While some Americans are returning to large-scale events, either masked or unmasked, a large group of people is hesitant to fully live life like they did in prepandemic times just yet.

What is ‘I do?’

Sarah Bauer and Greer Mackebee might have started as fierce rivals on the 2012 Jeopardy! College Tournament, but now they’ll go forward in life as unstoppable trivia partners. And their married days began in Longboat Key. Mackebee recently proposed to Bauer in front of the Beachcomber. Neither lives on the Key, but Bauer has been coming here since she was a kid. Mackebee’s first trip was when he proposed, but he said it is now special for both of them. Mackebee represented Duke University and Bauer represented Indiana University on the 2012 game. They each reached the quarterfinals. They are both lawyers in Washington, D.C.

Least, but not last

Longboat Key has three fledged least tern chicks with the potential for a few more before summer ends. Sarasota Audubon Society Shorebird Coordinator Kylie Wilson noticed June 10 that the still-growing shorebirds have just about reached maturity and can fly. Some of the adults have re-nested, which means that in about three weeks, there could be more baby birds. This is good news after the colony lost three-quarters of its chicks this month because of predatory night herons.
