Power outage sparks concern A 10-hour power outage July 7 sheds light on the difficulty of repairing buried wires.
Plymouth Harbour Executive Assistant Sandy Taylor’s son, Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Taylor, USMC, sang the National Anthem July 5, at the Red Bull Global Rallycross at the Marine Corps Air Station in New River, N.C. It was the first racing series held on an active military base. A Marine in New River’s chaplain office, who had heard Taylor sing at his church in Jacksonville, N.C., recommended Taylor to sing at the opening ceremonies. Taylor is a Middle East cryptologic linguist. He is part of the Second Radio Battalion in Camp Leujeune, N.C., and has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has a wife and two sons. “I’m delighted he has kept his joy of singing from childhood through adulthood,” Sandy Taylor said.

He thought it would be back on by the time they got home from dinner around 9 p.m. But the power didn’t come back on until 1:38 a.m. “I was shocked,” Landau said. “We’ve never been without power for that long.” He wasn’t the only one who was frustrated. Commissioner Pat Zunz wants the town to take the lead in keeping Longboat Key’s four-legged citizens on a tighter leash when it comes to leash law requirements. At the Longboat Key Town Commission’s July 6 regular meeting, Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale brought language modifying and relaxing the town’s leash law to make it comparable to restrictions in Manatee and Sarasota counties. But the commission reigned in the town attorney, directing her to keep the town’s leash law as-is. SEE LEASH LAWS PAGE 3A
