YOUR TOWN STAN SINGS HIS SWAN SONG
KATZ AT 100:
‘I’ve loved every day’ As Florence Katz turns 100, she says she still has plenty to do. KRISTEN HERHOLD STAFF WRITER
Longboat Key recently said goodbye to one of its favorite feathery friends, Stan the swan. Stan and Wendy made up one of the Key’s two mating pairs and were raising three cygnets, all 2 months old, when Stan died. “It was a shock to me,” swan keeper David Novak said. After noticing Stan was having trouble breathing, Novak took Stan to a vet. After receiving antibiotics and hydration, Stan seemed to be doing better. The vet was going to keep Stan to monitor him for a week, and Novak was planning on picking him up July 1, but the swan began declining and became lethargic and died the day before. Sully and Susie are now the island’s only breeding pair. “I wanted to get down to one breeding pair, and sadly this in essence has taken me down to this,” Novak said.
On Thursday, Florence Katz will learn whether she has accomplished one of her many goals: seeing her face on a Smuckers jar during the “Today” show in honor of her 100th birthday. “We’re hoping she gets on the show,” Judy Vigder, Katz’s daughter, said. “We think that would make this birthday perfect.” But regardless, she’s already accomplished the goal of which she’s most proud:
“Raising my family was my No. 1 accomplishment,” Katz said. “They’re my pride and joy, and it’s a wonderful, wonderful group. I feel so fortunate to have lived long enough to see my great-grandchildren be well on their way to a successful life.” Katz’s entire family will be in Sarasota to celebrate her birthday, and more than 150 people are expected at her party. They’ll celebrate a 4-foot-8 dynamic dame who still volunteers twice a week and has earned numerous accolades for her service. “Florence is an inspiration to so many of us, and we’re so grateful for her joie de vivre, her vitality SEE KATZ PAGE 7A

Florence Katz is often referred to as a former Longboat Key resident. However, she has never lived on the Key. Katz and her husband, Louis, moved in 1969 to Lido Key, and she now lives at the Sarasota Bay Club.
