having lived with the freedom-killing effects of taxation and regulation. But Levine what is probably an insurmountable challenge: He’s an unknown in county political circles and among voters.

To the second: Patterson likely has the widest following among the county’s establishment Republicans and has a well-known record of working to solve problems, rather than grandstanding.

But over her 25 years in public office, Patterson, for our taste, too often has sided with government regulation over

capitalism. Among the Tallahassee lobbyists, Holder is favored over Steube; while Pilon, a moderate-to-right conservative, has the courage to buck House leaders to do what he believed is right.

To be sure, none of these candidates would be a bad choice. All would serve the district acceptably. We recommend: Ray Pilon

Manatee School Board

When you consider the turmoil that has dogged the Manatee County School Board and District over the past four years and the efforts the past two years to recover, this year’s election of two new board members makes it one of the most important elections in the SarasotaManatee region.

Fortunately for Manatee voters, there are solid choices to replace the retiring District 1 school board member, Robert Gause. And incumbent District 3 board member Dave “Watchdog” Miner has two formidable and qualified challengers in longtime Manatee banker Charles Conoley and business woman-civic leader Misty Servia.

Manatee voters can — and should — be strategic about their choices.

In District 1, first-time candidate Xtavia Bailey, a well-regarded businesswoman and long-time civic volunteer, has widespread community support. She would bring a valuable perspective and strong community passion to the board.

But Edward Viltz has the widest breadth of business and education experience and accomplishments. Among them: serving as COO of a D.C.-based IT company that grew from $26 million to $68 million during his watch and for four years the first CEO of the Public Interest Registry, a nonprofit that grew and managed 5 million .ORG domain names on the internet.

The former general counsel at PIR told us: “Based on my personal experience …

[Ed] is of sound character and eminently qualified for the post of school board

member. He has considerable experience in the field of education, and I urge you to endorse him.” What’s more, since coming to Manatee County in 2009, Viltz has served as a faculty member and consultant at the Dream Success Charter School. He helped develop and implement a strategic plan that brought the school’s performance from an “F” in 2010 to an “A” in 2012.

In District 3, incumbent Miner has drawn similar candidates, both of whom would fit the needs of the board to continue the turnaround without strife.

Conoley would add to the board’s financial expertise; Servia would add a civic leader who understands the importance of the board communicating effectively with all of the district’s constituents.

Strategically, voters, the board and district would do well choosing a combination of candidates who would bring a balance of strengths to the board.

We recommend: Xtavia Bailey and Charles Conoley; or Edward Viltz and Misty Servia.

State Representative

District 72 — The Republican contest for Ray Pilon’s seat features an experienced CEO, Alex Miller, and an experienced broadcast journalist, John Hill.

Miller also has experience in public office, having been elected to the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board.

While the two candidates have similar conservative convictions, Miller’s nearly 15 years of experience as CEO of Mercedes Medical ($33 million revenues) and involvement as a director of nonprofits gives her firsthand knowledge of the cause-and-effect of legislation. Miller is an astute businesswoman who would raise the level of analytical intelligence in the statehouse. We recommend: Alex Miller District 73 — This is a tough one. Joe Gruters is a long-time leader of the Republican Party of Florida (now vice chair) and Sarasota (chair) and the co-chair of Donald Trump’s Florida campaign. It’s somewhat of an odd position — the No. 2 man, a true insider, of a party ruled by the establishment and yet the co-leader of the anti-establishment candidate’s presidential campaign and a leading fundraiser/campaigner for outsider Gov. Rick Scott.

Running against Gruters is a firsttime candidate who is the epitome of a principled, small-government, Tea Party conservative — Steve Vernon. Vernon has his bona fides as well: president of the Lakewood Ranch Republican Club; previously president of the Tea Party of Manatee; member of the Manatee Republicans’ executive committee.

Of the two, Vernon is a purer advocate of the freedom philosophy than is Gruters. We love this: “[The Republican Party] “is too much about money and power and privilege and less about individual freedoms,” says Vernon.

At the same time, years of loyalty, effort and commitment to a cause matter. We recommend: Joe Gruters.

Sarasota School Board

Incumbent Caroline Zucker has served on the Sarasota County School Board for 18 years — from 1992-2000 and from 2006 to present. Unquestionably, she has been devoted to doing what she believed was best for the students, parents and taxpayers of Sarasota County.

But her opponent, Teresa Mast, 50, president of the Sarasota general contracting firm of Davin Group Inc., represents another step in the transition of the school board to a new generation of leaders who are committed to greater board transparency and community engagement. (Board member Bridget Ziegler was the first in 2014.)

Beach and Tennis Resort is next. Unicorp is resurrecting and enhancing the once great beach and tennis resort that is grandfathered for 237 tourism units. Unicorp’s plans for a 180-room hotel and 180 resort condominiums would require 137 additional tourist units from the town’s tourism unit pool.

If you are counting, that’s at least 481 new tourism units already in the works not counting the 165 still in the town’s tourism unit pool.

Is yet another hotel needed in this less-than-desirable location?

Not if you can count, and not if you can multiply the certain impact to seasonal traffic gridlock.

2) A hotel is not the best use for the properties in question.

We have every confidence that market forces will eventually take care of the too long unoccupied, too long overpriced gas station and bank building at the corner of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The proposed hotel shoehorned onto the small parcels between the current Whitney Beach Plaza and Broadway is tremendous overkill for the modest problems it is supposed to remedy.

We agree with experts and the current owner of Whitney

Your Aug. 4, article, “The Faces of Floridays,” did little to enlighten Longboat voters about what the upcoming Aug. 30 referendum is actually about.

Your article notes that, “Although Floridays hasn’t settled on a final form for the north end hotel and beach club, manager James Brearley does have a specific vision in his head.”

Thus, just weeks before the referendum, voters still have no idea what Floridays might actually build.

There are three essential reasons to vote “no” on the density referendum Aug. 30: 1) There is no compelling need for another hotel on Longboat Key. On Oct. 1, the Zota Beach Resort will open on the former Hilton site, with 187 tourism units, 85 of them from the town’s tourism pool.

Next spring, the Resort at Longboat Key Club is expected to file a site plan for a greatly expanded resort complex, including an additional 259room hotel, plus 93 condominium/villa units. (Editor’s note: These rooms would not be part of the town’s tourism pool.)

A redeveloped Colony

Beach Plaza that low-density residential with a light mix of commercial is a far better use for this site.

3) The remaining 165 tourism units should be allocated to the Colony.

To achieve its goals for a comprehensive revitalization of the Colony, Unicorp is in direct competition with Floridays for these units. These units would be better allocated to a five-star Colony resort on a 17.3-acre prime beachfront location rather than the Floridays hotel on just 2.62 acres with no beachfront and at a main highway choke point.

For reasons of quality, location, compatibility and traffic, the better choice is obvious: the Colony.

protect our neighborhood from bad development by approving bad development that it describes as “community driven.” The return address of that outside-the-community drivel seems to match the address of developers whom most members of our community hope to drive out of town by voting no.

(Translation: “Scram!”)

The funnier mailing is a scare tactic that refers to Longboat Key as “our town … our neighborhoods … our island …our community… ” It comes from unknown persons whose address is in Jensen Beach. If the people of Jensen Beach want to ruin their own residential neighborhoods and environment instead of ours by building an oversized and ill-situated hotel there, I would be happy to share the return addresses on those expensively printed but silly postcards.

P.S. The Longboat Observer tells us the Colony will be re-created as a new hotel by Unicorp Development. We hope that such a great new Longboat Key hotel project can turn the ill-begotten Bishops Bayou hotel mess into a “unicorpse.”

We have owned on the north end of the Key since 2003, living here full time since 2014.

What initially attracted us to this part of the Key was the quieter atmosphere and less congested space.

Over the past 13 years, we have seen the traffic increase and the entire Key become congested with more cars.

It used to be easy to cross the bridge to Coquina Beach and circle up Cortez Road to get to Sarasota if the traffic was bad at St. Armands Circle. This is no longer the case.

The north end of Longboat Key can have traffic backed up worse than the south end.

In spite of this increase, there is still an attractive feel to this area, which will be ruined by more traffic.

We can still walk in the Village and walk on the beach without too much difficulty caused by all the cars and trucks that use the Gulf of Mexico Drive as a driving route.

We strongly urge all voters to vote “no” on the proposed zoning density amendment.

AquaPalooza: No troubled waters Longboat Key officials, residents say boat bash was a model of decorum.

Despite pre-event concerns that AquaPalooza would be too rowdy, the sandbar-based bash near Jewfish Key stirred no troubled waters Saturday.

One Monday email to Town Hall complimented Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming and Fire Chief Paul Dezzi for proactively containing any possible shenanigans.

“Your folks did a terrific job at the Saturday AquaPalooza Jewfish Key sandbar party,” read an email signed by Tom and Kim Freiwald. “The persistent, proactive and friendly interaction of the many law enforcement, fire rescue and (U.S. Coast Guard) units, with the many boats on and

around the sandbar, kept things under control.”

The Longboat Key Police Department issued no tickets during Aquapalooza, according to Cumming, who was on-site.

“We think it was a success on all sides,” Cumming said. “As far as the police are concerned, we didn’t have any problems.”

Dezzi said one woman was treated and released, possibly after being overcome by too much sun. There were no issues with loud noise or alcohol abuse from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., he said.

“It went very well,” Dezzi said.

“We expected more than what happened out there.”

A few residents expressed concerns about loud music and potential cocktail-induced trespassing before the event, which attracted roughly 40 boats. The Freiwald email said demands on law enforcement were tame.

“Kim and I particularly enjoyed watching law enforcement vessels retrieving wayward inflatable rafts and rings, and then return-

ing to the scrum to try to find the owners (mostly the kids),” the email read. “Well done, and thanks to you and your teams for the great job you always do for LBK.” After sponsor MarineMax Sarasota christened AquaPalooza “the largest party on the water” with “sunshine, great friends, live music and more,” some Longboat residents said they were dismayed by the prospect of a noisy party on the water. The concerns proved unfounded.

“Absolutely, it couldn’t have gone better,” said Ashley Wawrzyniak with Marine Max. “There were no accidents. No one got crazy. We were all under control.

Everyone was pretty great. The sound was perfect. We didn’t have any complaints.”

The most lasting ripple from AquaPalooza may be the need for Longboat Key to look at its public-forum permitting, according to two town officials.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said the permitting process might need some tweaking.

“I think yes,” Florensa said.

“Sometimes we cannot account for every single event we have.

It’s a learning system for us. We could probably improve our permitting process and our forms to add more specific information.”

Hein said the Longboat Key Town Commission will likely discuss any necessary revisions to public-forums permitting at a workshop in the near future.

“Tell me about your Canadian smuggling operation,” I said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

“Bringing them in on your pirate boat,” I said.

“The boat is out of commission,” he said.

“What’s wrong with it?”

“Flat tire.”

“You don’t need a tire to float a boat,” I said.

“Our boat doesn’t have a bottom,” he said. “No floor. Open to the highway.”

“Then how do you make it float?”

“That’s the point, Lieutenant. It doesn’t float.”

“You work for your government?” I asked incredulously.

“Why are you down here?”

“The weather’s nice.”

“That’s not the only reason.”

“No. I’m trying to stop the flow of Canadians.”

“You’re helping us keep them out?”

“Oh, no,” he said. “Some of them feel unwanted in Florida, so they decide to go back to Canada.

We’re trying to keep them here.

We’ve got enough people to worry about without some of them getting indoctrinated here and going back to Canada to cause trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“Some of them have started fertilizing their hair,” he said.

“Even the bald ones. We don’t put up with that stuff in Canada.

Jeremiah grinned, spit on the agent, and removed his foot. The Broadway brouhaha was over.

In the end, Jeremiah and Scheherazade moved in with Charlie Goins. Hooters went back to chicken wings, disregarding the complaints lodged by the Village Chicken Keepers Coalition. The tollbooth remained at the southernmost crosswalk where the New Yorkers hung out ready to

The Town Commission was still spending taxpayer money with abandon. Experts were being hired to come to conclusions that no one cared about. The residents were complaining about whatever slight they dreamed up. Dogs were still banned from the beach, but camels were allowed because the Town Commission was afraid of animal rights lawyers. A parade was held to honor Jeremiah and Scheherazade, and with some difficulty, they were shoehorned into the back seat of a convertible next to the mayor.

The islanders were happy.

Longboat had indeed remained Longboat.

The homeowner told police he had planned for a contractor to fix the seawall and thanked the officer for the prompt service.

RAIN DELAY 12:29 p.m. — 500 block of Kingfisher Lane Suspicious Vehicle: A woman reported a suspicious vehicle parked in a vacant lot. She believed its occupants were casing the neighborhood in preparation to commit a crime. Officers discovered the men were surveyors waiting for the weather to clear to continue their work on the lot where they were parked.

Daniel Mahoney, 94, of Longboat Key, died July 28.

Born May 8, 1922, in the lower east side of New York City to the late Stephen and Elizabeth Mahoney, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he met Viola, to whom he was married for 64 years.

The couple lived in Colonia, N.J., until moving to Longboat Key in 2005. While living in New Jersey, Mr. Mahoney was vice president of sales of medical and industrial gases and equipment for Liquid Carbonic.

STAYCATION 11:36 a.m. — 600 block of Norton Street Suspicious Circumstance: A woman reported that after her mailman told her “welcome back,” she noticed her mail had been forwarded to an unknown address in Delray Beach for the previous two weeks. The woman said she had been home for the entire week and didn’t authorize anyone to forward her mail. She told police she did not discover any fraudulent activity in her financial account, but officers told her to contact the Social Security Administration.

POPPIN’ BOTTLES 10:49 p.m. — 6700 block of GMD Larceny: A woman reported that she believed her home care worker stole pain medication from her bathroom counter. She told police she left a bottle of the pills on the counter and another in her medicine cabinet; the former was missing after her caretaker left. She said he was spending an unusual amount of time in the bathroom. An officer discovered a bottle of the same medication on the bathroom counter, but the woman said that was her backup, which was previously in the medicine cabinet.

Upon opening the medicine cabinet, police found another bottle of the pain medication.

Why did volunteers find fewer scallops at this year’s search?

W

hen it comes to monitoring the water quality and ecosystem of Sarasota Bay, scientists look to scallops as indicators of the bay’s overall health.

Historical trends show that scallops were widely present in the bay until humans started developing the land around it, according to Sarasota Bay Watch President Larry Stults.

That’s why the group’s annual scallop search is so important. It’s a way to help scientists monitor the local scallop population while also bringing people closer to the water.

“It’s a way to get a face in the water and get an intimate connection with the bay,” Stults said.

On Aug. 13, Sarasota Bay Watch hosted its eighth annual scallop search at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.

At 9 a.m., volunteers departed in their boats. For the next three hours, about 140 people dove,

snorkeled and swam to seek out the bivalve mollusks that live amongst the seagrass on the bottom of the bay.

Before volunteers left to search, Stults warned that not everyone would find a scallop, although he said participants still might see creatures like crabs, starfish and stingrays.

When participants returned, they enjoyed lunch while sharing what they found in the water.

In years past, the event was held at Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub, but due to construction at the restaurant, the Sailing Squadron hosted it.

When volunteers found live scallops while snorkeling around the bay, they simply counted them and left them undisturbed during the no-harvest event.

Although volunteers found eight live scallops — down from 31 in 2015 and 40 in 2014 — Sarasota Bay Watch Program Director Ronda Ryan said multiple factors could explain the low count.

There was a bout with red tide last year, and the water was murky due to recent rain.

Since the first scallop search in 2008, the group has seen the health of the bay improve, according to co-founder Rusty Chinnis. Over the last four years, Sarasota Bay Watch has placed 80 million larvae in the bay, in addition to 120,000 juvenile scallops.

Sarasota Bay Watch is now in its sixth year of its 10-year restoration initiative.

Stults said volunteers at the event share a common passion: protecting the bay.

“They really come together around our natural environment,” he said.

Campers sail through summer

W

ith their life jackets buckled and the wind fluttering against them, young sailors headed out on the bay during a typical day at Sarasota Youth Sailing summer camp.

During the camp, participants learn the ins and outs of sailing, including steering and rigging, along with life lessons on teamwork, respect and confidence.
