New dispatch map to help first responders The new map breaks Jewfish Key and Greer Island into eight sectors to help first responders better understand where to go.

the north end of Longboat Key. Starting July 13, the dispatch center began categorizing Greer Island and Jewfish Key into eight sectors instead of trying to direct officers to individual points in the entire area.

Longboat Key Capt. Bob Bourque wrote a memo to interim Police Chief George Turner and Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino explaining the new process.

“When a caller contacts police dispatch and reports an incident at Greer Island or Jewfish Key, a sector map will automatically populate once the dispatcher enters either Greer Island or Jewfish Key into their database,” Bourque wrote. “The caller can then describe the problem and

provide the corresponding sector number, which will be sent to the radio dispatcher who will also be viewing the sector map. The radio dispatcher will dispatch the call and provide the responding officer(s) with both the location and the sector number.”

A dispatcher will typically ask a caller for the specific intersection of the incident.

The goal of the new sectors is to provide callers a reliable way to report incidents and to direct officers to the location as efficiently as possible.

Before the new changes took effect, Lands End Drive resident Pat Beavers described a June 24 incident in the water behind his home when a storm was

approaching a vessel in distress.

“They were in a little boat, and the motor was dead,” Beavers said. “They had no life jackets or anything, so I called the police.

“It went to Sarasota (County). They kept asking for a cross street, and I’m telling them: ‘I can’t give you one. These people are out on the water out on Longboat Pass.’ And it took an hour to figure it out.”

A Longboat Key police officer finally arrived at Beavers’ home.

“I finally walked him out on my dock to where the people were,” Beavers said.

Beavers and fellow north-end resident Cyndi Seamon said they believe the new system will be helpful.

“Now I think it’ll be so much easier for everybody if we can use that as a reference,” Seamon said.

The town is expected to provide mapping information to dispatch, police personnel, beach volunteers and residents in the area. The information is expected to help the caller in describing the location of the incident and help the responding officer in finding it.

Seamon said she recommended people save the map on their phones to have as a reference. She also mentioned the importance for dispatchers to know Greer Island is also often nicknamed Beer Can Island.

“That should be in their notes, too,” Seamon said.

While Sarasota County dispatch relays the information to Longboat Key first responders, the town used to handle 911 calls several years ago.

In 2016, the town switched over its 911 dispatch service from inhouse dispatchers and Manatee County 911 service to Sarasota County’s Emergency Operations Center. In recent years, the town and the county have worked to improve communication between call-takers based in offices on Cattlemen Road and Longboat Key residents, who are often familiar with local landmarks.

In 2019, call-takers and dispatchers visited the town and toured some of its landmarks in an effort to better learn what town residents might be talking about when on the 911 line. Months later, groups of Longboat Key first responders visited the county 911 call center to learn more about how that operation works.

ven before their Halyard Lane home was built, Kathryn and Ron Lee fell in love with the property’s canal-front view, even though there was already a house on it.

A house they weren’t particularly interested in.

Years ago, the couple split time between their former Longboat Key home on Birdie Lane and the Northeast.

“We were gradually spending more time here, and we find this lot with a small house on it,” Ron Lee said of the land, which once featured a home last valued at $84,000. “It was derelict, and it was clearly a tear down. You would buy it just for the dirt and build a new house.”

The Lees say they’ve met several Longboaters who have visited, bought a home on the island and then decided to buy “a better place” on the same piece of land.

“We’ve always lived in traditional homes, and we then began to envision maybe doing something different and building a modern one here,” Kathryn Lee said.

They’re not alone. On an island with hardly a vacant lot or open space, demolition is often a consideration for new home Since 2020, the town Planning, Zoning and Building Department has approved 36 permits for single-family homes or mobile homes. Of those, 24 were replacement structures, accounting for $22.2 million of the $28.94 million total.

The Lees bought their Halyard Lane property in May 2013 for $2.2 million but didn’t move in until 2019. It took several years for crews to finish building the threebedroom, three-bathroom home.

“If I look at what we paid for the land, what we spent on professional fees and what we spent on building, I’d have been surprised if there was much capital gain to be made, frankly,” Ron Lee said.

“That has proved to be a hell of a lot better than my expectations, but we built it to live in it.”

The Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s website shows the 2021 just-market value of the Lee’s current home at about $3.88 million. Popular real estate sites indicate a higher estimated value.

struction rather than resales.

“I think ever since COVID, we’ve seen a movement afoot toward the single-family home and perhaps in preference to condos because people want the kind of sanctuary of their own home rather than a condominium, at least during the COVID period,” she said.

Dominick said many homeowners make such upgrades as a home office or an exercise area.

She also mentioned how FEMA’s 50% rule forces many homeowners to elevate their homes if they want to make significant updates.

“That requires you to elevate if the improvements you’re making are in excess of 50% of the value excluding the land, and it doesn’t take all that much before you cross that rule, and then you have to elevate, so you have basically a new structure being built,” Dominick said.

Some of that added value is driving up the town’s overall values.

The town’s year-to-year property tax values rebounded this year after falling in 2020 for the first time since 2013.

As new homes get built, the rate of homesteaded properties has stayed relatively flat, indicating

that vacation homes are going up elsewhere, and town projects are meant as primary homes.

Town Manager Tom Harmer said the town’s 2,995 homesteaded properties are similar to what the Key has seen in previous years.

For example, Longboat had 2,956 homesteaded properties in 2014.

“When you went back and looked, say, six or seven years ago, we were in the same situation,” Harmer said. “So some communities, because of the way development has happened and hotel houses and things like that, the number of residences that are homesteaded have gone down, and they’ve lost voters, and it’s kind of changed the character of the community.

“We’ve been pretty darn stable over the last six to eight years with our primary residences, and I think that’s good, and it’s not a total surprise.”

The Lees are among the Longboaters who now call the island home on a full-time basis.

They say the building process was worth it.

“It was wonderful just moving in here,” Kathryn Lee said. “It was quite a long and involved, … building a house. It has a lot of fun aspects to it, but it has a lot of stress. Prices go up, timelines extend, things that you’d thought you’d agreed upon aren’t quite understood.”

Dominick recommended having a thorough understanding of the costs associated with the building process. She mentioned the high demand for homes, the scarcity of resources to build them, code requirements and FEMA requirements.

“I know of one project where the cost was going to be so significantly more than the homeowners hoped that they stopped after demolition was done of the interior of their old house, and now they have it on the market trying to sell it,” Dominick said.

“The house is just a shell, so making sure you understand all the costs is probably the single most important thing.”

Dominick also said it’s important for owners to understand the timeline of their builds because it takes time to see a return on investment.

“The second thing is understanding how many years you’re going to have to own the property in order to potentially recover your investment,” Dominick said. “Not to over-improve your property. … In other words, make sure that your selection of finishes are in line with the neighborhood, and you’re not choosing the most expensive of everything because you may not recover your investment.”

TEARING DOWN TO BUILD UP Here are three examples of property sales that resulted in home demolitions and replacement homes.

600 block of Putting Green Lane Property was purchased by Luxury Waterfront Homes LLC in 2019 for $2.4 million. The land was most recently valued by Sarasota County at $1.9 million. The most recent valuation of the home that once stood there (2018) was $137,800.

A building permit was OK’d this year by the town for a new home with a construction value of $1.75 million.

500 block of Harbor Cove Drive Property was purchased by VJHC Development Corp. in 2020 for $2.7 million. The most recent tax valuations for the land by Sarasota County was $2.3 million, and a $490,000 home was demolished last year. A building permit was OK’d by the town for a new home with a construction value of $1.8 million.

6200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Property was purchased by Randall S. Welch in 2020 for $4.85 million. The most recent tax valuation for the land by Manatee County placed the land at $2.8 million. A home valued in 2020 at $1.4 million is no longer standing. A building permit by was OK’d by the town for a replacement home with a construction value of $2.05 million.

There are 36 patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital with COVID-19, including seven in the intensive care unit — an increase from one month ago, the hospital said.

The hospital shared an update Monday with information on local COVID-19 trends and commentary from Manuel Gordillo, Sarasota Memorial’s medical director of infection prevention and control. The hospital said it had single-digit COVID-19 cases a month ago and zero patients in the ICU with the disease.

“It rapidly escalates,” Gordillo said. “Over a period of about two weeks, two and a half, three weeks, we’ve gone from three patients in the hospital to the current upper 30s.”

Five new cases were attributed to Longboat Key between July 4-17, after one case since June 6.

There was no information on the severity of those Longboat cases, but the Health Department says Longboat is generally considered fully vaccinated. More than 7,300 people from Longboat have received at least one vaccination.

On Monday, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan announced he tested positive for COVID-19. Buchanan

said that he was fully vaccinated and that he was experiencing mild symptoms.

The hospital said the majority of hospitalizations are among individuals who have not been fully vaccinated, which is in line with national data. Of nearly 100 admitted patients with COVID-19 at SMH, six were a “breakthrough infection” of individuals who had completed a series of vaccinations at least 14 days prior to testing positive.

The hospital said many of the admitted patients are younger than those hospitalized in 2020 and early 2021, including some patients in their 30s. Gordillo said locally, more than 80% of senior citizens have received both vaccinations, but older individuals who are unvaccinated remain the population most vulnerable to severe effects from COVID-19.

Gordillo said an increase in cases is occurring across Florida and that the hospital believes the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus is contributing to that phenomenon in Sarasota. In the week ending July 15, the Florida Department of Health reported 504 new cases in Sarasota County at a positivity rate of 8.6%. In the week ending June 17, the state reported 95 new local cases at a 1.9% positivity rate.

The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County is offering walk-in vaccinations from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at its downtown Sarasota office, located at 2200 Ringling Blvd.

SCAT’s new on-demand service catches on with Longboaters

Longboat Town Commissioner Penny Gold is already looking forward to her next trip on Sarasota County’s mobility-on-demand service.

“I’ll be using it again, and I hope they keep up the good work,” Gold said. “And I hope people appreciate the discount they’re receiving for using the service and tip well.”

Gold often took Sarasota County Area Transit’s No. 18 bus, which traveled between Longboat Key to mainland, but that service was cut, in favor of an on-demand system that launched June 1. She said she prefers the new ondemand service.

“It seems to be a much more efficient way of servicing the citizens who live on the Key because, as I said, the buses only ran sporadically and were not always timely,” Gold said.

Sarasota County spokesperson Drew Winchester said that from June 5-27, 941 passenger trips either started or ended on Longboat Key. Winchester said from June 1 to July 11, SCAT had a total of 6,861 trips throughout the county.

Why did they do it? Sarasota County Area Transit cut multiple fixed-routes in an effort to save about $4 million. The new system still employs some bus routes on well-used corridors, but elsewhere, such as on the barrier islands, a new ondemand service now is in place.

How it works: Using the app, a ride from your home to your final destination can be arranged within minutes within the boundaries of the zone that includes Longboat, St. Armands and Lido keys and a portion of downtown Sarasota. Other zones include Siesta Key and south county communities.

If your destination is beyond the barrier island zone, the ride will connect you to a trunk-line bus route.

SCAT charges riders ages 6 to 79 a fare of $1.25 per ride. It is free for anyone age 80 and older and for children ages 5 and younger.

The county is also allowing users to get their first five rides for free.

Sarasota County’s on-demand service runs from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Monday through Saturday. It runs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.

North Transit to get feedback on the demographics of people who utilize the new service.

“One of the things that I think we’ll be looking at going forward is market segments,” Grogg said.

“Who uses what services and for what purposes going forward?

“So is that workers of those locations? And I’m just going by the location and time of day and that there’s kind of a paired return trip, so that’s a bit of a projection.”

“The town of Longboat Key is interested in and has been talking with both MCAT and Sarasota County about how there might be, in the future, a single service provider for the whole Key, so it’s one service for people to go the entire length of the Key,” Grogg said.

If Longboat Key were to adopt a one-county transit system for the entire island, it would likely need approval from the Town Commission, the Sarasota County Commission and the Manatee County Commission.

“MCAT provided ridership data of how many trips they provide now,” Grogg said. “We used that information to project, ‘Well, how much would that cost us if we provided that service?’ Really, it’s a matter of some kind of contractual agreement to have that funding cover that service.”

Key destination points for SCAT’s service are Longboat Key Club on the south end of the island and the Publix at the Shoppes of Bay Isles.

“It looked like, likely, that that was work-related trips,” Grogg said. “Of course, again, I would give the caveat: I don’t know that for sure without asking the riders.”

Grogg noted how Longboat Key’s Publix location is where riders can transfer to Manatee County Area Transit service to go farther north. MCAT does allow riders to request a shuttle, but it must be done 24 hours in advance.

The county line a few hundred feet north of Bayfront Park is the farthest north SCAT’s ondemand service will take a rider.

Gold said she believed MCAT could consider a similar ondemand service in the future.

“I think after this has a little bit more time and a longer history, I’m sure they’ll be looking at something similar,” Gold said.

Recycling rates rise in August

ongboat Key will increase its recycling rates starting in August as part of a three-year contract extension with Waste Management Inc. The agreement includes a $1.03 prorated increase for the singlefamily residential and multifamily commercial monthly recycling rates.

“This was originally a sevenyear initial term that is expiring, and in that agreement, there (were) provisions for two renewals,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said. “This is the first opportunity for renewal.”

The town’s agreement with Waste Management for recycling and trash collection now expires June 30, 2024.

The increased rates start Aug. 1.

The town and Waste Management will then continue under the contract’s terms of July 1 every year thereafter.

Sounds cool, but R-22 has a problem…

First used in air conditioning in the 1950s, R-22 became the most common refrigerant for air conditioning systems everywhere. However, it was discovered that it is an ozonedepleting substance, prompting an R-22 phaseout for all new appliances and home systems.

Just last year, the Environmental Protection Agency banned the refrigerant from being made in the United States or imported because of its harmful environmental impact.

As a result, manufacturers of A/C equipment redesigned their systems to accommodate R410A, an ozone-safe refrigerant.

Should you be concerned?

If your A/C system was installed before 2010, there’s a high probability it uses R-22, or Freon, refrigerant. If you have an R-22 unit, you will have some choices to make. The ban doesn’t require

you to replace your system, so your current, existing equipment is still permitted to receive the phased-out refrigerant as long as there is an available supply of recycled R-22. However, as Freon becomes scarcer, the price will skyrocket. So, beyond the environmental damage your R-22 unit causes, the ongoing costs you’ll incur to keep your old system running will continue to rise.

If your cooling system uses R-22, you have three options: 1. Continue having your existing system serviced and recharged with Freon when needed, for as long as it’s available.

2. Retrofit your system to run on a Freon alternative.

3. Replace your A/C with a new, environmentally friendly cooling system.

Plus, a Florida law passed in 2020 also requires new contracts have some language added that requires waste collectors to “make the best efforts possible to reduce recyclable contamination.”

In November 2014, the company transitioned to single-stream recycling from its dual-stream system. Waste Management replaced the red and blue bins with 65-gallon wheeled carts.

The single-stream method allows customers to place all recycling items in one cart, eliminating the need for sorting materials.

Earlier this year, the 1,524 Longboat households that responded to the town’s annual citizen survey indicated they were pleased with Waste Management’s service. Residents gave a 93% satisfaction rating.

Waste Management makes its collections on Mondays and Thursdays in Longboat Key. Brownman said the town spoke with other municipalities that use different services recycling and trash collection. However, he said the town is satisfied with Waste Management.

In May, Waste Management Government Affairs Manager Bill Gresham wrote Brownman a letter about the impacts. Gresham said China adopted new standards in 2017 that “have had a devastating impact on the recycling industry.”

“The biggest impact of this standard was that it established a new quality specification of 0.3% contamination by weight for any imported wastepaper,” Gresham wrote about paper recyclables.

“The prior standard had been 10% contamination.”

China also increased its specifications for plastics.

Governments as developers The strategy is to build a venue for farmers markets, concerts and art festivals, with the hope donors and taxpayers eventually will support a cultural and community center. Hope is never a good strategy.

W

hat is it about elected commissioners and representatives that they all want to be landowners and developers with other people’s (taxpayers’) money?

Longboat Key commissioners are no exception. Ever since the late Vice Mayor David Brenner advocated that the town purchase Joe Wolfer and Howard Rooks’ properties behind Chase Bank near Publix, Longboat commissioners have been fixated on developing a town center.

We saw the latest iteration of designs last week in the Longboat Observer — including a park setting with a covered stage, pedestrian walkways and promenades, one of the historical Whitney cottages tucked in a corner, two (so far undesignated) buildings, and lush canopy trees.

It’s a design perfectly suited to accommodate what 80% to 95% of respondents said in a Longboat citizens survey they would attend if offered — a farmers market, art shows, craft festivals and outdoor concerts.

It all sounds great, looks great.

But here we are again. Commissioners are hoping the town can find a benefactor who will donate $500,000 or $600,000 to complete the stage in exchange for naming rights.

That’s certainly far less than the $13 million they were seeking three years ago. After all, this is just a placeholder idea. The strategy is to spend $100,000 or so, maybe $500,000 of taxpayer money to accommodate farmers markets, outdoor art shows and concerts to generate traffic at the center. The idea is to show Longboaters that the farmers market, art shows and concerts are such a great idea that some private benefactors, the Sarasota County Commission and, likely, Longboat taxpayers will be convinced there should be an arts, education and community

It takes vision, right?

We’d like to be an optimist for all this; it would indeed be great if the vision unfolded as dreamed. But it’s also difficult not to be a cynic and skeptic, especially when you consider the track record of governments when they become developers.

You know the way these things go — government creep. It will start out small and gradually grow into an ongoing town operating expense: maintenance of the park and stage, management of events (scheduling; approving permits and collecting fees; police help with parking, traffic and safety) and a town staffer or two to administer whatever activities do come about.

There is no question that if this concept were to become reality, it would be a nice amenity. We remember, for instance, when the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and this newspaper sponsored Concerts in the Park in Joan M. Durante Park.

They were nice Sunday afternoon events — people sitting

on blankets and in lawn chairs, enjoying jazz and big band concerts. There was no stage or bandshell; the musicians played under rented tents. A stage and bandshell certainly would raise the quality of such events.

There’s also that side of us that thinks about the St. Armands Circle Park. The St. Armands Association is constantly wrestling with the city of Sarasota over when and how that park can be used and the fees charged to the users — to the point that some Circle landowners and merchants want to buy the park to get out from under the bureaucracy of the city.

But that won’t happen here.

Right.

Is there a better alternative to what’s being proposed? It’s hard to imagine at this point the town commissioners giving up and the two properties reverting to private-sector owners.

You know how these things go.

Governments rarely sell land they buy.

But in lieu of the commissioners’ town center vision, we have

It doesn’t matter what the legislation might be. The minute any Republican-dominated state legislature changes its state’s voting laws, presumably, to thwart fraud or add safeguards by, say, requiring voter identification, citizenship or the outlawing of ballot harvesting, the left goes bananas.

Voter suppression!

But here’s a thought: Why should voting be easy?

Two bromides come to mind: n You’ve heard wise people say: When an endeavor is difficult, it’s all the more worthwhile. n Or, when something is free, it typically is overused and abused.

You can say that about voting.

The easier it is to vote, the less it is valued, and the more likely there will be abuse.

Perhaps compare open voting for everyone to the famous “tragedy of the commons.”

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

When you make pasture land free for the common good, for instance, it is always overgrazed, abused and quickly destroyed.

Now think of voting and elections. When they are open and easy for anyone, with few required qualifications or boundaries, voting as a sacred right and elections as one of the most important ingredients of a democratic republic are both devalued.

When voting is easy, instead of voting to elect candidates who are committed to the Constitution and securing our rights to life, liberty and property and protecting us against fraud, violence and plunder, voting and elections become a system full of “trimmers” and skullduggery for power.

“Trimmers” are the politicians who will do and say whatever it takes to win, to be the most popular, to promise the most

free stuff. The skullduggery is manifested in how the votes are rounded up.

If qualifying to vote is made more difficult, yes, that would suppress votes. But the value of a person’s vote, the integrity of elections and perhaps the quality and honesty of candidates would rise.

More difficult qualifications for voting, to an extent, would help prevent what Friedrich Hayek described as “why the worst get on top.”

In his seminal book, “The Road to Serfdom,” Hayek described three reasons why: n “It is, as it were, the lowest common denominator which unites the largest number of people.

“If a numerous group is needed, strong enough to impose their views on the values of life on all the rest, it will never be

It could complement the outdoor venue being proposed now as well as Temple Beth Israel’s idea for developing a new education center facility.

Taxpayers would carry all of the burden for this community center through a bond issue. And bringing it to fruition, we’d bet, would take far less time than the grand town center vision.

But we’ll be patient and wish the commissioners and their fundraiser, the Longboat Key Foundation, the best. We’d love to be proven wrong: that governments make lousy real estate developers.

Don’t discriminate, but make it tougher to qualify to vote.

Amphitheater for St. Armands?

Circle’s Business Improvement District is interested in exploring options for increasing activity in a park in the middle of the commercial zone.

group of St. Armands property owners is interested in pursuing ambitious plans to reshape St. Armands Circle Park, the public open space in the center of the barrier island commercial district.

At a meeting last week, the St. Armands Business Improvement District considered a specific vision that board member Tom Leonard imagined: constructing an amphitheater on the southwestern end of the park.

Leonard came to the meeting with little more than an idea and a conceptual sketch depicting a midcentury modern-inspired covered stage structure, but he was optimistic the BID could team with other stakeholders to make the proposal a reality.

“I think an amphitheater would be a positive for the Circle, for residents, for the city of Sarasota,” Leonard said.

The amphitheater concept comes as the BID has spent months discussing options for creating more activity on St. Armands, including some specific emphasis on the prospect of enlivening St. Armands

Circle Park. The BID previously offered support for a private proposal to place a carousel in the park, an idea that has drawn some pushback from residents and the St. Armands Circle Association, a merchants group.

Diana Corrigan, the emeritus executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association, said a mound at the center of the open space would make it challenging to install a new feature while still holding events that have traditionally operated out of the park.

Corrigan suggested the park would have to be flattened and new drainage systems would have to be installed before the park could accommodate an amphitheater or carousel.

Despite that challenge, the BID remained interested in developing a more robust plan for making changes in St. Armands Circle Park. Although there were no cost estimates associated with the amphitheater project, Leonard expressed hope that St. Armands leaders could facilitate a project relying solely on private funds.

Call him Sgt. Puccio now Thomas Puccio, a police officer with the Longboat Key department since 2019, was promoted to sergeant this week in a special ceremony at the police station.

Puccio joined the department following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, where he served in law enforcement or security capacities in more than 30 nations.

He’s a native of Sarasota and was a deputy with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office after an initial stint in the Air Force.

In 2003, he was recalled from reserve to active duty and remained in the military from 2003 to 2019.

He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in criminal justice.

Utility poles begin to disappear The final – and arguably most noticeable – phase of the town’s underground utilities project is underway on the south end of the island.

The first few utility poles are coming down in Country Club Shores, beginning this week on Putting Green Lane.

Switchover to underground cables serving homes in the area has been taking place for the past month. As homes are connected to the underground grid, cables will come down and poles will be removed, generally from south to north.

The town’s $49.1 million overall plan to bury all utility lines is expected to be wrapped up in

There is a long history of artistic talent in Sarasota. Renowned painters and artists including Shirley Clement, Charles Ray McCurry and Hilton Leech honed their talents while exploring the many beauties of the area throughout the 20th century.

The Arts Advocates group has a long history, as well. The group formerly known as The Fine Arts Society of Sarasota has been in operation for 50 years, slowly accumulating a number of high-end, singular art from many of these Florida artists.

Its members are art enthusiasts and artists in their own right, and nothing makes past group President Donna Maytham happier than seeing a new, rare piece added to the collection. By its count, the group has acquired 51 mid-century pieces in its searches.

Those pieces have been on display at a gallery at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for some time, but Maytham and her fellow members have decided a change in scenery is in order.

For the first time since its inception in 1969, Arts Advocates now has a space of its own.

The organization has moved several of its arts pieces to its new gallery space highlighting mid-20th-century works at Crossings at Siesta Key. The opening art exhibit has a collection of 19 painted works of Sarasota landscapes, detailedfigure drawings, abstract works and mixed-media projects from

artists including Syd Solomon, Jerry Farsworth and Mary Sarg Murphy — all with their own connection and contributions to Sarasota. The gallery opened to the public July 17.

“This is the only collection of works like this available to the public,” said Maytham, who serves as the gallery’s director.

“All these paintings have a story to tell. … They’ve helped Sarasota become an epicenter of the arts.”

It’s been a busy two years of searching for a gallery location.

Although several spots were considered, Maytham said she and other members struggled

to find the right fit.

Serendipity struck earlier this year when Maytham learned of The Players Centre for the Performing Arts moving into Crossings at Siesta Key. Arts Advocates members checked out the mall space in early March and signed for the location in early June. The gallery space will be paid for by Arts Advocates membership funds.

“It hints at a repurposing at the mall,” Maytham said.

“Wouldn’t it be exciting if it became a center for nonprofits and art organizations?”

Maytham thinks the new, well-lit, wide-open space will

let visitors see the art in a literal new light. Arts Advocates received an unexpected-butappreciated bequest in 2018 that allowed staff to get its work appraised and then brought on professional curator Mark Ormond to organize a new collection for the Crossings space.

The gallery has a variety of paintings from over the years, from “Descending Yellows,” a watercolor piece by Hilton Leach that was the very first painting the arts group acquired, to a series of circusthemed paintings that line one of the space’s walls.

is John Corbino’s “Palette,” a painting with its own twisting journey. The art piece was stolen from the organization during the early 1990s and recovered by a collector at an estate sale in 2019.

The opening was a welcome continuation of in-person gatherings for the group following a pivot to online meetings during the pandemic.

Arts Advocates has started hosting tours led by docents the first Wednesday of each month for $10. It’s Maytham’s hope that the space will be used for donor events and fundraisers going forward.

New art pieces are being added to the collection, and Maytham said Ormond is always looking for future inclusions.

Now that the hard work of establishing the gallery and getting it open is done, she feels the future of what it can be is full of possibilities.

“People will have the opportunity to learn a lot,” Maytham said. “Will the community appreciate the art? Are they interested in the history of the art? … In that sense, we’re charting new territory.”

M

ost kids don’t get an internship until they’re in college, or maybe high school. But Lark Rippy is getting real-world experience right now, at age 12 — and she’s making her own money.

Rippy started her dog-walking business in November 2020, after she and her family moved to the north end of Longboat Key. Now she has a stable of loyal clients whose puppy proclivities she’s learning well.

“I just thought it would be fun to have a business, and I like animals, especially dogs,” Rippy said.

“I saw a need for a local dog walker and started by telling our dogs’ friends about it.”

Rippy rode her bike around the neighborhood, delivering letters to everyone with a dog.

After her marketing campaign, she now has a stable coterie of cli-

ents, including two dogs named Lucy. Rippy mostly walks smaller dogs to more easily keep control of them during her standard walk of 30 minutes.

“The dogs like when I bring them to the (Whitney Beach Plaza) center to say hi to people, and they get a Milk-Bone from the (Longbeach) Cafe,” Rippy said.

This isn’t Rippy’s first attempt at being a businesswoman. She once had a cooking blog called “All Kids Kitchen” but said it wasn’t earning enough to pay the website fees, so she shuttered it.

Now she runs a section in mom Heather Rippy’s store, Driftwood Beach Home and Garden, that is dedicated to dogs.

“I just started by helping Mom and watching her, then I got more independent,” Rippy said. “All my suppliers are small businesses, so it just feels really good to support them.”

There are gourmet treats, fashionable leashes and collars, and even cozy dog beds. Rippy is responsible for all of the inventory and pricing and earns 25% of what sells. She thinks in terms of a pet owner for what to stock and has plenty of training treats, leashes and toys.

“I don’t really help her, but I

review her orders when she orders inventory just to make sure it’s not too much and her items make sense for the shop,” Heather said.

“She’s very level-headed about it and knows how to have a good balance and doesn’t want to spend too much money but wants to keep it stocked.”

When she’s not working on her dog-walking, training or inventory-buying, Rippy is next door to her mom’s shop at the salon Design 2000 with fellow young Longboater Sidda Kim, helping Irina LaRose with social media and graphic design. Rippy tackles more of the latter.

Because Rippy and her sister, 9-year-old Bliss, are homeschooled, their mom brings her daughters’ creative minds into their academics. Rippy takes a lot of the initiative on her own, charging forward with her interests. Mom’s happy to let her do her thing.

“She pretty much always jumps in feet first and does it herself,” Heather said. “She gets a lot of ideas, and she is very persistent.”

Because Rippy loves dogs so much and has worked on train-

ing her family’s own two goldendoodles, Scout and Camper, she figured a dog-walking business would be a great new project to tackle. She’ll even work on training the dogs she walks, too. She’s training Scout and Camper to be therapy dogs and puts some of her work on patience and obedience to the test on her clients.

“I really like to have projects and work on things, and I just wanted to bring it all together,” Rippy said. “I just read a lot of books about training and practiced with our dogs.”

For all Rippy’s business, she’s noticed a summertime slowdown like other Longboat Key businesses. A lot of her clients have gone up north for the summer, so she’s taking a bit of a break.

She normally walks two dogs a day and takes the weekends off, but during the summer she’s also watching a neighbor’s koi fish until November and taking care of some backyard squirrels.

“I’m saving up money because when I grow up I want to have a homestead with sheep and goats and alpacas and chickens and stuff like that,” Rippy said.

wo priests and a few dozen of their parishioners walk onto a boat. This isn’t the setup for a joke, but the setup for the St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church’s sunset cruise July 14.

The church’s men’s club arranged the event, which brought parishioners to Marina Jack on Sarasota’s bayfront for a dinner cruise. Although there was a bit of rain, the sailors set foot onto the boat without a care in the world, ready to be whisked off for a two-hour cruise. Church members gathered beforehand to catch up on how their summers are going before hopping aboard.

Chuck Sobieck, the president of the men’s club, has put together a busy schedule for the church over the summer to keep parishioners together after a year apart. Next, the church will hit the water again for a chartered fishing trip in August or September.

SAKLC Director of Music Michael Bodnyk organized the movie night as a way to break in the new projection equipment and give members a way to get together. More people are still in town now than usual during summer, so Bodnyk wants to keep the social calendar active.

A few of the usual suspects were there, with choir scholar and yoga teacher Nina Vannucci and bell-ringer Sandi Love occupying two of the seats.

Love was excited to be there and said she’s wanted to see “Casablanca” for 30 years and never had the chance.

olorful, familiar and loud, blue jays are year-round residents in Florida. With their large blue crest on top of their heads and striking white, blue and black barred wings, jays are easy to identify by sight and by sound.

These loquacious songbirds communicate with other jays often, both vocally and with body language, using their crest.

Blue jays are members of the highly intelligent corvidae family (which also includes magpies and crows) and are known for their extensive repertoire of raptor imitations. They will regularly mimic ospreys, red-shouldered hawks, American kestrels and even bald eagles.

But why do blue jays imitate birds of prey? It has been suggested it’s to warn other birds that a predator is nearby or perhaps to trick other birds, with the goal of scaring them away for food. However, jays will also imitate songbirds, mechanical noises, human speech and meowing cats. It is therefore possible that jays simply enjoy adding as many sounds as possible into their own vocabulary — simply because they can.

Jays will cache — or hide — food, such as acorns, in tree cavities or bury them in the ground for later retrieval. By gathering food in an expanding pouch in their throat, as well as using their mouth and bill, they can transport up to five acorns at a time.

In a behavior known as caching, blue jays store food supplies in a safe place, for later use.

Jays are therefore vital seed dispersers for oaks and other nut-bearing trees, with food they fail to retrieve (because they have many caches and hide seeds singularly) potentially sprouting into plants or trees. Indeed, it is suggested that the rapid spread of oak trees in North America after the last Ice Age was thanks to the caching behavior of blue jays.

Built in 1989, it has three bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths and 3,115 square feet of living area.
