Getting up closer to midnight than sunrise just not your thing to see the magic of sea turtles?

As last Friday afternoon showed us, it’s not always the early-bird that catches a glimpse of a loggerhead turtle heading back to sea.

It’s fairly rare but not unheard of that a turtle comes ashore during daylight hours.

Still, though, remember it’s sea-turtle nesting season through October. Lights out along the beach at night, and stow those toys and lounge chairs. Also, although they’re good diggers, sea turtles can become trapped in beachfun holes dug into the sand.

Generally, leave the beach as you found it.

Chamber event delivers smiles

Town tries to hush rowdy boaters North-end residents have complained for months about raucous weekends.

Longboat Key leaders and residents spent hours on Monday discussing potential solutions to loud music from boats moored around Jewfish Key and northend beaches and sandbars.

“There’s not one magic bullet that’s going to address it all, and so I just want to lay that as the foundation,” Town Attorney Maggie Mooney said.

Commissioners asked Mooney to prepare a resolution and an emergency ordinance to consider at the July 2 meeting, the commission’s final meeting before summer recess.

The commission also plans to update the town’s noise ordinance, which commissioners last examined in 2016. Any changes wouldn’t happen until the fall, though.

Mayor Ken Schneier mentioned several options to solve some of the problems residents have complained about: ■ Giving direction to the town staff and management to enhance enforcement; ■ Working with Manatee County and state law enforcement; ■ Request the town manager and police to enhance enforcement in terms of police personnel and extended hours, including the possibility of working on the

water until past dusk; ■ Consider posting signs in areas boaters congregate; and ■ Work with county emergency dispatchers to help them better understand the locations and geography to help with faster responses to reported disturbances.

In 2016, the Florida Attorney General’s Office advised Longboat Key could not enforce its noise rules in the Intracoastal Waterway. However, Jewfish Key falls within Longboat Key’s municipal boundaries.

“There are maps, and FWC has them on their website, but those are not codified in state law,” Mooney said. “That’s what I’m saying here, and there’s no case law that interprets this.”

Mooney suggested seeking a new clarification from the state to avoid potential lawsuits. Commissioners, though, thought otherwise.

“I’m saying we don’t go back to the Attorney General and ask her to reconsider, and we make a decision on our own that this is a serious problem we need to address,” Schneier said.

Interim Police Chief George Turner said police use their two boats to patrol the waters from 10 a.m. to about 8 p.m. seven days a week, unless rough weather moves in.

Turner said the Longboat Key Police Department received 184 noise complaints from June 2020 to June 17, 2021. It includes 23 complaints about noise from the water.

“When we respond to a noise

complaint, if we get there, and there is noise, we have had 100% compliance with the people turning it down,” Turner said.

Vice Mayor Mike Haycock, who is a boater, said he felt that the 23 complaints didn’t match the public outcry. Commissioners have received emails about the issue for months.

“Something isn’t adding up, and I think maybe we’re concluding that it is,” Haycock said. “We just don’t have enough presence out there.”

Town Manager Tom Harmer said sometimes the source of the noise can be a passing vessel.

“You’re going to have boats that are just driving through. It’s kind of like a loud motorcycle going down (Gulf of Mexico Drive) or someone cranking their radio with their top down, going down GMD.” Manatee County Commissioner Kevin Van Osterbridge said his county has a $400,000 request in its upcoming budget to add a third boat for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Van Osterbridge also requested three additional marine deputies.

“We had our first reading of the budget, and it received no opposition,” Van Osterbridge said. “I hope that we can increase manpower, target enforcement, but also target it at the bad apples specifically.”

U.S. Coast Guard plans to replace navigation guides removed during beach work dredging.

oe Curley says he and his wife take their boat out on the water at least three times a week.

They were recently surprised upon noticing the removal of at least one navigational channel marker west of Longboat Pass Bridge.

“I have a boat that needs deeper water, so I was waiting for those markers to come back in to show the new route that’s there,” Curley said.

Curley said his boat’s draft is 4 feet, 2 inches. Although Curley doesn’t have forward-looking sonar like some newer boats to determine the water’s depth, his boat does have a radar, a chart plotter and a depth sounder that can record water depth immediately below the keel.

Radar can help a boat operator spot channel markers or buoys in poor visibility, and many of them are lighted for night visibility.

Without them, though, it’s a bit of a guessing game, even in the best of conditions.

“It’s just like putting yellow lines down the center of a highway, the yellow lines and the black and white lines,” Curley said.

“Why do you do that? To show the vehicles where it is.”

In an email, Longboat Key Town Manager Tom Harmer confirmed the U.S. Coast Guard plans to reinstall the markers once dredging finishes up and a new survey of the bottom conditions can be completed. Olsen Associates’ website shows the dredging on the northern end of the island is set to complete the week of Aug. 23.

The dredging is part of the town’s beach renourishment project.

The town and its contractors are not responsible for the removal of channel markers, according to Olsen Associates Vice President Al Browder.

The U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for marking federally maintained waterways, according to U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Officer Tony Sciullo, who works at the Coast Guard’s St. Petersburg station.

“If we are not confident in the waterway, we will evaluate it and shift or request permission to relocate aids to navigation in a waterway,” Sciullo said.

However, after dredging is completed, Sciullo said the contractor, Weeks Marine, is required to conduct bottom surveys using hydrographic equipment to plot any changes of depth. Then the contractor is required to submit the surveys to the Army Corps of Engineers, Sciullo said.

“The Corps of Engineers will take that data, validate it, and oftentimes the Corps themselves also send their own survey boats to validate that channel as well,” Sciullo said. “When we get that information back, we go down, … and we may decide to change those positions slightly if it’s better water for the mariner or to set them back on the correct channel dimensions.”

The U.S. Coast Guard distributes its Local Notices to Mariners on a weekly basis. At the end of January, the Coast Guard gave the following notice: “The Coast Guard has received a report of shoaling in Longboat Pass from Longboat Pass Buoy 2A (LLNR21759) and Longboat Pass Buoy 3 (LLNR21760) east toward the north end of Greer Island. Mariners are advised to use caution while transiting Longboat Pass as the shoal has shifted and has been reported less than 5 feet in some areas. All mariners exercise caution while transiting the area.”

Since the end of January, the Longboat Pass notice has continued to appear in the Coast Guard’s report weekly report.

“Where we’ve really made up time is on the south end, which is the placement of the sand

dredged from New Pass,” Harmer said. “We were able to take advantage of the contractor being available, Cottrell.

“And they originally had an assignment they were going to be leaving the area on that was paused, so we were able to redirect them (and) get clearance to the dredging almost a year earlier.”

Dredging from L’Ambiance to the Sanctuary is set to finish by the week of July 19.

Beach renourishment work is progressing along Longboat Key’s gulf front.

Longboat Pass buoys is missing.

It’s not the first time Longboat Key has experienced the removal of navigational markers, either.

In June 2017, the Coast Guard removed navigational markers in New Pass because conditions there became too shallow for larger boats to consistently pass through.

Curley said he thought it was important for the Longboat Pass markers to return.

“I would say that it’s critical for the Sarasota and Bradenton area to have markers there so that vessels can safely pass and come in and out of the intercostal

waterway because that’s a lot of revenue,” Curley said.

Sciullo said the Coast Guard depends on boaters for reports about the waterways.

“It’s a mariner-monitored system,” Sciullo said. “Anything that may not look right, the only way we know about it on a more frequent basis than our planned maintenance is by reports from mariners.”

Town budget includes roundabout design Longboat Key wants to move ahead with plans with hopes FDOT can add north-end project to its future construction list.

Money for engineering and design of a long-discussed north-end roundabout on Gulf of Mexico Drive is part of the $17.7 million town budget proposed for the next fiscal year.

The $300,000 line item for the traffic feature at Broadway Street is part of the spending and revenue plan town commissioners discussed Monday morning.

“It’s always been identified as a part of the Barrier Island Traffic Study that would help the island in a couple of ways,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said. “One of those is safety because you have the curve that’s coming in if you’re coming from Bradenton Beach.”

Following certification of town property values July 1, commissioners will set a not-to-exceed millage rate for the budget July 2 and then pick up the approval process in September after the elected officials’ summer break.

The preliminary overall budget represents a $475,669 (2.8%) increase in spending from the fis-

cal 2021 budget. Without raising the 2.1144 millage rate, expenses will exceed revenues by $576,149 and would be covered by fundbalance reserves, which would be reduced to 222 operating days, though final valuation figures from Manatee and Sarasota counties could change those figures.

Initial estimates from both county’s tax assessors’ offices indicate property values have risen a combined 5.37% after a slight drop in 2020. The town has been working with a projection of a 4% increase in property valuations.

The town plans to move ahead with design and engineering of the roundabout then lobby for the construction phase of the project be slotted into the Florida Department of Transportation’s five-year work plan as a readyto-build endeavor.

hood because of shorter-thantypical views north and south of gently curving Gulf of Mexico Drive from the stop sign at Broadway Street. The roundabout has also been billed as an aesthetically pleasing entrance to the town from the north.

Around 9,700 vehicles pass the Broadway Street and GMD intersection in both directions on a daily basis.

As early as 2014, state highway officials said such a trafficcalming feature on the north end could serve to aid not only drivers but also pedestrians crossing GMD in a spot not conducive to a crosswalk. A signalized crosswalk stands about 100 yards to the north.

“A roundabout would accomplish multiple things,” said L.K. Nandem, FDOT’s district secre-

tary who was then the district’s traffic engineer. “It would actually slow the entry speed into the town, and secondly, it would actually provide the slow moving around in the intersection that accommodates crossing.”

Also in 2014, consultants from Urban Land Institute recommended the town consider remaking the intersection to reduce crashes and congestion.

Since then, beachgoers parking on the west side of GMD have new reasons to cross the highway to reach Whitney’s Beachside, a restaurant at the corner designed and built with a proposed roundabout in mind for the future. Additionally, The Shore restaurant now attracts customers down Broadway, as does Mar Vista Dockside.

Long-term concepts for Gulf of Mexico Drive also include a

southern roundabout at Longboat Club Drive, but funding for that has not yet materialized.

“I think there’s a safety component that’s at a higher level concern with Broadway,” Harmer said.

Harmer mentioned how there is the possibility of future development near Longboat Club Drive and the Key Club.

“Maybe a Longboat Club Drive roundabout should be tied into the planning related to their projects, and so it was always considered like second in line,” he said.

The town plans to conduct a Gulf of Mexico Drive corridor study. Harmer said it could provide an opportunity to look at the possibility of adding a roundabout at Longboat Club Drive.

he Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County, a week after county commissioners approved a proposal to phase out funding for the organization, has named a new interim CEO. Lisa Krouse, who recently retired from an executive position at Lakewood Ranch-based FCCI Insurance Group, was named interim CEO of the EDC. She will start July 1, according to a statement, replacing interim CEO Dave Bullock.

Bullock, a former Longboat Key town manager, was named interim CEO in December 2019, replacing previous EDC leader Mark Huey, who had resigned.

“The EDC’s sole focus is to help grow and diversify the economy of Sarasota County,” Bullock said in a statement. “It’s been humbling to serve the past year and half, knowing almost 1,500 businesses were helped and thousands of local workers kept their jobs due in part to the work done at the EDC. I know the community is appreciative of these efforts.”

Krouse, formerly the executive vice president and chief administrative officer at FCCI, where she remains on the company’s board, had been the incoming chair of the EDC’s board. She instead resigned from the EDC Board, according to the statement, and moved into the interim CEO role, as she has been working closely with Bullock.

Krouse said she will convene an expanded transition team tasked with establishing the strategic plan for the EDC. “I appreciate the commitment the board has extended to this organization, and

I am looking forward to their help in facilitating a successful transition,” Krouse said.

“We’re fortunate that someone as capable as Lisa Krouse is willing to step up at this important moment for the EDC,” EDC Chair Charlie Murphy said in the statement. “We’ll need a steady hand for the changes moving forward, and she offers just that.”

Krouse’s appointment comes as the EDC faces a County Commission that essentially, by a 3-2 vote, made a move to defund the organization. Commissioner Mike Moran, who brought forth the proposal, has long criticized the effectiveness of the EDC. His proposal, voted on at a June 8 meeting, rolls back EDC funding beginning in fiscal year 2022 and phases out funding totally by the end of fiscal 2024. If the EDC shows proven growth and metrics over the next year, commissioners could restore funding.

The EDC was established as an independent agency in 2004 with the goal of sustaining and growing businesses in Sarasota County.

that’s using it,” Parsons said. “If you take a pontoon boat to a public place, and then anyone can arrange to rent it from you, then that’s conducting a commercial activity.”

Parsons said the town would issue additional citations for each day Toro is in violation of the Town Code.

A second violation costs $250, and each subsequent violation is $500.

“If you look at a map of the corporate limits, it’s not just the land area,” Parsons said. “It extends out into the water. … It does go around the east side of Jewfish Key. It goes up in the area between ourselves and Coquina (Beach) about halfway up the (Longboat Pass) Bridge.”

Toro will have the opportunity to contest the citation. If he chooses to do so, it would go before the town’s special magistrate.

un Life Entertainment Owner Edwin Toro insists he wants to make an honest living with his floating jungle gym.

Toro’s floating jungle gym is often anchored near Greer Island just east of the Longboat Pass bridge for private parties.

“It’s not any different than anybody who rents a Jet Ski or rents a pontoon boat or a kayak or a paddleboard, and they decide to bring it here and enjoy it,” Toro said. “I guess Longboat is trying to kick people out or something. I really don’t understand their motive.”

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons said the town issued Toro a $100 citation for conducting business within the corporate limits of Longboat Key without the proper documentation.

“The understanding that we have is that the business when it’s operating within the town is open to anyone to be able to arrange for private parties,” Parsons said.

“And if I can arrange for a private party, you can arrange for a private party, anyone else can arrange for a private part, that’s still a commercial activity.”

Parsons said anyone conducting commercial activity in a public place within the town has to have a concessionaire agreement or a special event permit.

Florida: A cradle of liberty!

Gannett Co.’s editors besmirched Florida and its 22.6 million people as ‘a cradle’ of hate, delusion and extremism — ignoring the hate, death and destruction wrought by the ‘peaceful’ protesters.

I

t’s a long-standing approach in modern newspapering to delve into the lives and sordid details of criminals and miscreants. Just the kind of story the sanctimonious editors at Gannett Co. relish: Who are the 472 people (so far) who have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol? What do they have in common, and what conclusions can be made about them?

Lo and behold, as reported in Gannett’s Florida papers over the weekend, 47 of the people arrested, 10% of the total, are considered Floridians, tying Florida with Texas for having the highest number of people arrested in the Jan. 6 riot.

This, the Gannett editors conclude, makes Florida an epicenter of extremism and hate, the “cradle of hate and delusion.”

What a ridiculous claim.

Forty-seven people from all over the state, out of 22.6 million Floridians — 0.0002% of the population, two-10,000ths of a percent — make Florida a bad, ugly state teeming with hatefilled extremists.

How can this be? What about Florida makes the state such a magnet for this ilk?

In a sense, the “delusional” label that Gannett’s editors paste on our state is laughable.

For one, where is the proof — the documentation, evidence and interviews — that confirm all 47 of the Floridians are hatefilled, delusional extremists?

Yes, 12 of the 47, according to Gannett, have ties to Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and QAnon, acknowledged right-wing organizations. But even then, those 12 make up only five-100,000ths of a percent of Florida’s population. How do they make Florida “a cradle of hate and delusion”?

What’s more, if you just think of the probabilities, it should not be a surprise that more Floridians and Texans were involved in the riot than from other states.

Texas and Florida are the second and third most populous states. Voters in those states cast more votes for Donald Trump than in any other states — 5.89 million Texans and 5.66 Floridians. Why should it be alarming that more Texans and Floridians

attended the Jan. 6 Trump rally than from other states and participated in the Capitol riot?

The Gannett editors made a point of noting that twice as many Floridians were arrested than were Californians, even though California has 17 million more people than Florida.

But everyone also knows California is one of the most progressive states in the country. Out of a population of 39.6 million, 6.6 million Californians voted for Trump, 34% of the total vote. So why would anyone expect more Californians to be on the other side of the country on Jan. 6 storming the Capitol?

If there is a surprise in the number of alleged extremists among the 472 arrested, it should be that New York had the fourth highest number of those arrested. One of the bluest of the blue states had 30 people arrested. Where are the Gannett editors’ concerns and outrage?

It’s pretty gumptious for these self-appointed judges to label Florida as they did with such a weak, flimsy, concocted, tilted storyline. “That’s a blot on the Sunshine State’s psyche that will take a long time to fade,” huffed the Gannett-owned Daytona News-Journal editorialist.

The News-Journal went on to demand “that the state’s chosen leaders take action to root out the hate and condemn the violent bigotry these groups espouse.”

No one should espouse violence. But“root out the hate” — what does that mean? Jail and shoot people for how they think, the way it’s done in the communist, socialist and authoritarian regimes?

Of course, nowhere in this “investigation” are there mentions of the violence, hate, death and destruction that the antifa and BLM members perpetrated across America in their peaceful protests. It is unadulterated “hate and delusion” when they destroy and loot property, police stations and federal offices.

Perhaps Gannett’s progressive editors and reporters should look in the mirror. From 2016 to now, these so-called tellers of truth made no pretenses about showing their own unabashed

CANDIDATE IN SEARCH OF A MESSAGE Here we go again. Another election cycle of Florida’s forever politician, Charlie Crist, wanting another better, higher wrung in the political world.

The guy is such a career politician, which is another way of saying he is such a political hack. Nice guy. But a guy who has lived almost Crist’s famous his entire hug with Barack adult life Obama. on a government paycheck — thanks to Florida voters who fall for his shtick.

Having lived since 2016 as a nobody of note in Congress, the former governor of Florida must be craving attention and wants to come back to the limelight of being the state’s chief executive. He’s running for governor again.

“I’m fighting for Florida,” Crist says — his forever campaign line. You’ll hear that over and over. In the opening paragraph of “Meet Charlie” on his campaign website, Crist tells us he has been “fighting my entire life for Floridians.”

Spare us.

For rational people, it’s puzzling to try to understand why Crist thinks he has a chance.

He’s an old horse. Who wants to go back and ride an old horse? People want a new horse, perhaps an up-andcomer in Florida’s Democratic Party like Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried, who is 43. Crist will turn 65 on July 24.

And let’s just pretend Crist makes it through the Democratic primary to run against Gov. Ron DeSantis in the

contempt for Donald Trump and those who supported him.

Florida is not the cradle of

general election. A lot can happen between now and November 2022, but at this point it’s hardly plausible to imagine Crist having any kind of convincing message or a record that shows he is more competent than DeSantis. It just isn’t so.

Dig deep in your memory.

What did Crist do for Floridians as governor that is memorable? Beep; time’s up.

You can bet if the race became Crist versus DeSantis, the Republicans would harp on the one thing Crist did that was memorable. When the country was falling into the depths of the 2008 recession, and Florida right along with it, then-Republican Gov. Charlie Crist literally hugged Democrat President Barack Obama at a Fort Myers rally and embraced Obama’s $800 billion stimulus package — the stimulus bill that only stimulated more federal debt.

Crist will never live that down, especially in a state as red as Florida is now. Nor does he have much to go on from his time in Congress. The Washington watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste gives Crist a “0” on a scale of 0-100 for his voting.

It calls him “hostile” to taxpayers. The Club for Growth gives same thing, “0%.”

With little record of policy achievement to tout, you can tell Crist is in search of a winning issue or platform. Last week, he glommed onto the Gannett newspapers’ reports about Floridians who were involved in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. He called for DeSantis to create a bipartisan commission to investigate “what to do to keep our state and our democracy safe from these violent extremists.”

It’s time to go to pasture.

All of this talk about diversity and inclusiveness these days actually is divisive.

Instead of uniting everyone as proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence (“all men are created equal”), the Pledge of Allegiance (“one nation under God with liberty and justice for all”) and by Martin Luther King Jr. (judge by the content of character), when special-interest groups

hold themselves apart or demand special treatment, they engender resentment and create division.

How about a month of the six colors for Black Lives Matter during Black History Month?

Terry Hynes was dean of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism? Did she ever work as a reporter? Ha! I can’t stand it.

I graduated from the UF School of Journalism in 1969 and have forever referred to it as the “Joe Friday School of Journalism.” Joe Friday from the show “Dragnet” because his signature line was “Just the facts.”

Not anymore. Back then, if a whiff of opinion entered your story, it was an automatic F. Tough school. Great school.

They taught us that to develop a “questioning attitude” was the most important thing. Now facts are passe; truth is whatever you feel it is from day to day.

I faced resistance to being a woman in job interviews after graduation but always countered it by asking, “What does my sexual equipment have to do with my performance?” I said just fire me if I don’t work out.

And when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uttered the words “content of their character, not the color of their skin,” the “ring of truth” had sounded and a nation changed.

But now racism is back with all its former ugliness. They just flipped the script. White is bad, and color is good.

I believe it is child abuse to teach children that their color is the only thing that matters.

I read their mothers’ anguish when their boys come home crying from being told they are bad.

Critical race theory is a fraud; its purpose is to reinforce the planned movement of America into a Marxist country.

But no one can ever expunge the words Thomas Jefferson wrote at the beginning of America: “We believe these words to be self-evident … that all men are created equal.”

CRT is nothing more than propaganda Your editorial “A Response to a Response” does a great job tearing to pieces and ripping to shreds the letter in question from Terry Hynes, who attempted to intellectualize the justification for what is nothing more than racist propaganda cloaked in a scientific-sounding name called critical race theory.

There is nothing “critical” or “theoretical” expressed in the letter. CRT is presented as a forgone conclusion of systemic racism.

The power possessed by school officials and teachers is overwhelming and is difficult for students to overcome.

Some well-known Black men — Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Robert Woodson, Jason Riley, to name a few — have repudiated the racial bias expressed in CRT. They are vehemently opposed to blaming white people for the problems plaguing Black people because that infers that Black people are incapable of solving their own problems.

Blame destruction of the nuclear family and fatherless homes.

CRT can easily be summed up: how I learned to love hating myself.

NOT COOL AT THE POOL 1:50 a.m., 5600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen dispute: A police officer intervened in a dispute between two residents of a building over late-night use of the community swimming pool. A caller to police complained a group was loud and used profanity while they were using the pool after established hours. Both parties were advised to stay away from each other and to bring the issue of late-night pool use to the attention of the residents association.

NOT COOL AT THE BEACH 1:47 p.m., 2800 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen dispute: A caller who wished to remain anonymous reported a couple on the beach possibly drinking alcohol and maybe smoking marijuana.

Police reported no evidence of wrongdoing on the couple’s part. Then one of the couple yelled profanities at the caller over the unproven accusations.

The couple decided to leave the beach on their own.

fire-rescue personnel checked on the welfare of a man who potentially was experiencing a medical problem. The person said he had simply fallen asleep.

No criminal history for the man was found.

JUNE 18

MOUSE, NOT A MAN 1:06 a.m., 600 block of Dream Island Road Suspicious incident: Police responded to a home on an initial report of an intruder inside the occupied dwelling. Once an officer arrived, he learned the intruder was a mouse. The officer looked around and saw no mouse but recommended the resident keep the lights on and contact an exterminator.

HOMEWARD BOUND 6:05 p.m., 200 block of Sands Point Road Suspicious person: A caller was concerned about the safety of a man he found in a parking lot who appeared disoriented.

Police learned the man had been driving to a vacation rental after dinner on the mainland and became separated from the car he was following. Police called a family member who came to lead the man to the right place.

LAND SHARK 7:46 p.m., 1200 block

of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen assist: A caller reported an angler cleaning and gutting a 70-inch black tip shark on the beach. The angler said it was not the original intent of butchering the catch, but she was concerned about its well-being after a lengthy fight to land it. A check with wildlife officials confirmed there was nothing illegal about doing so.

SLEEPY TIME 11:34 a.m., Linley Street boat ramp Suspicious person: Police and

Officers who interviewed the couple separately learned the couple was from out of town and was heading to the beach. They stopped so that the passenger could change shoes.

No signs of an altercation were evident, and each denied there had been trouble.

PLAYING BALL 7:12 p.m., 3600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Suspicious person: A resident sought police help in learning more about a large group of people who arrived at the beach and began setting up volleyball nets and using resort-owned

chairs. A man with the group said he was staying at the address and had guests. The caller was told the group had a right to use the resort facilities.

POOL PIPE PROBLEMS 11:06 a.m., 600 block of Hibiscus Way Citizen dispute: A pool construction project prompted a call to police from a homeowner who complained about a drainage pipe directing water on the caller’s property. When an officer arrived, he found the pipe directing water the other way, the officer said it was a civil matter. The homeowner said the pool company had perhaps redirected the drain water after a call was placed to them.

NO CHAINS ALLOWED 12:47 p.m., 1500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen assist: A property owner called police to report a pair of bicycles chained and locked on private property by a pair of riders who then walked north on the beach. An officer spoke to them, and they removed their bikes.

A celebration of life will be on Wednesday June 30th at the Bloomington Country Club at 4 p.m. Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

Al was born January 1, 1929, in Danville, the son of Alden Farnsworth and Helen Johnson Barker. He married Arlene Owens Hastings, daughter of Frank and Elma Owens on January 17, 1963, in Bloomington.

She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Nancy L. Barker of Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, one step-daughter Linda Murase of Tokyo, Japan, and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William (Mary Jo) Barker.

Al graduated from Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, Minnesota in 1946.

He attended the University of Illinois and then graduated from the University of Arizona in 1952 with a BS in Business Administration, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In the 1950s, Al was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant while flying interceptors out of Tyndall Air Force Base in Tyndall, FL. In 1950, Al became manager of Barker Motor Co. which had moved from Danville

He was a great storyteller who used humor to engage and relate to others. to Bloomington. It was located at 310 N. Lee St. Barker Car Rental was added in 1963. In 1972 with his brother Bill, a new facility for Barker Motor Company was built on Ireland Grove Road. The showroom building was completely separate from the service department making it a new concept at that time.

Cadillac was acquired in 1979 and GMC Trucks in 1994. The Barker Olds/ Cadillac GMC franchise was sold in 1999 to two longtime employees, Dan Traeger and Tim Johnson. The Honda dealership was acquired in 1975, and his nephew Brad became manager in 1982. Its first location was at the corner of Oakland and Veterans Parkway. In 1987, a new Honda facility was built on GE Road.

Joseph Holt has always loved being at the center of music events.

The arts and concerts figure in Sarasota had his first brush with being a program director nearly 20 years ago when he was considered for a job as program director of musical performances at the National Gallery of Art. It didn’t end up happening, but it made Holt realize exactly what he wanted to do with his career: be a deciding voice in choosing a series of music performances.

He’s been able to do just that at Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota for the past six seasons, where the director of artist programs has assembled extensive seasons of classical music from up-and-coming artists.

Holt recently announced his decision to step down from the position, though he will still perform with the group as a pianist. His last day is June 30.

Preparation for a season starts around two years in advance, giving Holt and the organization plenty of time to line up the performances and shows.

It starts as a list of talent that couldn’t possibly fit into one season but then gets whittled into something usable. Part of his time with the organization has been scheduling more concise seasons.

He said that before he was on board, a concert season would have almost 50 performances, but each has since been brought down to around 25.

The pandemic, of course, threw a wrench in Holt’s careful plans. The program director needed to find new outdoor venues for the various performances during the season.

Events that once took place at the Historic Asolo Theater and the Sarasota Opera House were

moved to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Historic Spanish Point and Nathan Benderson Park for much of last season.

“It threw us into a tailspin,” Holt said. “Culture didn’t just die, and we needed to keep presenting our artists with performance opportunities but for our audiences as well. It’s a crazy thing to design something and then have to throw it away and redesign it again.”

Holt and his staff still managed to see it through, and the upcoming 2021-2022 season will return to indoor venues.

Guests and performers will fill the halls of the Sarasota Opera House, Bird Key Yacht Club, Temple Sinai and more. Outdoor performances for the winter season are being considered as well.

Making it through the pandemic gave Holt a different perspective on his career as well.

He and his spouse, Paco Martinez-Alvarez, always felt when they hit their 60s that it would be time to transition to sometime else but weren’t entirely sure when that would be.

The pandemic helped Holt, now 61, reach the conclusion it was finally time to wind down.

“Observing the business from this perspective, I was concerned there are opportunities that younger people need to have, and I don’t want to hold onto something unnecessarily,” he said. “This feels like the right time for someone else to take over.”

Artist Series Concerts will throw an open house reception for Holt on June 30 at 1226 N. Tamiami Trail.

He said his replacement has been found and will be announced in the near future.

In any case, he said he’s just excited to take more time with family, go on long trips with his partner and return for the upcoming season to play piano for audiences.

“We sometimes define our lives by what we’ve done and accomplished,” Holt said. “But every time I’ve reached a point, it’s been an accomplishment, like now. I realize I’ve only scaled one mountain, and there’s higher mountains out there.”

Holt feels better leaving at the top. The departing director said helping get his beloved organization through a pandemic and onto a new season feels like an appropriate final act.

“Being able to bring us through this pandemic with (Executive Director) Marcy Miller was a turning point,” Holt said. “I wanted to leave the organization in a good stance with an (upcoming) season that’s set up.”

Holt’s role as programs director has been to organize the group’s seasons, picking a variety of performers to fit the mission statement of promoting young artists who have participated in competitions and conservatories but are still early in their careers. He also makes sure to pick a variety of performers from pianists to violinists and keep each season fresh.

There’s also the important novelty factor: This upcoming season will feature a classical accordion player.

ongboat Key has ties to a top-of-his-class boxer. He’s a great athlete, works well on a schedule, is good with the other kids in his training facility and loves to jump.

And actually, he’s a working dog named Maximus Commander in Chief (“Chief” for short) who just won his breed category at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on June 13. Longboat Key residents Ann and Steve Anderson are his owners, a couple who have long been in the business of dog shows. Chief is the latest in a line of seven generations of Rummer Run boxers they’ve bred since the 1970s.

“Steve and I were married in Minneapolis and both working,

and a dog show came to town,” Ann Anderson said. “Neither of us had ever been to a dog show. But Steve took one look in the boxer ring, and he said, ‘Oh, that’s the breed I like.’ There are a lot of men who really like boxers. We got our first one before we had children.

And the first were just as pets.”

The Andersons soon found themselves in the dizzying world of dog shows, a competitive and political arena with gossip and enemies. Finding a female to start their breeding was difficult because no one wanted to sell a good female. That’s how you a strong bloodline is built, Anderson said, by having a strong female. They started showing dogs seriously in Texas, where Chief’s bloodline began.

“The thing about a pedigree is that it’s not for snob appearances. It’s for predictability,” Anderson said. “A lot of purebred dogs have health issues because they have been bred close together.

You didn’t mean to, but you lock

in some health issues, right? So one of the things that started out was our dogs would die young and have cardiac problems. Once we realized that, we wouldn’t breed anybody that we knew had it to try to get rid of that, which we really have pretty successfully.”

The Andersons have had dozens of dogs throughout the years, with all the heartbreak and joy that comes with it. The better way to quantify how many dogs they’ve had, Anderson said, is to say that they’ve had 80 champions. To become a champion, a dog must win a certain number of points, including two major wins from two different judges.

They’re working on making Chief a champion, and his breed win at Westminster helps.

“Each year, a new year starts as far as computing points,” Anderson said. “However many dogs you defeat at each dog show, that SEE PAGE 16

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE With his Westminster win, Chief is the top boxer in the country and the second-best working group dog in the country.

There are seven groups: working, herding, toy, hound, sporting, nonsporting and terrier. For context, the Pekingese Wasabi who won Best in Show is part of the toy group.

To win Best in Show, a dog has to win its breed, group and among the group winners. That means the dog goes through three separate

judges to come out on top. Of course, sometimes judges’ decrees are a bit subjective, but there are guidelines for each breed. Chief, Ann Anderson said, is supposed to be muscular, have a wide neck and muzzle, have a low back and have dark, wellshaped eyes.

“My object is always to get a dog that’s so good that somebody that doesn’t know anything about the dog knows that’s a really good dog,” Anderson said.

goes into the score. You start them as a puppy, and then they’re in open class. They work their way up to class. … So that’s what we’re doing with this dog. He’s being campaigned. That’s why he goes to so many shows, because we want him to get as many points as possible.”

Chief is actually the first dog the Andersons have had who doesn’t live with them. He lives in Alabama with the Andersons’ trainer and handler Rick Justice, who takes care of all the dogs and puppies along with his wife, Mandy. They travel with the dogs to dozens of shows — Steve Anderson estimates their dogs go to 75-100 shows every year.

“In Florida, it’s centered around Brooksville (where the Florida Gulf Coast Cluster Dog Show is) in January,” Ann Anderson said. “There are shows all over the country that weekend, but of course, it’s much handier to stay closer to home.”

Because the dogs travel so much, they have to go through

a lot of training, including crate training, before they hit the road.

“They have to be trained to stand still for long periods of time,” Steve said. “They have to work on a lead, and they have to be used to being handled by everybody.”

Steve handled them before Justice came into the picture, but the amount of training was hard to keep up with while raising kids and having a career.

“I was at a big disadvantage because all the professional handlers beat me up all the time,” Steve said. “That’s really hard.

They make it look easy, but it’s a lot harder than it looks.”

With all the ups and downs, the Andersons have loved their experiences in the dog show world.

“The great thing about dog shows is, even if you lose, you still get to take your dog home,” Ann Anderson said. “Most people think their dog is the best, the nicest and sweetest. It’s just such a rewarding hobby. Steve always traveled a lot, and I was always so happy to have my dogs keep me company and keep me safe.”

unch at your desk or at the Lido Beach Resort? On June 16, the answer was obvious for members of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce as they met for a Networking at Noon event.

The chamber hadn’t met in person for networking since a Business After Hours event in April, and the excitement from members who got to see one another’s faces was palpable.

Before lunch, members mingled on the eighth floor of the Lido Beach Resort, admiring the view and comparing notes on how business had been recently. Chamber President Gail Loefgren was seeking sponsor sign-ups for the Longboat Key Freedom Fest, as well.

Several members stopped to drop off gifts to raffle during the afternoon.

After lunch, Andrew Vac led the presentation, and then members headed back to their various workdays.

The chamber will meet again June 29 for a Business After Hours event, marking a return to a more normal schedule of events.

ith their big yellow feet; their purple, blue and green bodies; a pale blue shield on their forehead; and a bill that is red at the base and yellow at the tip, purple gallinules are one of the most colorful birds in North America. Closely related to the common gallinule, they too are loquacious birds that feed, roost and nest in marshes.

Purple gallinules are monogamous and form long-lasting bonds. Couples jointly build nests in dense marsh vegetation. To help protect their nests from terrestrial predators, they build them above deep water. As another safeguard, they often build extra “sham” nests to confuse predators.

Gallinule couples take turns incubating their eggs. They are known for their “change of guard” ritual when swapping places on the nest: The returning bird will offer up a piece of grass or a leaf.

The incubating bird indicates it is ready to leave the nest by accepting the offering and adding it to the nest. The partner then takes over incubation duties.

Gallinule chicks are “subprecocial,” meaning they can walk soon after hatching but cannot feed themselves for the first few weeks of life. Immature purple gallinules from earlier nestings and juveniles will help parents feed the younger siblings. Such cooperative breeding, in which individuals others
