100% chance of love Ashleigh Tinney was blown away by Vinny Loccisano’s proposal — almost literally. The couple, which has ties to Longboat Key through Loccisano’s family, got engaged on the beach July 6. Loccisano brought out a barbershop quartet and proposed to Tinney on the beach. If July 6 sounds familiar, yes, that is the date that Hurricane Elsa was making its way past the Key with blustery wind and waves. Still, Loccisano got Tinney out to the beach under the pretense of taking pictures and popped the question. Despite a little breeze and a bit of rain, she said yes.

Rambunctious beachgoers often leave behind food trash and empty cans after a holiday, so the Longboat Key chapter of the Surfrider Foundation hosted a Liberty Litter cleanup to ease the shore’s soreness. Tahniya Smith, who helps organize beach cleanups for the foundation on Greer Island, set up the July 5 cleanup and found water bottles, beer cans and a few pizza boxes with her straightening-up squad. It’s usually one of the dirtiest days on the beach, she said. Luckily, their efforts attracted a few other beachgoers, who pitched in to pick up.

Nat Kaemmerer

Visitors from Kentucky, Amy Baker, Lysette Daniels and Marisa Baker, found some beach erosion from Hurricane Elsa’s waves.
