YOUR TOWN MICHAEL'S ON EAST SNAPS UP KEY MEMORY
Longboat Key Snapper is on Michael’s On East’s Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week menu and will soon become a regular offering. Klauber created Longboat Key Snapper in 1982, when he was food and beverage director at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort after guests requested a fancier version of the fish. The dish reflects Klauber’s love for sundried tomatoes and its perfect complement with crabmeat. “It was quite a challenge with the chef at the time, who had his own opinion, and I convinced him to try this new dish and to try it as a special.”

A TALL TALE
Some residents question the fairness of a twopronged approach to burying power lines.

Jack Peffley is known for wearing the pants on St. Armands Circle — whether the pattern is polka dot, psychedelic green or ’70s-era flowers. But one thing that hasn’t changed in his 35 years in the area or the more than 20 years in which he’s sported the pants: Despite his 6-foot-8 status, Peffley has never grown too big for his britches. On May 30, the face of St. Armands, who was most recently general manager of Marcello Sport, said goodbye to the Circle and hello to retirement in Myrtle Beach, S.C. File photo

Will the funding setup for underground utilities projects bury the latest proposal? Concern about the setup grows deeper even after the Longboat Key Town Commission passed a Gulf of Mexico Drive undergrounding referendum question on first reading Monday at a special meeting. “I believe strongly the present proposal is doomed for failure,” said Islander Club resident and former Vice Mayor David Brenner. “Ballot one is good for me, but ballot two is another story.” Brenner said the real benefit to the entire town comes from all utilities being buried islandwide. “Should I care what the other neighborhoods decide?” Brenner said. “Yes. The real benefit to me is having a single community (with buried utilities).” SEE UTILITIES PAGE 2A
